Thank you for this. I’m a psychiatric nurse who left the bedside to work for a mental health mobile crisis team. I love restoring furniture. I tell people I flip furniture so I don’t flip my lid 😂😂 i’m having my house painted and initially thought that I didn’t want shutters anymore, but then I decided that they would look stunning if I strip the 50 years of paint and restore them to their beautiful wood! wish me luck 😊

I really appreciate your message in this video, Barry. I watched it right after returning home from a furniture focused thrift store near my home. Their things are relatively high priced, so I have only ever purchased a very few things from them. As I was there today I literally thought that I would like to purchase one of the items, that needs some restoration that is outside my skill set, and send it to someone like you who could do such a great job on it. I'm so glad the woman who sent you the chest did so. It was great to see it returned to its like new condition.

About 60 years ago I had a cedar chest that needed "fixing". All it needed was a new coat of finish on the top as the finish was scratched, but not the wood. So I stripped and sanded my first project. Things grew from there: my mother's sewing machine cabinet and various other projects. The zen like feeling from working on these objects with a story is incomparable. The smell of the cedar wood, of drawers in an old vanity that smell like face powder and rouge. You know what I mean. Thank you for the trip into the past.

I am 62. I raised 2 Millennial sons and work with mostly people of their age down to 18 year olds. I love them! They are open, and ask questions without any reservations. They don't treat me as though I don't exist. They are funny and kind. We work in a Maximum Security Prison. It is a hostile environment no matter how you look at it. I give them every bit of support I can. And I learn something new from them regularly. There is mutual respect. I love younger people and believe in their ability to carry both old traditions (such as woodworking) and new technology forward.

I know that this cedar chest was well loved, but it is now ready for it's new forever home devoid of paint. I know all too well about old scars and the phantom pains that linger under the surface. Sometimes a smell, sometimes a scene, or even a snapshot brings back the memories. You need to think about the reason behind it and what to do to make it better or release it's hold on you. Not always easy but well worth it in the end. The chest is beautiful. Life is rough and we have to make lemonade out of it before we can move on. Thank you for sharing and have a great day

Still a Fan, Friend, and Viewer of your work, Barry..Even when I had a house, I had just custom built a seating booth from an old dresser and finishing it. I sent you pics of it back then. That was my last big furniture project, since my Multiple Sclerosis got worse. Lost my home, car, no longer drive, but I do Art now at home. Just wanted to tell you I am still watching. Still inspired, and appreciate and respect your work. To me, it is a dedicated Art Form well earned.nYou came so far over the years and improved immensely in everything you do. This video and furniture is NOW my all-time Favorite piece you have ever done. So far. Truly remarkable. Just wanted to tell you that. 💙-and with that, I'll leave with a quote, "When life seems dark, a project looks impossible, just look Somewhere Over the Rainbow. The answers are always within you." Beautiful work!! I could listen to you all day!! I too take the time during restoration to ponder the hands of all the people who've touched the piece before me. Was it a wedding gift, was it brought home for the new baby, was it a hand me down for the first apartment? That's why older pieces inspire me the most because i can't go back in time but i can learn about the period style, the wood they chose to use and methods of craftmanship that are found sometimes under layers of more modern makeovers. Every piece is an archealogical dig of sorts never just scraping, sanding and slapping on poly for me. I get so much out of learning everything i can about a piece and also imagining all the things that can never be known.

excellent video as always. you bring contemplative calm to your work that is a relief in the manic hyper maximalist energy that seems to dominate social media at the moment. hide glue is generally less strong than most pva based wood glues. lower tensile strength and shear strength, less flexible and more brittle. most of this doesn't come into play in common furniture applications. hide glue is strong enough to be similar to the lignan strength of the wood which is as strong as is useful in most cases. no point in having the glue be much stronger than the wood in most cases because the lignan will fail and cause the join to fail. hide glue is very repairable though, so it is an outstanding option for something that will likely be repaired in the future. we also know how hide glue changes over a century but we do not have a century of data on pva glues yet, so you know how it will behave in the future.

Thank you. This really helps

@@MadCityModern a generally good rule is if you are gluing up a panel or something that shouldn't ever move and won't experience acute forces needing repair often, go with yellow glue. if it is going to be a point of repair like where a rail meets a stile then use a repairable glue. a furniture maker in the 90s taught me that and it has proven good advice several times for me.

LOVE the finish! I have a 1922 White Rotary treadle in a tiger oak cabinet. The previous owner had painted the cabinet red. After I stripped it, I finished it with Tung oil. I've also used it on a couple of wood-soled clogs. (The uppers are leather, and the manufacter just says to never walk in grass. I put Tung oil on them and they've been fine.) The clogs were a pale wood, possibly pine. They got a little darker, but not noticibly orange.

I'm the lucky owner of three chests. One is a proper cedar chest belonging to my paternal grandmother. She took really good care of it so it's still in great shape. The other two were both crafted by my maternal great uncle, aka Uncle Bob. The newest was made for me as a hope chest in the 80s when I graduated from high school. The other originally was made for Uncle Bob's fiancé and was long enough for her to store her wedding dress without folding it. When the engagement was called off he stored the chest until he thought of something to do with it. Many years later he decided to remake it as a graduation gift for my mother. He cut it down to a more manageable size and added some copper decorations to the corners of the lid. Currently we have decorated the top with photos of the many parties enjoyed by family at our house over the years. So that we can change decor easily we taped the photos to a sheet of butcher paper and sandwiched that between the lid and a sheet of clear plexiglass, held in place with the copper corners. It's really nice having family history in practical furniture.

I discovered your video at the end of a stressful and somewhat chaotic day. Watching it and listening to your calm, assuring voice was a real blessing. Seeing how your patient persistence with something once damaged eventually gave it new beauty and lengthened its life has encouraged me. Bless you!

Once again, along with heartfelt, plain wisdom, there are hidden wonderful carpentry tips. I never thought to submerge my hide glue container in (what I'm assuming is) a glass of hot water rather than messily heating it on a hot plate. Such a simple solution!
