So this pool was left for around 8 years since it was last used!! The new customers had only moved in around 3 months ago and wanted to get it up and running again! I took some under water footage with a go pro and it looks amazing to be honest!!! But it had to go!! Check it out and let me know what you think!! @poolboyb4nners helped me on this one! Thank you for the help it was much needed!

I went the other way. We had a drought, so couldn't fill the pool. I added plants and within 4 days dragonflies were mating and laying eggs. Next added 12 x galaxias and 10 x tilapia (indigenous species). Haven't added anything since except occasionally a bread slice to watch the feeding frenzy - there are now a lot of fish. And it's a thriving ecosystem - no chemicals, no electricity, no effort, and it looks great. Also fun to occasionally catch some of the occupants, especially for the youngsters. The fish, dragonfly larvae and water striders ensure there are no mosquitos, and it's a really relaxing place to sit and take a nature break during the day (I work from home). If I ever sell and the new owner wants a pool? Drain it into bladders, relocate the fish (there's a dam just down the road), repaint with fibreglass, and refill from the sterilized bladders. Much nicer as a natural pond, tho'. And I can still take a dip - it's like swimming in a mountain pool...

Actually I think that letting fish out into the wild is dangerous for them. Since certain fish (Like goldfish for example) will start breeding like crazy, and over populate whatever body of water that their in. Unless you already have a plan for that, then this comment will be for nothing :))

The house my wife and I bought a few years ago had an abandoned pool. Had a snapping turtle, a red ear slider, and an unknown amount of frogs and tadpoles. I rehomed the slider to my fishing pond and moved as many frogs as I could to that area as well. The snapper went to a friend's pond. We filled it in at that point.

If you should decide to have the pool filled in and done away with, You will need to remove the decking and about 1 to 2 feet of the upper portion of the concrete side of the pool and the bottom should be jack hammered so that all the dirt you fill in will be able to drain water into the ground below and a rising water table will not push the old pool upwards out of the ground. Not as complicated as it sounds as all the old debris can just be tossed into the pool as it is filled in. There is no need to remove anything, just break it up so ground water can get to wear it needs.

Years ago, I had a neighbor with an above ground vinyl pool 18' dia x 5' deep. He let it go for about 3 years. One hot day his daughter's new 18-yo boyfriend decided he wasn't gonna let a science project stop him. He dove into the pool!!! From my upstairs window, it was the most colorful display I had ever seen --- red and green and orange muck radiated out from the impact. He actually swam underwater to the far end of the pool and resurfaced with slime pouring off him. He wasn't that bright to begin with so I couldn't tell if the plunge affected him.

I’m seeing quite a few comments talking about putting fish in pools and please guys NEVER put fish in ANY swimming pool. No matter how thoroughly you clean it, there’s always going to be trace amounts of chlorine left. This can make fish extremely sick, if not killing them entirely over time. Even if they’re just fish, they deserve to have chemical free water to live in.

I know it's only a swimming pool, but when we envision this on a larger scale, it shows how destructive mankind is. What took 8 years for nature to make, took one day for man to remove. We are our planets biggest enemy. By the way, fantastic cleaning job.

We had almost the same neglected pool when we bought our house. Unfortunately under all of that neglect was $30k of plaster, plumbing, coping, concrete and equipment replacement. I wonder how much was left out of this video between the end of cleaning and final product.

Get a bucket, drill some small holes in it, sink the bucket into the sludgy mess and then stand you pump inside the bucket. The small holes will stop the gunk from clogging the pump up but sill allow the water to enter.

For the people saying the holes will get clogged, it does but then you simply run a brush or something around the bucket to clear it which is far quicker than clearing the intake on the pump every time! Anything that fits though the holes will go though the trash pump so you don't get the issue of the pump jamming up with debris. Used to use this method for draining my neighbours pond which was always really slimly in the bottom after winter.

I purchased a house that had been in foreclosure and a neighbor told me that the pool had all sorts of algae in it.The pool had already been cleaned when I bought it.The pool guy said he would fix the problem with the recurring algae growth. The algae gets into the pourous cement and you can't get rid of it.It grows back, not alot but its always noticable. So after numerous chemicals have been tried and all of them have failed, the pool guy says drain the pool and use two coats of rubberized paint.I hope he is right this time, its been over ten years of failure.

We bought a house and the pool was horrendous, like a bog with frogs, lizards dead mice and birds etc. Kept cleaning it waiting for the pool company to sort our lining, pump etc. After well over a year it’s almost ready, they kept cancelling appointments or giving us excuses. This pool was a horror movie, well done, amazing work.
