Interesting, as a guitar player i have only learned songs by memorising and have therefore a different approach. I always learned the progression first, and listen a lot to the original. Then there was always place for interpretation. But it is really interesting to see how people who never used to do this. Nice video.

Thank you! Sadly I missed learning how to read lead sheets when I was younger and since then have always defered to written music, the classical approach I suppose. Glad you liked the video, I sure learned a lot making it.

I've always played to memorize the sheet music .

This was fascinating learning how you personally memorize a piece, and the amount of time it took. (I also loved the "performance trance cut in.) I'm going to have to try this, even though I'm terrible at keyboard.

Thanks @ijsman1494... remember, you're better at it than you think you are!

I had a piano teacher before I studied with David's teacher (and I was never as good as David at the piano) who told me this statement from her teacher (some dude she revered out of the Cosmos): "If you can't play the piece from memory, you don't really know the piece". 🙂 Have a nice day.

Great quote! Funnily enough, some of my favorite Bach artists famously use sheet music in performance... la grande dame and GOAT Rosalyn Tureck, for example. Among the living, Christine Schornsheim uses an iPad in the AllOfBach WTC II videos. For me, it's definitely harder to put the page away when it's Bach.

I only started learning piano at 65 yoa, and might have Aural Aphantasia, so I might not be the one to make a comment. I'm still trying to memorize my first piece, Prélude in C Major by Bach. I transcribed it into Thoroughbass and can now play it in most keys. But I haven't memorized it yet. I made it my goal two weeks ago to really commit it to memory, so this video was probably Google using their Al Gore Rhythm to ensnare me into the rabbit hole. it's done wonders for my keyboard skills, so I'm looking on the bright side. I'll keep working at it and let you know when it's in the old noggin. PS I hate the iPad slide up as much as page turning.

Great idea to transcribe into thoroughbass... one of the hardest classes I ever took, back in the day, and had to pull the Pass/Fail ripcord if memory serves (you started it with the puns... Al Gore Rhythm... Love it!) Anyway, glad to be a part of your Google-constructed wormhole. I'm certain you'll memorize it, let me know how it goes!

@@TheAmateurPiano Definitely. I mean they're kids movies, but they're delightful.

@@rossrichey55 Pixar used t make movies that were nominally for kids, but were heartfelt, funny and compassionate of spirit. And they had Randy Newman. 100% recommended. (Though avoid the Cars franchise-it's their fall from grace.)
