As an ex-bloke selling superyacht coatings, that video of course picked my interest. Living in a tropical country, my main concern is corrosion protection or resistance. My Ultegra groupset shows advanced stage of “leprosy”, and am thinking about getting it recoated locally,… and maybe this is the way to go.

It's paint. Paint is a generic term that covers everything from an artists watercolor to a 100% solids polyurea. "Ceramic" I believe, refers to the polymer or resin it could also refer to the pigments. All (actually most) paints consist of vehicle (resin), pigment, and solvent (100% solids coatings are a bit different). Ceramic coatings are crazy expensive. You can have your bike repainted multiple times before you get close to what it would cost to do this once. Sandblasting (actual silica sand is no longer legal for this use in the US), abrasive blasting, etc. are all the same thing. In the US "shot blasting" refers to the use of round abrasive resulting in a round or more round profile. Various types of materials of various sizes are propelled to the product's surface to create a rough profile to promote adhesion of the coating to the bare surface. This is not a DIY process, although some DIY equipment is available. The calipers in the video would lend themselves to abrasive blasting because of their bulk. Bike frames might not. They are thin and blasting could warp them. I've seen this on aluminum sheet metal which was much thicker than aluminum on a bike frame. However, the ceramic coatings I'm familiar with were designed to promote a tight bond to previous coats of paint. Whether or not this applies to an individual bike depends on the paint system used on that bike and the solvents contained in this kind of product. Everything scratches. What they're talking about is what paint manufacturers refer to as "abrasion resistance." There are test protocols to determine which paint films are more abrasion-resistant than others. Results are often posted on the product data-sheet. Ceramic coatings might be the most abrasion-resistant of all coatings, but they will still scratch just not as easily. He's right when he says they are speeding up the cure. Old fashioned "baking enamels," and I believe they are called "stoving enamels" in the UK, are fully cured when they leave the oven after they cool. Those ovens are typically operated at 300F (149C). This kind of product (sometimes referred to as force cured) achieves most of its hardness and most of its full chemical cure in the oven, but as long as 10 days more air dry at about 75F (24C) and 50% RH or less are needed for full cure. Longer if it is placed in a confined area. Anything this abrasion-resistant might be difficult to impossible to repaint without complete removal. And anything this abrasion-resistant might be so difficult to remove that abrasive blasting would do more harm than good. The idea is that it would not need to be recoated, but stuff happens. Verdict: interesting idea, has its pluses for certain, but probably overkill for a bike at this point. Paint technology is always advancing and if this catches on and the cost comes down sufficiently, it would be well worth looking at.

I wonder why Aiden thought it was strange that Ceracote was common in the firearms industry. We have been using it for decades on firearms. It does fall short in UV fading resistance, it still scratches, and it rubs off from holster wear. Still better than powder coating etc.

So, if Cerakote requires an oven to set the coating, then you wouldn't be able to use it on any carbon fiber bikes as that would melt the carbon fiber, right? So, RideWrap is still not a bad choice for carbon.

@@elizabethpoley6882 cerakote cure temperature is comparable with post-cure treatments of thermoset epoxies. So not only it shouldn't effect the structure, but it can be integrated into existing processes.

Lots of untruths here. Wish you guys did better research. I’m an auto detailer, and I can tell you, cerakote is not much more scratch resistant compared to regular automotive paints. The only reason it is “scratch resistant” is because the finishes are dull, meaning you will not see micro scratches or swirls. If you notice, cerakote doesn’t make full gloss finishes, because it simply is not possible to be high gloss and “scratch resistant” If cerakote were that great, huge automotive companies would be falling head over heels for them.
@AMLay1234Ай бұрын
Wish guys in the comments did better video watching . . . most of your reaction is addressed in the video, if you listened without already thinking you had the answers.
@jaro6985Ай бұрын
Surely it is more scratch resistant as it has a higher hardness level than automotive paint. Or by automotive "paint" did you really mean powder coat?
@lemeneidАй бұрын
@@AMLay1234 Wish guys like you actually did some research and you would know that Cerakote does not advertise scratch resistance as a benefit of their paint because there is no tangible benefits of cerakote over usual paint systems in terms of scratch protection. What Cerakote is good for is in applicaitions where heat resistance and corrosion are far more important.
