Journalist Katie Herzog says one article lost me all my friends. She is a culture writer and journalist known for appearing on Bill Maher Overtime and for her podcast Blocked and Reported, which she hosts with Jesse Singal. She lost her friends from woke culture and trans ideology after writing an article for The Stranger on gender dysphoria, woke culture and cancel culture explained. We chat about everything from transgender sports and Judith Butler to Ben Shapiro and Jordan Peterson. Other mentions include Graham Linehan, Lia Thomas (swimmer) and detransitioning.
Watch this after her appearance on Real Time With Bill Maher (Overtime).

I think you weren't critical enough of her opinion. She kept saying her feelings about an implied sudden influx of trans people. You gave some counterpoints and she kept saying: "i understand that but i feel...' and you just let her carry on. I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt and maybe it was an overreaction to try and 'cancel' her , not knowing this story before I was genuinely intrigued to hear her story and leave this video thinking "maybe the otherside got it wrong'. But as soon as she hot to her main crux of a 'worry' over a perceived increase in trans people you should of educated her and reframed the discussion. Because that specific view is transphobic and a myth peddled by transphobic people. To clarify i believe there is some nuance here where Katie is not a full-on bigot as some people are trying to colour her. I think its wrong the otherside are being so violent towards her. Although she does have some misguided thoughts and feelings. Because even if she was right there's nothing wrong with that , people dont make these choices lightly. As referenced the "80% detransistioning" is a lie and a scientific study which has been officially rebuked and discredited. There is nothing wrong with her interviewing detransistioned people and listing their experiences as long as its made clear these people are q tiny tiny minority of an already marginalised group. There was way too much discorse to let sone ill-informed rhetoric to surface

@@gregoryrobinson324 Hi Gregory, I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. My channel and style are very different to that of Prof Dave (of whom I'm a huge admirer) - although we definitely share fundamental values of truth, science and anti-magical thinking. It's not my role as a journalist (not a professor like Dave!) to educate people. I bring my listeners intriguing views...as you noticed, I try to push back a little. And I trust my viewers - who tend to be centrist moderates - to make up their own minds. You could say that I have a moral duty to push back harder. I respect that position, and I respect journalists who hold it. But it's not one I hold. That's partly a personal choice, and it's partly an acknowledgement of my limitations/strengths as a host. My personal motto for the channel is 'curiosity over judgement'. Those who love this podcast (and it is successful in audio form - I'm fortunate enough to make a living from it now) often point to my lack of interference and moralising as its strength. But I accept your criticism. If you prefer more of an educator or moral arbiter, this channel might not be for you. I hope, however, that you do warm to it. Thanks, Andrew

I'm arriving here with an increasing feeling of unease after reading about Dr. Ken Zucker in Canada, and the work of Kara Dansky (both of whom have also been labeled TERF/transphobic and denounced). I don't yet feel like I can say how much I concur or disagree with the specifics of their positions (or Katie's), but I can say this with certainty: I find the militancy of trans activism in trying to silence any dissenting opinion, no matter how reasonably stated, hugely problematic. The attempt to disallow even asking certain questions is entirely akin to the censorship we've endured forever from the religious right. And it's just as concerning. To paraphrase Nietzsche on this: "we become the monsters we fight".

Katie is an intelligent thoughtful and earnest person. I very much appreciated this exchange of ideas and expression of personal thoughtful experience between you both. I have been very concerned as a citizen of the widely swinging cultural / political pendulum that is currently seeming more and more like a dangling sword. I see so many young people lost and loud about gender. I feel for them and wish we could talk about the mental health crisis in American Youth - - and admit that issues of sexual identity and a preference have moved 20 paces too far off the board and we are not understanding the serious implications to the overall future health of these individuals. There are more things to fight about now and more words to describe experience but there is no forward healthy development. I know this is also technically anecdotal but I've had this exact same experience. I've been a lesbian since the mid 90s as a teenager & have lived in the gayest city in the country for over 20 years. I watched 90+% of butch lesbians transition over the course of a few years- probably in the hundreds. There is no way this isn't a social contagion. I watched it happen in real time.

Great interview. I was on of those listeners who got mad at her podcast a while back, though I didn't stop listening. They did an interview with one of their producers who had pulled a scam on "Libs of TikTok" and fooled it into posting a false story. I was outraged because I think of "Blocked and Reported" as a show that celebrates seeking truth based on reality and navigating the tides of ideology, and pulling a scam on anyone, regardless of merit, is an ugly thing to do. We don't need more lies in the public sphere. So there was quite a backlash and in the next program they explained that it wasn't THEIR scam, it was a side project of one of their producers, but they clearly didn't do enough to distant themselves from what this producer had done. It was also clear that they believed that some of the criticism was motivated by ideology, which is a bit insulting. But it was just a blip. It's still a great show.

As it relates to your discussion about Caitlyn Jenner's athletics past.....Caitlyn Jenner, formerly known as Bruce Jenner, was a hugely publicized Athlete in the US in the late 70's. He remained a public personality, Olympic commentator etc...well into the 80's. He won the Gold Medal and set a record in the Decathlon at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. As a gay man, I've always had a strong sense of my gender. I was questioning my sexuality before I was a teenager, but I've never questioned my gender. I've always felt exactly right being male, so yeah it makes sense to me that gender identity is a real thing. I've always assumed that trans people felt inside about their assumed/assigned gender they way I did about my assumed/assigned identity. This is one way I disagree, there are a few others, but it's refreshing to hear different viewpoints than I hear in my queer Seattle bubble and I appreciate the conversation.

I believe the 80% Andrew mentioned early in this interview comes from the following (taken from Katie’s detrans article): James Cantor summarized those studies' findings in a blog post: "Despite the differences in country, culture, decade, and follow-up length and method, all the studies have come to a remarkably similar conclusion: Only very few trans-kids still want to transition by the time they are adults. Instead, they generally turn out to be regular gay or lesbian folks." The exact rate of desistance varied by study, but overall, they concluded that about 80 percent of trans kids eventually identified as their sex at birth.

6:45 : The 80%* figure is commonly cited as the average rate of *desistance* based on research from the 80s, 90s, early 2000s. Desistance is gender dysphoria going away or being resolved without transition, as opposed to detransition where someone (who may or may not have gender dysphoria) transitions and then goes back. People like Katie Herzog and Stella O'Malley would be people who desisted, they had gender dysphoria in childhood and then it resolved during puberty in both cases (which follows desistance research of gendend dysphoric youth who desisted by puberty). The desistance literature generally follows gender dysphoric youth who are super gender non conforming in childhood and like other gender non-conforming children without gender dysphoria go on to be same-sex attracted. This is a different population than people (be they agp males or newer cohorts of females) who develop gender dysphoria in teen years or later and are much less likely to be homosexual. * The 80% figure is an average of studies finding 60-90% of children with gender dysphoria desisting by adulthood. These studies were carried out prior to the newer discourses around gender identity and increased visibility of rans identity, as well as before the advent of practices like social transition for young kids and medical transition for adolescents. These studies also ranged in terms of the context in which the kids were followed. Most studies were focused on young people with long term, classic gender dysphoria who were not getting any therapy or other interventions, they were just leaving the kids be and checking in 10 years later to see if they still met criteria for gender dysphoria and/or had any desire to transition, while some studies were tracking children who were clients getting exploratory talk therapy (as opposed to the affirmative approach that now domimates and is seen as the only thing acceptable with anything else being labelled a form of "conversion therapy") at a gender clinic , but not any medical interventions).

Isn't that just the point? isn't that exactly what it is about? That you can like someone, even a whole lot BUT STILL DISAGREE with them on some major issues? I am not sure if i lost you there towards the end a little bit or if it was the language barrier once again, but those last few minutes were a bit odd for me. I can't stand Shapiro personally, but if he says something that's right, i will not agree with it any less, just because he annoys me with lot's of his personal hard line stances. I really like James Lindsey on the other hand. He is damn smart as far as i can tell and i also like his humor and personality, but i could still disagree with him on other things.... so before i repeat myself....hope that wasn't too far off and my 2 cents to Katie's experience: JUST AWFUL. People in these circles are so damn closed minded and entitled .....i am sort of having the same experience with coreowner....i saw on fb how my musicians friends and colleagues were talking about people like me and so i retreated from there and i do not hear a single word from any of them, people i've worked with for the past 2 decades and i guess now i am a nazi, well, it must be so then if it says so on the one daily newspaper here in Austria they all read and they regurgitate it over and over on their socials.... this cut is way, way deeper than we think or are willing/hoping to admit. way deeper.

Initially I made the assumption that Katie was a detransitioner, based on how she looked, it's not that she is masculine, it's the opposite, this is my point: How come girls that want to transition to be boys often tend to be pretty, with hamsterish features, soft skin, and delicate looking necks; seems to be a trend; odd??? Perhaps subconsciously they don't want to be 'vulnerable', I don't know, but to me if their bone structure and features were more masculine it would make more 'horse' sense, though perhaps not more sense.

i'm gonna go out on a limb here and as anti "woke" as I am, and sympathetic to the BS that Katie has been through, I think we may be looking at some of this stuff wrong. I'm pretty with the majority of the country as far as Trans Women in sports, and don't think 11 year olds should be on puberty blockers. That said, growing up, i knew or knew of a lot of gays and lesbians who definitely seemed like they thought they were in the wrong body, and if trans would've been more accepted, they might've transitioned or come out as trans. I don't think it's a majority, but i definitely experienced this, and think that at least accounts for part of the "explosion" in people identifying. I also want to note that as bad as Matt Walsh turned out to be, his documentary definitely shows some cringe subjects as far as the therapists he interviews, and the whole idea that they may nudge some children into going trans may be plausible based at least at what I saw. Her comments on bulimia and cutters has me thinking too, as someone only a few years older than her, this was something that was way more common, so it's an interesting thing to consider as far as her conclusions.

Completely disagree Graham is an extremist. Katie doesn't just believe trans people should have the same rights as everyone else. She indulges gender ideology somewhat. It comes off as pleading and apologetic to those in the gender cult who abandoned her, so that they'll see she is still somewhat respecting and playing their game and welcome her back. How is what Graham did mean? What's being done to lesbians by these straight men in our apps isn't mean? Lesbians being banned from our dating apps for saying we only want to date wonen isn't mean? The extremist position here is the gender cultists position of denying reality, coming for anyone who won't indulge it's delusions and or language. Not a fan of Katie's views here. She is wrong, and the cult will not have her back unless she's obeying the entire doctrine.

I saw Katie on Bill Mahr and My first thought was, “Wow! I’ve been noticing that so many cute “ butch” lesbians are turning into women too!” One of my younger feminist lesbian friends explained to me that she knows she is supposed to be a man because she always loved trucks, sports, GI Joes, hated dresses (ie. Tomboy.) That would describe me! If I was coming out these days I might think I’m supposed to be a man too. I’m glad I’m an old fashioned lesbian. Thanks for speaking on this subject!

Couldn't care less about who plays on what sports team. It's a freaking game. Feels like something bigots feel they can get away with because of 'unfair advantages' and all that crap. Height gives people unfair advantages. Body shape and metabolism gives others unfair advantages. Plus, like I said, it's a freaking GAME.
@AndrewGold1

Thanks for watching FreakyZed. I think you’re right that sometimes bigots might use that as an excuse. But part of being empathetic is being empathetic to all people. And to very many people, sport is much more than just a game. It’s a lifestyle, a career, an all-consuming passion. To those women already overlooked in other areas, it can be heartbreaking. There was that case of the swimmer for example who was number 550 or something in the county. She now competes in women’s swimming and has broken all the records. There are videos of her winning races by like ten laps. Surely you feel for the women in second and third place who devoted their lives to this - and will now be denied scholarships etc? That doesn’t mean we should hate the trans woman - she needs our empathy too. But at the same time, I wouldn’t want to just dismiss it! Anyway thanks for commenting and hope you enjoy this channel. It’s one that values people over ideologies, and doesn’t judge or moralise ! I think you’ll like it
