As a plumber, you forgot one very important step turn off the water before you do so, there should be a shutoff valve on the cold side of the heater also in some houses the anode rod won’t come all the way out because it will hit the ceiling it’s almost as tall as the heater so make sure you have room to pull it out before doing this if you don’t just grind it off and don’t let the other half fall in hopefully this helps!

@feeshyfeeshy galvanic anode, or sacrificial anode, is the main component of a galvanic cathodic protection system used to protect buried or submerged metal structures from corrosion. They are made from a metal alloy with a more "active" voltage than the metal of the structure. Wikipedia Funny that's the definition, go look at your water heater and what is labeled on the cover for your "anode". Guarantee it doesn't have 2 N's. Why don't you try pasting the url to where it says annode. I'll wait.....

@@justingriffin5895 sorry I don't understand. I reread my comment and I guess I should had said I tried to flush it more often then yearly and did sometimes but usually I'd just flush it in the spring time because I had a lot of minerals. I typically replaced the rod probably every 10yrs just to be safe. Many years ago we used to cut them off about 3 or 4 inches if the water had a lot of software because it would stink and that would solve the problem for the smell anyway lol. Now days you can buy them made of different materials and replace them and not risk damaging the heaters prematurely. I guess it's something with the magnesium and aluminum that makes it smell so much worse but I can't remember. We used to call them anal rods also. I know removing them does shorten the life of the heater which we always made the clients aware of but if you smelled that water then you would understand lol. Regardless I've seen water heaters last 20 plus years without replacing the rod but well water can sometimes be pretty harsh and destroy heaters, and copper pipe prematurely so I just replaced mine as preventative maintenance. They usually would look pretty bad when I replaced them but still fully intact. I did it because I could and figured why not but I think for most cases every couple years is excessive.

*I would do it sooner than that. Once the rod is gone the valves on the house are the first to go because they'll rust right away in some water types.*
@my2centz196
@my2centz196 2 жыл бұрын
@@JohnSmith-kr7xd I've never seen the valves fail but the water combined with the heat can corrode the heater and cause it to fail. I suppose I have seen gate valves fail but the rubber doesn't hold up well under any conditions. I personally hate gate values and have no idea why anyone would use them but I see they still sell them. I replaced them all in every home I've had before they've failed. Better to fix that problem as soon as possible. I also replace them when possible on any job. Even if I'm just setting a vanity or toilet on a reconstruction job I replace the stops with ball valves. I have on rare occasions ran into defective ball valves but few and far between. I've maybe seen 5 in 30 years lol. As far as the rods of my own personal water heater even after 10 years it's had more then enough left to do its intended job however you're definitely correct that some water can be pretty harsh. I've seen copper pipe so thin from acidic water that you could squeeze it between your fingers. I personally like pex because it's more durable especially in cold weather. My last home the water heater lasted quite a while. My new house is on town water and I will probably check it after 5 years to see how it's holding up against the chlorine. I imagine water being to basic can also be a problem but I'll have to wait and find out. I know chlorine and iron doesn't agree so well anyway. As for customers the only calls I get for water heaters are obviously elements or thermostats, replacing them all together, or on rare occasions sulfer smell. Used to cut the rod down to 4 inches for that but now we replace it with a fancy new electric rod. Well water does not typically have chlorine issues except on the occasional well shock which most people rarely or ever do so. At least if they do they typically do it themselves lol.

I've done this for more than a decade, my 22+ year old water heater is still going strong! Inspect the anode annually and measure the diameter and note that on a tag on the heater, that way you have a record and can calculate approximately how quickly it is eroding. 1. Shut off the water first, and turn the water heater all the way down to its lowest setting, and let it cool to avoid burning yourself. 2. Your ceiling may not be tall enough to remove the rod, as it is quite long. In this case, after you have shut off the water, turn off the water heater and allow it to cool down. Then drain the water heater. With the water heater drained, you can then disconnect the water supply, and tilt the water heater at an angle, and then remove the rod. 3. With the rod replaced, this is now a good time to really clean out the water heater, especially if you have hard water. They sell a product called a turbo tank cleaner for around $60 that you hook up to a drill and a water hose, that will agitate the sediment at the bottom of your water heater, and allow you to flush it out.

All water heater manufacturers require annual maintenance, You should flush and inspect every year and replace every 2 to 4 years or as needed, It really depends on water quality, I’ve seen anode rods 5 years old that have never been replaced and they’re like brand new on the other hand I’ve seen them only a year old and completely disintegrated down to the wire

@JenniferFuchek
@JenniferFuchek 2 жыл бұрын
@@watercarepro9610 no, technically you're right. However, to change the rod requires draining the tank down slightly. By doing so on a neglected tank, you're messing with seals and stirring up sediment. You're more likely to have a leak by changing the anode rod after 10-12 years versus doing it every ~3 years to begin with.

For those wondering how these work, that is basically a sacrificial metal rod (not sure what material) and it corrodes and degrades to save the liner of your water heater. If you let this go too long, your liner will corrode.

@@Urbicide Yes, some are easier than others and with 2 guys it goes a lot faster. However, a typical installation takes about 4 hrs. It takes an hour to go get the materials / load up… another 2 hrs to drain and install the new one, replace the shut off valve (if needed) replace the interior vent assembly, install electrical ground cold to hot to gas, install TPR discharge pipe, water connections, sediment trap and gas connections and earthquake strapping…. Then another hour to load and dispose the old one. It’s a lot of work. If the WH is in an attic or a basement or tight interior cabinet- it can take even longer.

There are 3 types of rods, magnesium, aluminum and jointed aluminum. The jointed one is literally just so you can get it in. It's almost 4 feet long, and if you don't have head room get that. Magnesium vs aluminum is a corosivity issue. Which if you replace every 3 to 5 years likely won't matter.

You can replace the anode yes. but usually the reason why I tanks fail is because of the sediment calcium buildup on the bottom of the water heater. Because of the sediment you start to heat the metal up more than it should be in order to heat the water. Metal can only take so many heat Cycles before cracks. If the heat transfer is made as equipment is designed to be without sediment the metal can transfer the heat easier and will not overheat the metal trying to heat the water. If you just drain your hot water tank once a year your hot water tank will last you a lot longer. Also every manufacturer design is to only last about 10 years. So you can waste $30 every year which would be $300. Or you can just flush the tank.

The plumbing guy said "I've never heard of anyone doing that" (that's a quote!). I'm about to install the 4th anode since the heater was installed. They're 5 year anodes (,you can buy longer), and I install a new one every 4 years. You do the math.
