I adore Colocasias, they're my top 3 genus of plant. That being said, I don't keep them as houseplants, I've found they really dislike being indoors AND they attract spidermites like no other plant I've ever had. I use them in the garden, and that's really when they look the best in my opinion. I do think people are going to be disspointed in these new hybrids when they get their hands on them, BECAUSE they're so annoying to grow indoors, you really do need HIGH light, and tons of nutrient and water to keep these guys in tip top shape. I always buy/order them in packs of tubers,it's a gamble because there are times where you order something and get something else because they often get mixed up, but these really are plants you should buy as tubers and save mad money on.

I agree. Alocasia and colocasia struggle with me indoors but thrive outdoors in the summer. I also thought they are perennial so they go dormant in the winter like a birch tree or a Venus fly trap. I'm not an expert just a nerd.

I can confirm all this i live in gabon (africa) in a humid and hot climate. No lower than 23 degrees at night. And they prefer full sun in a high humidity area. They do attract spidermites just like alocasias. They like having a deep rich dense soil to grow in and to not get over watered but stay moist. If you are growing them huge indoor props to you.

@Kaylee Ellen - in Hawaiian “WAI” sounds like “WHY” So Waikiki is “WHY-Kee-Kee” (Wai means “fresh water” btw) and Colocasia are called Taro here, and are a huge part of the culture as they where a main food source during the pre contact period. I have a bunch of “black Ruffles” and they have the coolest subtle color patterns on their leaf.

I bought 5 taro corns from the produce section of a grocery store last year for around $3. They grew into huge elephant ears. They are just the basic green colocasia. But for landscaping purposes it was a very cheap way to make a massive impact Tip - They need to be started indoors a couple months before the last frost. It’ll take frustratingly long. Put them in soil in a warm place & keep the soil lightly damp. No light is needed until they break the soil. If you’re patient, they will sprout & be very rewarding 🌱 Edit, I got a white lava plug last year. It barely got any white veins after a full season outside. I also got one of the black varieties as a plug. Both plugs really struggled to thrive. By the end of the season they were about 1.5ft tall with 4”-6” leaves. By contrast, the green taro I grew from corms were easily 5ft tall with 3ft+ leaves, absolutely massive. I suspect that plugs will need several seasons worth of babying to establish corms & really go gang busters like when you start from a large corm

They could have been diseased. If they aren’t growing crazy fast chances are, they are not getting enough sun, it’s not hot enough outside, or they have mosaic virus/ something else. I guarantee you that a lot of the varieties that have disfigured leaves are bred with virus. And if that’s the case, any aroids you plant nearby or in that spot or pot will also catch it. Sanitation with bleach, and cleaning your tools is really really important. Please learn from my mistake. I lost tons of aroids from mosaic virus.

Anyone who wants the big colocasia, yes you want to dig the corms and store them inside. I keep mine in a pot outside, cut them back, leave them in soil, and bring them inside then set aside in a dark spot of my house until spring

I *love* my colocasia pharoah's mask, it really loves the light (or direct sun). I use a sansi 36w bulb on it, and it is always reaching towards it, the stems only stop elongating once its about a hand length away from the light. Can confirm that it is a prolific grower

The leaf coloration is both based on how much sun the plant gets, and also the newest leaves are the most colorful; the older ones generally fade in color a little bit. I think a lot of the varieties that look similar also are different heights.

Diamond Head is readily available here (deep south US) during the growing season, and what that image doesn't portray is how there is a literal crystal sheen overlaid on top of each leaf. Hawaiian punch is also readily available here - have several clumps myself and they are a beautiful vigorous grower. Same with Mojito here as far as availability - they have a satin overlay on the leaf. Quite muted, and very worth having. White lava and tropical storm - easy to find here, Tropical storm is one of my favorites to grow due to its beauty and contrast - no velvet, rather more of a flat overlay - sorry Kaylee :( Jellyfish looks sick... like its too hot and it cant deal. NO. lol Im surprised Electric blue gecko didn't make it. I have one, changes colors throughout the day, sometimes deep purple, sometimes electric blue and shiny - beautiful. This Genus is a "quick-bucks" genus for the reasons you stated - totally agree. The growth rate and ease of propagation would definitively drive market value down rapidly. If grown properly a quart sized plant can well over quadruple in size within a single growing season with any member of the genus. For this reason, I would never pay more than $30 USD for any start of these plants. They need direct sun, rich biodiversity in the soil, heat, loads of water with rapid drainage unless grown on the edge of a body of water, and loads of nutrients and TADA... giant colocasia. Also, last note: Some members of this genus will clump, while others will run via stolon.

Yep! I’m in the deep south US and a lot of these varieties (and except for the super rare, of course) can be found at any of our local nurseries. I love Midori Sour, I didn’t see that one here. I grow most of mine in water, and they can be found in ditches all around. I find that’s where they do best with some regular fertilizing.

I pay around that price wholesale for tiny babies of the wholesale "Waikiki" from the patent holder. "Pharaoh's Mask" is also super expensive, patented, and so the propagating easily point sadly goes out the window for some of them.

Yes, another proud member of the "Deep South Club" here. I'm in Arkansas, have many of these varieties. I'm sure they are rare for the UK. Mine stay outside year round, always in a constant trickle of water that is drainage of natural springs. I don't fertilize mine, I feel they get enough on their own. Their leaves on average are about 2-2.5' wide x 3-3.5' long and huge blooms. Some are in full shade and some full sun. It's the water that makes the world of difference! Mine in water are up out of the ground now, the ones in dry ground have not yet peeked out at all.

One thing I have to say about Colocasia, they do NOT like to dry out. Not in the least. I live in Miami and I keep mine outdoors. Needless to say, the outdoor humidity here is ridiculously high. Regardless, it was a huge learning curve for me as they kept wilting no matter what I did. I finally put them in a rather large saucer in order for them to never dry out. That was the trick! So they are potted in soil and live on a tray of water, basically a semi-hydro situation. And they absolutely LOVE it!! I have no idea how people can plant these in the ground 🤷🏻‍♀️

If anyone reading this wants a fun project, or wants to see how some of these plants would fare in your home, go to the grocery store and pick up some taro corms! Here in the United States there are three species sold as taro: eddoe (Colocasia antiquorum), looks like a brown egg in terms of size/shape; taro (Colocasia esculenta), looks like a giant version of eddoe; malanga AKA yautía (Xanthosoma sagittifolium), looks like a brown cucumber. Of the three, the first is the most common, and the latter two are usually only seen in Asian grocery stores. Grocery store labeling and even the Google search results mix them up frequently. All three have cultivars which are popular in the ornamental plant trade. For example, C antiquorum 'Illustris' and C esculenta 'Hawaiian Punch' both mentioned in this video. The most common cultivar of X sagittifolium in the houseplant trade seems to be X sagittifolium 'Mickey Mouse.'

I believe much like caladiums, colocasia, most of them require a dormancy. More heat , humidity, Light and Water. Unless you live in a tropical climate they are best as an outdoor summer display plant, and then dug up and stored in a cool dry place until temperatures go above 60 Fahrenheit

Colocasia have, since I can remember, been one of my favorite plants. Same with its cousin the caladium. I just love a good elephants ear. I have the mojito and it’s gorgeous and gets massive! It’s winterized rn but I’m about to wake it up soon same with all my caladiums too 😍 can’t wait!

I bought a very immature Thai giant colocasia in October and have grown it up indoors all winter under grow lights. I find it does well with high heat and humidity and well draining soil. It suffered yellow leaves and root rot when I used a more dense soil that held too much water. When it’s happy it puts out new leaves very fast. Once we get past our frost date it’s going to go outside.

I came across a Sport variegated Black Magic in a nursery last year & popped it into a 12 inch pot inside of a 14 inch cover pot (to keep it semi-aquaticly) AND IT OUTGREW THAT POT IN LIKE A MONTH. I was too lazy to repot again so I left it, & the roots were crazyyyyy. They grow so insanely fast & large. Keep water in the bottom but dont submerge the bulb

I looove my fontanesii, mine has darker leaves than the photos I see online, they are also quite thick and quite large. Also the color of the black coral pairs very nicely with it, it’s leaves are slightly smaller than the fontanesii and thinner, and it has been burned by the sun in a couple spots. (I live in a very hot place) I’m a sucker for dark foliage but that Waikiki is definitely one I’d buy if I saw it at a local nursery!

I have scoliosis, and had surgery when I was 12, some days I'm so crooked you can really tell. My husband sometimes will grab both shoulders and realign me. Or he will push on my ribs where my curve is, honestly the best feeling ever. Like pressure just disappears in places around my torso. Colocasia Elepaio also called Milky Way is an easy to grow stable variegate. It is one of the colocasia that likes alot of water. Here in Florida I grow it in pots in 100% peat and keep it wet. It makes alot of offsets. It is about 20.00 for a 4 inch pot. Really striking.

Hmm i picked up 2 colocassias last summer at a big box store. They crapped the bed pretty dramatically then went dormant. However one 's petioles just kept growing and growing and growing to the point i had to stake them to keep them from collapsing. Finally started pushing pups the past few weeks, i cant wait till they mature!

I have to say that I love Colocasia. I've had a few. The issue that I have with these plants is that they are Spider mite magnets!!! Every single one that I had was destroyed by these pest. Its very stressful having to constantly be watchful. For this reason, besides the absurd cost of some of these, I would never own one again. Sad, because I really love them. Thank you for the video, I didn't know some of these existed. Great video!

I genuinely wasn't very much into Colocasia before I got my first one. We do have a few specimens of the ''Mojito'' in my school's greenhouse, so I ended up snatching a corm, brought it back home and man does it grow fast! I love a rewarding plant, especially since I mostly collect Philodendron, Alocasia and Monstera which are slow growers for the most part... ''Pharaoh's Mask'' was already on my wishlist but I've now added the ''Nebula'' and ''Witchery'' cultivars to it. Let's hope that they end up being affordable at some point!

Watching this immediately before going out to buy 5 for $15 corms for the summer. My regular degular green ones last year got to 1x2 foot leaves in two months after a very slow start off dormant corms. They have gorgeous depth of green on green on green color on the leaves up close. They add great tropical vibes for cheap in my decidedly temperate garden, so much that I've already ordered a few novelty varieties and am desperately looking for a specific cultivar as a Mother's Day gift for my Mom.

I ve got two bulbs of Colocasia White Lava, and a Mojito! Got them from a UK shop Farmer Gracy in good price. I potted them indoors currently under grow lights and waiting for them to hopefully wake up 🙂 since it's freezing temperatures in Greece. I plant my taro bulbs in straight compost. They grow super fast and are hungry. Elephant ears have been a favorite of mine since childhood. I also grow them outside and let the foliage die back in the fall and store the bulbs. I’m in Michigan, so it’s way too cold to just leave them outside.

I love colacasia as garden plants in my warm Costa Rica Weather, I grow Colacasia 'Black Magic' or 'Black Coral' in a lot of places. Recently got an ilustris and it's amazing. The Thai Giant I think it looks a lot like Xanthosomas that grow native here, so I don't grow anything like that :P What I think is most of the times Colacasias generally don't do so well in pots for me, I think they grow the best in the garden on special moist places.

Last year was THE year of Colocasia in my country. Everyone was so into it, the price was so high but this year nobody wants it anymore. The price dropped so much. What used to be around 1k, now is less than 100 and it's not even sold.

I think I remember you covered the Monstera Deliciosa Wonder aka Tricolor in one of your videos quite recently. In comparison to that: what's your opinion on the Monstera Deliciosa "White Monster"? They also go for really high prices, but I can not find anything reliable about them or if they even are a real thing. I'd love you to cover this if you haven't already in some form 😊

Maybe it's my Pacific Islander background but I find it extraordinary that there's no mention of perhaps one of the most globally and historically important plants: Taro (Colocasia esculenta). This species (I think that's what the video means by "category") includes heaps of cultivars nentioned, like the mojito (and a few not mentioneld, like black magic and amazon queen) because they've been so extensively cultivated around the world, not for their appearance, but because we eat them.

I fall in love with almost every alocasia and the first colocasia I like on this list is the mojito, why do colocasia seem to underwhelm me so much? it doesn’t make sense I fully expected to have a massive list of colocasia that I would want. But that hasn’t happened

I live in a tropical place and most of common colocasia i see survive in a gutter and colocasia pahroh mask only cost like about £15-20 per one big pot.
