Kanami, being the egoless genius that she is, doesn't want to dominant in the songs, letting her bandmates shine till it's her time, then Mincho comes out briefly (always never enough), then goes back to supporting the rest of the song! Just love these humble, amazing ladies!

"Corrallium" is a BM's masterpiece. To really taste and feel it, you have to listen to it a few or a dozen times. And only then will you notice the harmony of the vocal duo Saiki-Miku and their brilliant, daring vocal performances at the end of the song.

I have always felt like Band-Maid compositions are like a cake. There is always flour, sugar, milk and eggs, but then after baking, there are layers, then there's icing and piping, then accoutrements. The combination of all of the above and who provides what and at what times determines the song.

When this song starts at a live performance, my Apple Watch always responds. "If you stay in an environment of 90db or more for a long time..." I think it's probably because of Akane's double kick that makes the air tremble, Misa's bass, and Kanami's guitar that continues without any room. This song isn't the only song that my Apple Watch warns me about, but once you're there, you'll probably be too happy to heed the warnings.

My favorite part of Corallium is the way Miku says "now" after Saiki says "Get me out, get me out" (6:58). It's so weird. My second favorite part is when they do the phased vocal ah's (10:45), like Miku and Saiki are playing ping pong with it, and the part immediately after that, where Kanami starts playing rhythm, and Misa plays lead until it gets into the solo. It's easy to miss all the weird stuff Misa is playing. The writing on this one is just so playful. It's my favorite Band-Maid song because of it.

Corallium is an aural masterpiece. It's sonic soundscape is wide yet tight. Tall yet narrow. It covers all areas with a texture that is hard to define yet so right. From Saiki and Miku's perfectly balanced vocals, to MISA, Akane and Kanami's individual parts coming together in a much greater whole. It seems as if all the instruments are soloing throughout the entire song. Yet it is so coherent it doens't feel or sound disjointed.

Great analysis! You were right about the ocean. This is from Wikipedia: "Corallium" is lead vocalist Saiki Atsumi's first lyrical composition. Rhythm guitarist/vocalist Miku Kobato also wrote lyrics for the song, but Atsumi's lyrics were chosen instead. The song is about the ocean, which she is afraid of. She stated that she thinks the ocean is similar to love.

Kanami writes most of her stuff for the song and what it needs. She never goes overboard for ego's sake as she prefers to let her bandmates shine. Yeah, this is high-end rock music. 🎶 Just imagine - Kanami, Akane and Misa bring this crazy insane, complex and highly frenetic piece of music to Miku and Saiki - and they somehow come up with the absolute perfect vocal structure, lyrics, melodies and harmonies to make this remarkable song. HOW!! Just How and WOW! 🤩 There have been a scarce few rock bands over the decades that have this level of ability. A very scarce few!! You HAVE watch the DVD Live video of these on your own time - Miku’s work live is crazy good. From not playing the guitar to playing on this track AND killing her complicated backing vocals! This is one of the many (many many) reasons I love Band-Maid. Not only do we get a standard of musicianship that puts them at the pinnacle, but also they are not afraid to give us this level of complexity and otherness. How many bands would try something like this let alone actually make it into such a superlative piece of music? Some progressive bands would probably have produced a whole album from this as a suite of songs - Kanami gives us the Ballard condensed novel version and it is so much better for it.

I wasn't there from the beginning but I did start listening to them in 2017 so I got in somewhat early. It's been fun watching their growth - seems like every time you assume they've peaked, they top themselves again - and trying to guess which way they'll go with each new song or album. On that note, you've surely heard by now: new album coming out this summer... well, most likely LATE summer, as in September. Since Unleash!!!!! came out, every new song we've heard from them (Memorable, Magie, Brightest Star, Go Easy, Promise You, Bestie) except for Shambles has been a bit on the soft-to-medium side... yet they've promised that the next album will be a heavy one, with Miku getting a solo and Akane getting a song with intense drumming. A while back MISA said she wanted to so some songwriting, but it doesn't seem like she's getting anywhere so far... on the other hand, Saiki's been studying piano and acoustic guitar and even did a solo piano piece for their Yokohama Arena concert. So they're still working to expand their skills. I have no idea what we're actually going to get this summer, but I'm excited to find out!

So in 2020 they switched record labels as well as management and to me this creates a distinction for me. When heavy, it's heavier, when frenetic, it's more so. To me, the last two albums are also more experimental. While changes in labels happen sometimes due to their rep changing companies and bringing them along, this seems like a move towards more independence in decision making. There's no more outside writers getting thrown into the mix like happened with Crown Stones.
@stevekane4922
@stevekane4922 3 ай бұрын
This was a conscious decision on their part - typified by the track "different". It was not just a new label, they jumped from one of the top media holding companies in Japan to another. Artistic freedom was important there. From that moment they were free, and I think the fact that pony Canyon are 50% anime was important because anime commissions are very lucrative and I think mincho and miku like doing them - gives them a framework to work inside. Sense has 8m plays on YT.

Band-Maid left Crown Stones for Revolver Records (different sub-labels under Nippon Crown) in 2019 and then went to Pony Canyon in 2020, but they didn't change management. They are still managed by Platinum Passport, as they have been since forming in 2013.
@stevekane4922
@stevekane4922 3 ай бұрын
@@I_am_Warthog no platinum passport was a boutique record company of Crown that now only handles vinyl for other outfits now, they went to revolver because it was fizzing out I expect. You confuse it with platinum artist agents, who are not managers but fixers within Japan, but part of the crown group. Outside Japan this job is done by the highly prestigious United Artists of Beverly Hills. Pony Canyon are a record company, who belong to another group and crucially do anime too across Asia. If you define "management" as deciding creative and career directions, they do that themselves, they're not babymetal. If they were five American guys in their thirties you'd maybe not so surprised. They produce the finished product - hire an old freelance collaborator to do the final master and hand that to the record company with artwork supplied by saiki. Most of the wrong myths were laid to rest in the detailed interviews with their collaboraters in the unseen world score book. Careful scrutiny of credits and copyright statements and the websites of various companies involved revealed all this before the book came out. Live Nation are hired to provide the tour infrastructure, but don't control it, as witnessed by the fact that the maids performed at many festivals, none of them owned or run by live nation. "She comes out of negotiations with everything she asks for plus the wallets and car keys of all of them" the band talking about miku. She is vice champion of Japan at speed poker, Kanami's parents, on agreeing to allow her to seek a career in music sent her to take a degree in business studies and economics in japan's top business school. Business and self development books are one of her favourite pass times. This is why they got on with Mike Einziger, he's the same kind of person if you read his Wikipedia. Mincho doesn't generally allow anyone outside their inner circle inside the studio, he was the first, since the beginning of the new regime. Their original contract with platinum passport was a normal western style recording contract with a low level of obligation on both sides except miku signed individually irrespective of how the band went and saiki too, she was already on their books. Miku had agreed to select from their list. If bandmaid had failed they were going to be obliged to become "dance maid" but had agreed with the others to carry on somehow. These are smart, well educated people. Miku was very streetwise from the start. For a young woman to cold pitch an idea to an older male recording executive was pretty exceptional in Japan. They call the shots. I'd be surprised if the original guys didn't have a piece of the profit, but they'd be fools to try and tell them what to do. The deal with Mike was a classic of this. Most collabs are deals between agents or record companies. They just said "let's do it" and probably got united artists to draw up the contracts for rights etc. Miku in particular is very pushy. But saiki is not far behind these days.

I think it's safe to say that musically you think a bit like the Maids, because you're the first one I've seen to associate the title of this song with the sound of it. And I think quite rightly so, because images of underwater worlds being overrun by waves did not just pop into my head once when I heard this song and thought about how the title came about. A great analysis that I think hits the nail right on the head. ✨ The difference between 'old-school' and modern B-M is huge in terms of their sound. You can clearly hear that they have evolved and that new ideas have emerged, which they incorporate into their songs. Not everyone is a fan of this direction, which can seem 'chaotic' at first and which may also be due to the fact that they clearly work according to the principle of not leaving out any of the ideas they have. I personally like it because it gives me a lot of options in their catalog depending on my mood, but I also think that they have to be a little careful not to put too much into their songs. They are performing a balancing act between their own musical brilliance and the listening capacity of their listeners (imo). I'm very curious about their upcoming songs and what direction their new album will take us later this year. Can I just say at this point that it's really a pleasure to follow your thoughts (and write down my own in return)? Most people don't think about things like the title and how it fits the song and also know how to express their thoughts. You are a very welcome breath of fresh air among all those who make reactions here on YT. A big thank you for that! 😉🌟 Greetings from Germany. 🙏🏻🙋🏻‍♂ _____________________ _"America invented rock. I wonder when would have been the best time for me to discover them. Definitely not Day 1, because I wouldn't have become a fan, and might even have become prejudiced by the fact they had external writers back then (and because of the outfits) - I wouldn't have known that that Kanami was writing many songs but they were all being rejected. I love all their albums - even their first one Maid in Japan, which is pop-rock and mostly unknown by casual fans as it's not on streaming services - but that's because hearing their new music made me *want* to love their old music too. I think 2017, after their first self-written album Just Bring It, might have been the earliest that I would have become a fan.

Okay, I wasn't there from day 1, but I probably found them sooner than many. I just got lucky. Not sure of the exact date, but it was late Spring/early Summer of 2017. I wasn't looking for them, didn't even know they existed. KZbin suggested a video called "Thrill" by a band named Band Maid. Click. Play. BOOM! 30 seconds in, I was hooked. I also sound Real Existence and Don't Let Me Down that same night - didn't get much sleep, LOL. There is a definite difference between old and new Band Maid. Partly because much of the first 3 albums, they were not writing their own songs. Kanami was, but most of them got rejected. Alone is the first song done 100% by them. So that is part of it, but also, Kanami is always writing and not afraid to try new things. As has been mentioned by many, she also has no ego. She will do whatever serves the song best and always stays open to suggestions and contributions by the other members. She doesn't feel the need to outshine her bandmates. They are all like that. It is so refreshing to see and hear and the finished product is all the better for it. Also, I really love the vocal contributions of Miku in this song. They really compliment what Sai-chan is doing.

Almost anyone can learn to play if they put in the time and can do the weird disassociate thing between their left and right hands, but to take that and then translate it into composing that is cogent and relatable?

I love the vocal harmonies and octaves, and the soulfulness of Saiki's voice during certain points. The instrumental parts are bonkers and I definitely need the headphones on to catch everything. I have sound related issues with this one too but this is the type of song that almost sounds different every time you listen to it for some reason. What a band!

Only Band-Maid could come up with a song this complex and for it only to be a bonus track on a single (until it appeared on Unleash!!!!!). Also, you should react to Hibana, off the same CD. Just as epic, but in a different way.

I think the Kanami part you're talking about is just slides while using her harmonizer pedal. As for the unison stuff, Misa and Kanami seem to love syncing up with the vocals at times.

The Corallium version you passed on is a definite rip, so good call -- we don't want to lose the NP channel! I agree with you that we need more Kanami, and actually, just better separation and balance in general. With some very notable exceptions (studio or live), mixes have often flattened out the sound. The most recent exception is their live performance at KT Zepp Yokohama. Archive tickets still available until next week!

As a bass player. I sometimes get carried away doing slides (less a bottleneck slide) on my fretless bass, most of the time trying to confirm that I am on the right note while the band looks at me weird😳,🤣. Kanamincho is probably doing the same while surely in Mincho-mode (mistake-free, of course), Po! 🦍🍌

The desire to cheat might be too much to bare but if you are strong enough, Band-Maid Prime will let you see a lot of what you're missing in KZbin videos such as both top-down and pull angle videos from Kanami and Misa playing Corallium. As well as all of the other members in various songs, concerts and interviews. Well worth the price of admission!

You are so right about the lead guitar being buried in the mix. With Band Maid, I routinely turn the bass down, the treble up, and the balance a bit to the right. It feels like a crime but the lead comes out a bit more and it just sounds better. Kanami uses both bends and slides in this song. The call and response with Saiki is done with bends and the descending craziness is slides. If you fork over a few bucks to subscribe to Band Maid Prime, there is a self cover showing just how Kanami plays this song. I don't know if they would permit reactions to the self covers and other videos on Band Maid Prime but, if they did, it would make pretty cool content. By the way, there is a live version of this up on the Instrumental Maid channel (Corallium Live at Shibuya Eggman). Nothing on that channel has been blocked, as far as I know, so maybe it has some sort of permission to use band content. Others might know.

Miku is my star in this song......I just LOVE when she runs right with Saiki. Those two are so awesome together. Kanami does that little guitar "spiral" sound as I call it, in Manners....only in Manners its ascending and she only does it once. Here it is LIVE at Shibuya Eggman, one of their very early career venues when they were starting as a band and you can watch Kanami's magic. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b6TQdYGLoduio5Ysi=wJm7vdAU-mhAIs_r

── And another song, "Corallium". A new color came out again with this song. Kobato: That's right. The two songs were a fight [Sense and HIBANA/Spark], so ... ([Hibana] is the battle theme song for the "All Japan University e-Sports Competition", and Sense was an opening theme of the TV anime "Platinum End"). ──Is it the flow of being healed by this song? SAIKI: Hmm. Will it be healed? (Laughs) Kobato: It's a song that drowns in content rather than being healed. SAIKI: The sound is usually intense. ── That's right. It feels calm from the beginning. SAIKI: I thought I would go as it was, but it didn't happen (laughs). ──The lyrics at the beginning are also "I'm lost in a sweet world." That's why I think it's a sweet love song, but it's not. From the second block, "Hey you!", The atmosphere turned into something like "Wow, get angry!". SAIKI: Ahahaha! ──SAIKI wrote the full lyrics for the first time in this song. What did you want to write the most throughout the lyrics? SAIKI: Well, the most important thing I wanted to say was, "Drowning is normal." I think it's an emotion that everyone has. But it's hard to say that from the front, or it's hard to expose. You have to choose the person you want to say it to, and you have to choose the relationship with that person. I think it's the emotional part that I grew up in myself. Isn't it the dark part? But that's something that everyone has, so it doesn't matter if you just leave it as it is or if you want to drown. I dared to use words like drowning, drowning, and wanting to drown. ──The phrase "drowning in something" is certainly not used in a very good sense, isn't it? SAIKI: Yes. I think it's a difficult part of Japanese, or because there are many things that can be expressed, but just as there are good things and bad things, if there are bad things, that may be the beginning of good things. I don't think so. I wrote it with the feeling that I would like you to look at the back and not give up your confidence. ── Some things do drown, others don't. You may be saved by drowning, and you may feel that you are alive. SAIKI: Yes. I wish I could make such a distinction. ──When the lyrics were about to be completed, did you come to the moment when you said "I was able to do it!"? I think there are times when it's hard to determine the completion by yourself, with a feeling like "Is this okay?" SAIKI: That's right. However, there was a moment like "It was decided!" It's like "I'm here! I'm fine with this. I don't have to touch it anymore." ──By increasing the number of lyricists in this way, the world view as BAND-MAID will expand further, and a different kind of gap may be created. Kobato: Yes, that's right. SAIKI: Before that, I'm still thrilled about how people would accept this, but I (laughs). ──You're thrilled, aren't you? It looks dignified though. SAIKI: I'm thrilled! (Laughs) But here, I just have to say, "This isn't my own thing." I just wanted to say, "I have this kind of part, but you also have it?" ── That may be important. When it comes to writing the lyrics in their entirety for the first time, it seems that some people may think that "Oh, was this person like this?" SAIKI: Aha! It's okay to think so. I wonder what? We are in a position to be in the spotlight. However, I also wanted to convey that "you are actually in the spotlight" ... I do have something to say. ── Then you can write a lot of lyrics! SAIKI: That may be true, that's how it feels (laughs). Kobato: That's right (laughs). ──Let's do that. However, by writing one thing like this, there may be some people who say, "I want her to write something like this next time." SAIKI: Yes. It is. I want to write beautiful lyrics. Isn't there a word that conveys beauty just by words, or that beauty is better than meaning? I feel that if the lyrics can be completed with just those words, it will be a new possibility. However, I don't know such beautiful words, so I have to study (laughs). I thought, "I have a lot of Japanese!" When I started writing lyrics and looked up the words, I understood that I’m lacking them. Of course, I knew it before that, but there are so many Japanese words that I could die learning them. ── Japanese is deadly. The words themselves are amazing (laughs). SAIKI: There are various words, though they have roughly the same meaning. I thought I knew it, but I think it actually exists (laughs). However, there are only a limited number of words that are said to be beautiful, and even if they are beautiful, there are words that do not fit the background of the times. I think I would be proud of myself as a Japanese if I could digest and use such things properly.

August 2016 I watched the first MV (Thrill) but it didn't catch my attention. At that time I was following Waggaki Band and preparing my first trip to Japan (the second didn't happen till now) . Then came out Real existence, Don't let me down, Alone and Non-fiction day and I start to pay attention. But it was Secret my lips, one year late, that told me they were worth to follow. That they have something to say musically. and now I am following a couple of Japanese bands: Gacharic Spin, Lovebites and East of Eden, mainly.

The lower voices are Misa and Miku, few people ever give Miku credit for the solid core that she provides to most of their songs. Listen to the work that she does behind Kanami's solo, it's not just Misa. You didn't even credit her for the stunning harmonies. You got something against pigeons?

"Kanami being too low/soft in the mix" is a very common comment. However, it is best to think of her as a composer rather than just a guitarist. There are videos around of her just sitting at her laptop just composing the day away. She is low in the mix because SHE wants to be low in the mix...It's her choice/composition to be so. It think it is partially so her guitar doesn't overpower Misa's bass (part of why Misa's bass is so promenent from song to song) and Saiki's voice, and partially because she takes joy in a coherent overall whole composition. When she wants to stand out and "pop" in the mix, she absolutely does...
