Thank you so much for uploading this video! My girlfriend and I got into climbing the last couple of years and we are expecting a boy that is missing his right hand. After many sad thoughts it is so inspiring to see James climbing and it gives us a lot of hope and joy!

It's so cool to see paraclimbing content, I started climbing recently and I'm disabled. A lot of the classic learning tips don't always fit my disability, I feel embarrassed at the gym sometimes because I look weaker than I should be due to paralysis in my lower legs. But I realise the things I'm managing are victories every time I go and finding what works for me is going to take time. And the grades don't mean anything when it brings me so much joy Thanks for spotlighting such an awesome climber
@bemde
@bemde 10 ай бұрын
Yees, go! Grades are for people who don't bother to define their own measure of success, and to be honest, a bit lame. If you set and reach your own goals, thats worth so much more! And do not hesitate to still project with strong, non-disabled people. Maybe ask them to imagine them doing the route in crocs, they will be in awe of you and can probably help you with shoulder/body positions! :D
@bub8002
@bub8002 10 ай бұрын
@@bemde that is actually a really good idea, it can be nerve wracking to ask people to help you think outside the box for technique but putting it like that seems way less intimidating haha

Great video. I really enjoyed seeing James' technique with balance and different body position, as well as toe hooks to slow moves down or reduce pressure on the arms, and drop knees - essentially bringing in more technique than a climber with two hands typically would. That orange problem at the end was amazing. I'm probably going to watch this a few times and I've a friend who could benefit from ir. I found the Leeds Paraclimbing Club after watching a video on this channel.

I can assure you that the steep overhang at 6:05 definitely felt harder than most other V2s in that gym. Having tried it, while it looked easy with the positive holds, the holds were somewhat far apart so it's not really a easy V2 unless you're really tall or have good reach.

Very impressive! Forgive my ignorant question, but why don't paraclimbers use prosthetics for their missing limb? Are prosthetics just not good enough yet, or are there other reasons?
@JamesRudgeParaclimber
@JamesRudgeParaclimber 10 ай бұрын
Happy to contribute to this one. A lot of leg amputees will use a prosthesis as it helps with support but as there is so much pulling involved in the arms, I actually think it would be more of a hindrance than a help for me, particularly when I am used to using one hand and can still get good purchase of it:)

As a visually impaired climber I am happy to see paraclimbing represented. For me finding the next holds is the biggest challenge. If you have to start searching where the route goes it costs a lot of energy. But climbing is a lot of fun and a good training for coordination, balance and core strength. Sadly there are almost no competitions here in Germany with classes for blind and visually impaired climbers. There simply seem to be too few of us who are interested in competitions. With no depth perception I transitioned into sport climbing, because it is really hard for me to judge how high I am in a boulder if I want to jump down. The rist of injury is just too high.

Hey Markus - Have you spoke to any of the German Paraclimbing team?
10 ай бұрын
@@JamesRudgeParaclimber I am in contact with one of the organizers of the German Masters. He gave me a lot of information regarding classification and so on. But I still got to get a hold of the paraclimbing trainer the local section of the DAV (Alpine Association) is supposed to have. Unfortunately I was sick for the last two weeks.

I’m glad you enjoyed the video with James, and interesting to hear about your experience with climbing and bouldering with a visual impairment. Hopefully greater representation overall and work like the work James is doing for inclusive climbing leads to more people with adaptive needs finding climbing and being able to participate competitively. 😊

@@hannahmorrisbouldering I'll try to establish an inclusive climbing group at our local gym. But it will take some time. And unfortunately the building isn't really accessible because of a lot of stairs. But at least we have a paraclimbing trainer. Regarding competitions, it would be nice to have some smaller ones on the national level. But it seems like the German Masters is more or less the only national comp with classes B1-B3 and then there are only international competitions. Which sounds quite intimidating if you are just starting out, to be honest. But who doesn't like a good challenge? ;-)
