My parents bought- 5 of those tiny notebooks a few years back, and my dad would take them with him when he went Lyft driving as a side job, writing down interesting conversations he'd had after it happened. I always thought that was really cool of him, and then I saw your video on it, so I dug through our junk drawer and found one of those many notebooks and I now carry it around with me. Instead of scrolling through TikTok for hours, I write down ideas and draw little doodles mindlessly in my notebook. Thank you for the huge inspiration to help shorten my screentime. Usually, on a high day, my screen time would be at least 5+ hours per day. Now, it's down to currently one. Although I still do have a digital life with my pc (which I still use sparingly, like you said, there's some things that your computer can do way better than the notebook can, so-) and I also feel like with the notebook, I'm a lot more social. On the internet, you'd see me looking down at my phone almost all day, you'd never be able to catch my attention. But now, I'd probably be the one talking to the person, trying to get their attention. All I wanted to say, was thank you. You're awesome, I'm so glad you've shared your notebook experience with the internet.

It sounds counterintuitive but being able to "slow down instantly" (as said around 7:04) is the new superpower of this era. And yes, manually writing ideas down not only forces one to slow their speed of ascent to a sustainable level but the act also implants the idea deeper into our minds for subconscious processing.

I went and bought a pack of 3 pocket notebooks like this and that very night I had a dream where I was journaling. I've carried it the past two days and have brought it up to a couple coworkers, one of who seem intrigued the other mentioned that he already regularly journals. I've tried to do regular journaling before, but neve formed the habit. Being able to carry it with me like this is great because I can force myself to make it a habit. Doesn't even have to be important notes, just anything. I jotted down a short poem today with waiting at the dentist. "roses are red, Violets are blue. I gotta get a crown set today. Booo! 👎" ...I dont like going to the dentist if you couldn't tell.

Thanks for this. It made me realise how terrible it must be to be young. I'm going to try to be more forgiving when young people seem to be so dumb. I grew up in a world where everyone had 'mental clarity' all the time and so I am vigilant about not letting any devices act like they're smarter than me. That means making sure my phone doesn't access the internet, except when I tell it to. I also block ads, don't allow alerts about emails or social media, don't pay for any subscriptions and never link accounts across different platforms. I found you by chance because I am, in fact, always going at the speed where I can notice trees and people holding up little notebooks. I also pretty much think 'fuck productivity' most of the time. This is what it's like to come from the 20th century. Good luck in the future. I'm sorry that some of my generation taught too many of your generation to disregard the trees. That was wrong.
@sostoked07 Жыл бұрын
This was an interesting comment! I do agree that previous generations have more mental clarity than those of us who grew up in the information overload era. I shadowed a doctor who, at 62, was able to recall dates of meetings and events in a snap while I had to pull out my phone and scroll clumsily through my calendar. She's quick on her feet, very sharp, and still does patient consults all day. I admire your generation, and hope that with more "analog" practices I could have your focus!

I had seen MANY journal videos before, but your last one really stuck with me for some reason. I've always preferred writing lists and notes to using digital options. As someone who is a ruminator, I've started writing down those sudden thoughts or feelings (especially negative ones) in my little notebook instead of sitting and gnawing on them like bone. Oddly enough, I've found that just getting these particular thoughts OUT of my brain helps to make space in my head to focus on other things. Then I can go back to the notebook to ask if that thought, feeling or idea is worth exploring more fully or if it was something transient that just needed to be released instead of carried around.
@viktorp82132 жыл бұрын
I tried this and it really helps, unlike most other journaling tips on youtube. I have 2 notebooks. One of them I spam with thoughts, tasks, good things I did, as well as things I didn't do. At the end of the day, I transfer that data into another notebook, which I take care of more. In general, I procrastinate a lot less, and remember my tasks, as I transfer the ones I don't complete today, to another day, making sure I don't forget them, but still keeping them organized and not as a mental weight.

When I started journaling almost a year ago, it was for a similar reason: I wanted to get down my thoughts for mental clarity. I've since deviated from that purpose and go moreso for daily reflection to have a collection of my memories to look back on in the future, but sometimes I do wanna try physically collecting my ideas in a notebook. The biggest thing that turns me off from it is the idea of having to physically search through a journal for my various ideas about various creative projects or endeavors when I could very easily search keywords in my notes app to find them instead. However, I love what you said about how the act of writing in pen forces you to slow down. I like the idea of taking my time writing out my ideas to let my mind dwell on them longer and better flesh them out.

Pocket notebooks are a great idea! I've been journaling for years and one of my "Ah ha!" moments was using really cheap notebooks. I keep Ryder Carroll style bullet journals for the important stuff that I need to remember and those need to stay clean and organized. For the mess of day-to-day stuff I keep a pocket or A5 cheap notebook that I can beat up, tear pages out, what ever. That "throw away" feeling is so freeing! If it's important it'll find it's way into my main journal, but for the random ideas, check lists, stuff I'll forget, I carry something like this. Thanks for the video.

A manual notebook as opposed to note-taking on your smartphone has many advantages. I would advise using a pencil rather than a pen. Pencils get you closer to the mystery of writing, their marks are easily erased, there is the pleasure of using a sharpener. And you can take up drawing !

I don't carry my notepad everywhere, but every time I have too many thoughts or emotions I write them all down, no matter what. I find that I constantly judge myself, and it feels like there is always an invisible audience that I carry around with me, but I write everything down anyway, as honestly as I can. I do this for as long as I need (sometimes for hours), until I literally run out of things to say, and THEN, something AMAZING happens: this "organic silence" rises from out of nowhere, and in that moment I find a solution (like 99% of the times). I DEFINITELY recommend it.

I “interview” my thoughts to discover whose voice they are reflecting, especially the accusing ones. A thought may say “ you are not good enough” I will reply “in what way” the thought will respond and then I eventually ask it, “who told you that?” And that is when the source is exposed, a critical adult in my past, teacher, parent, boss, girlfriend, etc. then I force today’s truth on it to resolve it. It works for me.

Awesome idea! I actually got this idea not long time ago. I was thinking of using the same type of small notebook for cases when I would feel depressed, bad or discouraged. I would write some positive quotes or solutions I would forget to use when I'm in a tricky situation (for example when I am in a bad mental or emotional situation, hopeless, depressed, anxious or when I cannot call a friend for a talk). Some quotes for immediate grounding : the sky is blue the grass is green. Or a question : what do you see around yourself? Describe 5 things and colors. > for feeling present. I think this is a great idea because you can physically feel the notebook in your hand, you can swipe the pages or we could even spray some perfume on the pages to smell good (haha), but nowadays with phones , tablets it's so inorganic with the material, also the blue light can be harsh or hurting sometimes, but a netbook, some paper and pages, or even some drawing inside can be grounding, organic to the touch.

What I like about the small notebook is that it's not in anyway intimidating. I love notebooks and have a few nice ones, but they're either to big to write in comfortably when an idea strikes me or I feel like I stand out to much if I take out even cheapo I got to scribble in. With the small one, it's unassuming, gets bent out of shape, etc. and there's a nice sense of accomplishment when a page is filled. There's no real "pressure" to write in such a small space, and because the pages are easy to fill in even with just basic ideas there's a sense of accomplishment right away when the pages begin to fill up.

I do love what you are thinking. Recently I've become dissatisfied with my writing. I had notes that literally made no sense at all. There were obviously letters in what appeared to be words, and it looked a lot like English, but beyond that .... who knows? In an attempt to correct this problem, probably exacerbated by decades of touch typing, I decided to slow down and concentrate on correctly forming each letter as I wrote the idea out. Once I got past the frustration, I noticed that writing more slowly, beyond improving readability, allowed me to fully form the idea as I was writing it out. I found myself thinking about my choice of word, and that caused me to think about what I really meant. Just a personal observation that you might find useful to consider. Should you decide to make a video on this idea, I'd love to watch it.

I've always done a lot in physical notebooks, from practical stuff to in-depth emotional work and personal archiving. I'm so grateful that I can just pull a journal off a shelf when I'm stuck on something in my life and go, "How did I cope in that similar period five years ago?" I also have a blog where I likewise get into difficult life subjects, but curiously I find I'm more likely to return to my physically recorded memories than my digital ones. (And, while I've got family members' diaries and notebooks going back over the past century, old devices of mine from only twenty years ago may not even function now, or files get corrupted!) Physical limitations like paper size help my productivity, because I get discouraged by long task lists, or when a task I didn't do one day migrates to the next day, especially if it happens with the same one repeatedly. The longer I skip a task, the more it feels intimidating or unachievable, but there's usually an emotional reason. I notice that sooner when migrating a task to the following day's list involves physically rewriting it on a new page, than I did when I was tapping a couple of times on a screen. Now I'm more likely to ask, "Why am I getting in my own way here? Am I expecting too much? Can I approach the task differently and get unstuck about it? Or have circumstances changed enough that I can de-prioritise it?"

The section about driving heavily reminds me of the novel, *Fahrenheit 451* - a common thing people do in the book is to go for joyrides at over a 100 mph, as a way to escape their dissatisfaction in life. A big thing to also note is that they’re not *aware* they’re dissatisfied, as they’re always kept distracted with TV screens, never taught to think for themselves, fed advertisements… the more I think about it, the more I realize the similarities between Bradbury’s fictional world and ours

I have notebook systems for outside of work, but I have one for work that helps me keep track of everything. I'm currently very stressed at my job, my memory isn't great currently, I'm trying to get out, and making a list calms me down and gets things done.

You are a very helpful and thoughtful young man, sharing this insight! I went and got some mini composition books and have begun capturing my own thoughts and ideas. Richard Branson also recommends a notebook, so great minds think alike. As the decades fly by, it becomes easier and more desirable to slow down, the way you describe. You start to realize that if you're always rushing, you'll miss all the great stuff life has to offer.

I was searching for some inspiration for new notebook for this season (I habitually keep journals, always have) for the last several years I have STRUGGLED to keep my journal and I got so fed up that I tried to convert my normal journaling habits to digital using apps like Evernote ect and lemme tell you, I cannot for the life of me find a note taking app or anything resembling one that 1. Offers the same flexibility setup and features as what I need in my journal and 2. Replaces my affection for pen and paper.) My relationship with pen and paper goes back since I was 4 and could write small sentences. In elementary school I was so profoundly proficient, and did every single thing long hand, teachers were shook. They created little classroom awards just to acknowledge me.. in middle school is when both my generation and the majority of the global population really started to implement typing and technology into the classroom where you were required to type out your homework or post it to an online education platform ect. That was still the case for the rest of my education, but I blatantly defied that technological shift. At the beginning of every school year including college I would introduce myself to my teachers and then tell them that if there were significant writing assignments or even short answers that required it to be typed, that I would gladly type it out for them afterwards, but there was a 99.9% chance they were getting my assignment written by hand double spaced on very good quality paper and I was unwilling to accommodate them because for one, I have impeccable handwriting and crafty mind, so my handwritten assignments on good paper were the same dimensions and appearance as anything written in MLA or APA, footnotes and all... But also I would probably forget that the assignment existed had I been required to type it first go around (ADHD, if I'm not doing it myself, probably doesn't exist).... So anyways that was a whole tangent haha I just wanted to share that as a crisp 29 year old lady I still choose to do absolutely everything by hand and it is something that sets me apart from others in my generation I think. My attempts of going digital the last few years have failed miserably. I was losing faith in my journalling habits until I found this series here that is about your Everywhere Book. So, thank you very much. It is so refreshing to find someone I can relate to age/personality wise, and relates to the strictly unmatched magic of pen and paper.

I am a week into it. It does help me with mental clarity, although I feel it is difficult to write your own thoughts & feelings and on the other hand jot down ideas in the same notebook. Maybe I need to carry 2 notebooks. Thanks Austin for providing quality content like you always do!

You can look into travellers notebooks, it's essentially a little leather cover that you can attach "fillers" to it aka small notebook refills

Rotate notebook 180 degrees, flip, and fill in from back. This way you can keep the two note “modalities” separate; i.e. “ideas” from first page in, “thoughts/feelings” from last page in, to use your division. Eventually when book is full they’ll meet somewhere in middle. Or alternatively, ideas from first page in, todo lists/projects etc from back in. That’s one way to make do with just the one whilst preserving some cleanliness.

I’m gonna do this cause it looks fun. I’m not doing it for mental clarity because I think I know my mind better than I have before, this is my experiment to become more observant to my surroundings😊

I like your point on asking myself the question , while you ask yourself question you will definitely get the answer , asking more you get the more questions . How great are when almost question been record that’s mean you get so much your currently thinking system can’t solve problem

I now carry a notebook. Mine cost £1 as i live in England. But i use it every day. From the back for ideas, front for day to day things I need to do. People give me funny looks when I pull it out of my pocket, as to them it's so old school. I am 49 and still open to new ideas. Hey I should write that down!
