This song is such a sleeper track on this record. The vocal melody during the chorus is unbelievably mesmerizing , and the haunting outro just shivers me, its so good. Also according to Matt, Lionel Richie was supposed to sing the bridge part, but he was too busy.

I read this song as the journey of enlightenment via psychedelics. The first verse is Protag being guided through an Ayahuasca Ceremony, being gently laid down, adorned with the Mark of the divine, exhaling his trauma and ego, inhaling his journey to "hell" ie the beyond. The chorus is his realization that he spent his entire life on the surface level, never understanding how deep the universe is, until he was suddenly plunged into awareness. In the second verse, he internalizes how empty his life had been and comes to understand how different things could be if he could stay how he is right now. But in the third verse, the trip ends, and he's brought back. His "armor" returns and he loses sight of his true self in the shade of his ego. He begs for help to shift his perspective back, while being forced to embrace his "scar" ie his trauma and old ways. The syn section between 2 and 3 is the peak of the trip, when he's past the ragged entrance and feels at one with everything. The "two" mentioned are referenced throughout in the chorus, it's him and "the other one". In meditation, they believe that there is the You who acts, and the other You who observes the acts. It's the part of you that judges everything you do. There's no one but you(peace, acceptance, no judgment)...two(the return of the Judge, the other one in view). When the Judge returns, bc the drug is wearing off, the soundscape shifts into a descent from the high as Protag falls back down into the real world hell of insecurity and anxiety.

Personal current interpretation of the “too”: When he sings there’s no one but you.. too” (Syn’s voice can be perceived as another part of our main character’s consciousness or a deity- real or imagined) the main character (M Shadows) is realizing/acknowledging that he himself is an entity within a world. He’s come to realize that he is not “nobody”. Just as Descartes says “cognito ergo sum” (I think therefore I am), he realizes that he must be. Especially after the journey seen in cosmic, there is the realization that he not only exists, but will continue to do so in some capacity along with the other soul referenced in Cosmic across space and time for all eternity. But this is my current interpretation which as I think about is already morphing. I may think about it differently tomorrow. Thanks for your videos! I hope you dive more into this incredible album and its infinite layers!

Love your reactions to the songs on LIBAD! As you referenced, I felt this track was heavily connected to Nobody in the sense that the protagonist is having an out of body experience, not dead but in a sense watching his lifeless body, which may be the meaning of "two" in the bridge. The chorus seems to coincide with the theme of ego death throughout the album. "But the water swallows you" isn't surprising, happens to everyone. But it's shocking for the man who thinks he's Almighty enough to walk on it. We are all the same in the grand scheme of things with one body and one life to live, and the protagonist has been humbled enough to finally understand and embrace his. At least that's how I interpret it lol

I seen them last night. Crowd was going crazy when playing popular songs off the old albums. Place was dead when they were playing new ones. In the beginning people were yelling trying to keep the show alive while we all sat and tried to wait out whatever this crap is.

Personally I’m not a fan of this album in particular and I really think this album was half assed. They are too talented for this type of thing. a lot of people call it an alice in chains rip off but it's not really. sure the main riff of the verse is very "them bones" but the song adds lots of nuances to it and adds tonnes of different parts on top of it. that bridge is so good tho it makes the "them bones copy" worth it also i will mention that the bridge caught me off guard on first listen. i got too comfortable when i knew i wasn't supposed to, then i realised "this is a7x this is what they do"

Can you do one on Game Over? The singing styles, specially the crooning found later in (D)eath makes me think it's the whole album summed up in the first song. Oh yeah, can you find an explaination for the crescendo sound heard at the end of (O)rdinary, but also in We love You and for no apparent reason in Cosmic?

Also that crescendo sound you’re referring to is called a shepherd’s tone. Someone in the comments of another one of my videos informed me about that! I feel like it’s an added layer to emphasize the ramping intensity of whatever the song in question is about. In We Love You and (O)rdinary, it resembles the madness and sameness of existence, but in Cosmic it’s more of a longing feeling. That’s how I see it!

Just a thought on the Shepards tone- perhaps it’s indicating that we always feel like life is leading up to something and building to some great epiphany, achievement, or even enlightenment only to discover that it’s gone nowhere and has been essentially meaningless. At least that is a brief summarized version of my current thoughts. I don’t have the time to write the many pages I could write on it, but more importantly, nobody has time or desire to read all of that lol.
