This is Euphorbia hirta L., popularly known as Erva de Santa Luzia, it grows spontaneously in most of Brazil, with the exception of the Amazon region.
In the video we show two forms of preparation so that we can enjoy the benefits of Erva de Santa Luzia, but we cannot prescribe dosages, to know how much to ingest and for how long it can be used, it is essential to seek a qualified professional to work with herbal medicines that through a consultation, in which an anamnesis is carried out, which considers your health condition in an integral way, all the conditions you present and medications that you may use, so that you can then prescribe a specific treatment.
We need to encourage the use of medicinal plants, but in a responsible way, as some of them have very potent properties and cannot be used in a shallow way, without a more detailed knowledge of the interference they cause for those who already have some disease or use chemical medicines.
Among the popularly known uses is the use of cold tea for the treatment of conjunctivitis, a use that gave it the popular name of "Herva de Santa Luzia", in reference to Santa Luzia, who in the Catholic faith is considered the protector of the eyes and of vision. Studies have already proven its antibacterial action, which explains its success in the treatment of conjunctivitis.
But notice that this is a plant that releases a kind of milk, a latex, so in order to use it safely, we need to know how to neutralize the effect of this latex in the preparation of tea.
Santa Luzia Herb TEA RECIPE:
- 1 tablespoon fresh herb (leaves and stalks)
- 1 cup of water
First boil the water, when it is bubbling add the fresh herb, cover and let it cook for two minutes, then turn off the heat and leave covered until the temperature drops, the ideal is to drink the tea warm.
Its use as an antipyretic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory for acute episodes, that is, an inflammation that appears 'now', which does not come from a chronic disease that you have had for a longer time, has also been scientifically tested and proven.
In addition to the analgesic properties, it has also been pointed out that Euphorbia Hirta has sedative, anxiolytic and relaxing properties, as it acts directly on the central nervous system. Considering that self-medication is now a public health problem, knowing that we have a plant in our backyard that we can pick and make a natural tea seems much better than resorting to pills to relieve headaches or muscle aches.
However, do you remember that we said that you need to consult a professional with a qualification in phytotherapy? That's right, this is important because a simple tea with analgesic purpose, from a plant with potent action like this, can interfere with other medicines that you may use, especially the so-called 'black box'.
Its anti-anaphylactic properties have also been tested and found to help slow down allergic crises, having an antihistamine action and modulating the immune system. So Santa Luzia herb can also help in the treatment of allergies, asthma and bronchitis.
Its anticancer properties have already been successfully tested for several types of cancer, especially breast cancer, where it contributes significantly to the death of cancer cells.
Its antiophidian capacity has also been tested, with more than 90% effectiveness, inhibiting the action of the cobra's venom, one of the most lethal snakes. We did not find studies with other species, we hope that research advances in this direction.
In addition to using it as a tea, we can prepare a tincture with the plant, as it is a way of always having it “ready to use” at any time:
Fresh plant tincture:
Fresh plant tincture is made with pure, undiluted alcohol, as it will release water during maceration. It is made using a proportion of 25% of fresh plant in relation to the volume of alcohol, that is:
250 g of fresh plant
1 L of alcohol.
Method of preparation:
- wash the plant and let it dry the water superficially;
- chop the plant into small pieces to increase the withdrawal of active principles;
- place the plant in an amber colored glass bottle;
- put the alcohol on the plant;
- store in a dark and dry place for 10 days;
- at the end of the maceration period, strain the tincture and store it in dark colored bottles;
- store the jars in a cool, dry and dark place.
The shelf life of fresh plant tincture is only one year.
