Finally someone covers the Karpov variation! I feel like it doesn't get nearly enough recognition for how solid it is just because you have to learn a bit of theory to refute Ng5 ideas but you did a very good job of reviewing the main lines. Great video!
@jacksarkisian5 ай бұрын
thankyou bro! Karpov is great, what initially attracted me to it is keeping my pawn structure together and not doubling my pawns (nowadays i'm much more comfortable with doubling my pawn structure, but 600 Elo me not so much). Ng5 ideas are super tricky (especially in the Four Knights Caro which i completely forgot to mention in this video, i've only ever really faced it in OTB games thus far but its really strong). aside from that though, if you spend a few hours studying Alien Gambit lines you'll pretty much completely refute any of the sacrificing nonsense, its much better for black if you grow comfortable playing against it.

@jacksarkisian it seems 1900 elo me is on the same page as 600 elo you haha... I just don't like the idea of being worse in all endgames because of the pawns
@jacksarkisian5 ай бұрын
@@pqrkymc the tartakower is quite nice with the doubled pawns, you can easily undouble them in a lot of circumstances (because the doubled pawns are more central, doubled flank pawns would be problematic). i do the same thing quite often with the white pieces, purposely doubling my pawns for the open central file, can lead to super dynamic games and not risking too much in the endgame.

love the videos Jack, I was playing any random opening as black for the last month, now I've just stuck to the caro kann for e4 and kings indian defense for d4 and I'm winning a lot more, currently on a 13 game winning streak and up over 100 elo in the last 4 days. Also I love the Daniel Naroditsky videos on the caro kann, especially when he's playing against it as white, as it helps me understand white's ideas and how to refute them.
@jacksarkisian5 ай бұрын
thankyou, glad for you bro. you can technically also play c6 against d5 if you ever have problems with the KID. when i initially started playing Chess i didn't want to play passive openings so i ended up learning the Slav Defence (d5, c6, c5, d5). super underrated opening. Danya is great though, his KZbin channel is like the Chess dictionary, anything you need will probably be somewhere there.

in my 2100 games when i rarely play the caro kann that breyer endgame you talked about is trending so much, and ive seen magnus playing it recently, and im not sure why
@jacksarkisian5 ай бұрын
i think Magnus would probably play it because he has by far the most raw Chess talent on the planet. once you trade the queens in the Breyer, the theory ends. there is no easy way to quickly draw in the Breyer because no pawn commitments have been made, its very much up Magnus' alley as it fully involves (at least at the Grandmaster level) constructing advantageous endgames from move 10. putting pawns on weak squares, creating complexion weaknesses, super niche stuff that only Magnus would think of. in my opinion its not the most fun variation, but its certainly not better for white which is always a plus.

@jacksarkisian5 ай бұрын
you're probably right, but from thousands of games i've only had 4 in the Rapid pool that have played this. as long as after f4, exf3, Nxf3, Bf5, 0-0, e6, Ne5 you play Bg6 (and don't hang Nxf7 ideas) you're pretty much completely safe. theres also things like the Rasa-Studier gambit in the Caro that i didn't include. my general opinion on gambits like that is that because they occur so infrequently, its completely reasonable to assume you might be tricked by it once, review the game & then never fall for the trick again.

You should have mentioned f4 against nc6 in the advance caro, it’s very strong and the reason I myself swapped to e6 instead of nc6
@jacksarkisian5 ай бұрын
it actually doesn't matter if you play e6 or Nc6 in that line, as long as you eventually play e6 and lock in your bishop (because if they play f4, your bishop will end up on b7 and white's overextension adds value to that diagonal). if Be3 is ever played trying to hold the pawn, you play d4, cutting the bishops defence off, and winning back the pawn. surprisingly, the d pawn is very difficult to win for white, and because of its existence, Qa5+ is an incredibly strong move. you're right though, should've included this line but a very niche one at that, i almost never play against it.

@jacksarkisian5 ай бұрын
you're right, Sicilian is obviously better than the Caro-Kann, but the skill level needed to properly execute the Sicilian is crazy (especially in Rapid, where you don't have minutes to think on each move). i wouldn't recommend it for anyone whos just starting to play Chess - i would recommend the Sicilian to 1800s who are getting bored of their positions with black playing either the Caro-Kann, Modern or KID.

i really like the Reti, super clear and dynamic plans and from what i've seen at the Grandmaster level a very consistent opening. i don't know too much about the nimzo & its endless variations though. i wouldn't particularly recommend it, especially in online Chess where you don't have as much time to think. from what i've seen its very sharp for black and not so much for white, although you can get some nice positions you could also get some REALLY bad ones.

The Caro is definitely good, but this is kind of clickbait. Changing opening won't help you completely stop losing
@ahmeddggame89215 ай бұрын
Kind of yeah 👍🏾
@jacksarkisian5 ай бұрын
in a general sense probably, but for people who are finding themselves worse out of the opening for black the Caro-Kann is certainly a good way to stop losing. its the easiest opening to quickly equalise as black without needing to know sharp theory, and if you're looking through the lens of a newer Chess player who probably overcomplicates their own game, self-destructs and confuses themselves - the Caro-Kann is 100% my recommendation to stop losing so much.
