I am 4th generation crocheter. I have crocheted and sewed for over 60 years. The reasons I do both of these had evolved over the years. It started out something to do since I had health problems when I was young. I have made gifts for family and friends. My hubby was out of work for about a year. I sold my crocheting to supplement our income. Just a funny note, when my nephews got older, teenagers, I asked them if they still wanted homemade gifts. They got all upset that I would even think that.❤. Now that I am retired, I mostly donate my items. Crochet has got me through some good and bad times.

❤Sara❤ this is an excellent topic! I often think back on my crochet journey which started when I was about 10. I learned with small items like hats, scarves, etc then went to blankets. Over the years, I dabbled in crochet mostly because I was raising children and returning to college to obtain my degree for nursing. When I was pregnant for my girls I was put on bedrest for half of the pregnancies, and crochet helped a lot during those times. When I went to work as a RN, I worked night shift and there was almost always some "down time" that I could sneak in a little crochet here and there. As a cancer survivor, again, crochet was there to help me through recovery! Now that I am retired, I have a lot more free time and yet again crochet is my companion!!! Since retirement, I have branched out into amigurumi, and wearables, as well as functional items like bags etc. So, crochet for me has been a wonderful thing to be with me through all of the stages of life and has given me many many benefits. I crochet for anxiety control, depression control, gift giving, and overall sanity as well as to keep my mind and body "busy". Hubby is quite supportive of my "hobby" and says I should sell items, which I have on occasion, but I never want my love of crochet to be tainted by it becoming a job. Also, I have made some wonderful friendships in the crochet community. I've also seen some of the "ugly" out there and it makes me so angry. I choose JOY bc that's what crochet means to me. Thank you SO MUCH for being so cheerful and "part of my youtube tribe". Your ideas and videos are great pick me ups and give inspiration for wonderful projects to make. Thanks again!❤❤

I have crocheted since 7 years old, so it is just part of me! I cannot sit and watch tv or sit in the car as a passenger and not have something in my hands. Crocheting and knitting are also indicators of my mood. If I don’t want to pick up a hook or needles, I know that I am having a bad day emotionally. Then I know to get in some exercise or modify my routine so I can “snap” out of it. I love to make things for others as well.

Choose joy! My matrix also! Crochet kept me feeling a little bit productive last year when I broke my leg and had 3 surgeries to get it right again. I was non weight bearing for several months and really needed to be able to do SOMETHING! That time also gave me a chance to learn more stitches and techniques that I hadn't had , or maybe taken time to learn when I was able to be going about my regular routine. There's a blessing in everything!

Hi Sara, I started to crochet for my rescue dogs, they were on the small side & when we would go for walks, (they were in a dog stroller) their ears would get cold, so I learned how to make snoods for them. When I was done with them, I just kept on crocheting, which keeps me from snacking. Now it seems that I can't watch TV without doing something with my hands.. Its sometimes relaxing & sometimes very frustrating. But I enjoy doing it.

Im disabled and homebound, so I dont get out alot. Crochet is what I do for a variety of reasons. 1. it staves off boredom 2. it gives me useful items 3. it feeds my creativity 4. it helps keep my arthritic hands limber. For me its a hobby that I surprisingly build another hobby around. I have been crocheting since I was an 11 year old catholic school child where the Nuns saw sitting and watching the other children play while you are forced to crochet as a punishment. I saw it as a way to not have to interact with others so I was naughty a lot. Today it serves so many purposes in my life. The yarney community is one of them, being housebound it helps me to not be so lonely as I can interact with others who enjoy the same hobby.

She even made a wall hanging of the Virgin Mary!! She'd make me poncho's and vests. I still have a lot of the things she'd crochet for me, they're very cherished. 💜😊

I crochet just because I like to. However, it keeps my hands limber, I am a part of a group who make prayer shawls and lap blankets to give away to those who may be grieving, to celebrate new babies and other charitable endeavors. Long story, but a severe allergic reaction to chemo 3 1/2 years ago, and 60 mg prednisone a day, plus handfuls of allergy type meds during that time to get me through the chemo, I was a mess. The chickadee paint by number I had gotten wasn’t good because I couldn’t sit on a hard chair at a table. The vintage stamped cross stitch kit I had gotten wasn’t working out because of the drop-sy numb fingers of neuropathy from it all, so that small needle was troublesome. I needed something I could do sitting in the recliner (with my feet swung over the arm of the chair, still my most comfortable position, lol). But then I remembered I had barely started dabbling with crochet years ago. So I started looking at some you tube videos since I can get You Tube on my tv screen, but was still having trouble figuring it all out. Then I came across this really awesome video that was easy to understand and follow, some Sara Sach woman. 😉😄It was awesome. I could figure it out. You’re still my favorite you tube channel. And then besides your instructional pattern videos, I started watching your coffee and crochet Tuesday videos, and This Or That, and I look forward to each video you do. I’m trying to learn to slow down when I crochet so it’s helpful to my blood pressure, not making it worse. I tend to have a tight stitch, and race to the finish because I can’t wait to see it finished, and sometimes I make a few of the same things to give as gifts, and want to get them all done on time. But I’m getting better at relaxing more and loosening my tension a bit. I think that is more beneficial health- wise too. It feels it. No more uptight stitches! I try to aim for loosey-goosey, so between that goal and my natural (up)tight tension, it falls somewhere in between. It’s all good. 👍🙂 Sara, you and your family are in my prayers. Praying for healing, comforting, and blessings for you all.
