I just found one of my waypoints after 10 months. It was in a wetland and I was going back to a property corner I staked last year, it was half buried in moss. I picked it up, brushed off the loose dirt, and it opened just as smooth as before, no corrosion, held an edge. Today was a good day.

I think what brings me back to Pete's reviews is the honesty and real use. He doesn't mind using this 300 dollar knife to cut up vegetables or open worm bags. He seems to always say what he thinks which is great, for as fun as BladeHQ and similar channels are, you know they can't sit there and say "yeah I thought the action on this sucked and the blade was thicker then Shikira's thighs and couldn't cut anything." Because then the company will get pissed at them, same with a lot of videos where the knife was supplied by the manufacturer. Pete is entertaining more then I think he gives himself credit for. He might have a very dry humor but I find myself smiling and giving a small laugh, which is more then what can be said for a lot of "here is the knife on the table, I am talking about the knife" channels.

I enjoy his videos for the same reasons. As someone who has a problem hoarding knives but also uses them regularly for work and around the house, I like the fact that they are tested in practical use as opposed to, this slices that printer paper like a mofo, or just speculating based on a visual inspection.

Great review Pete. Careful about composting dog & cat poop - should be fine for flowers & trees, but I wouldn't suggest adding it to a vege garden. Those black compost bins don't get hot enough to kill pathogens. Cat poop can be especially problematic - watch out for toxoplasmosis! I do compost my dog poop, but in a much bigger pile that gets really hot, and even then I only use it on trees, not veges. Sorry for the lecture - I hate being that guy! But I don't want you or your family getting ill!

G'day Ed, you beat me to it. To my knowledge; meat and poo from meat eaters is no good. Btw; I've found over the years driving and removing a stake into the core of the heap, thus providing an air hole, helps speed the process; several times is even better. Cheers Duke.

Glad to see the Vanax/blade geo held up well in the cut test! Awesome review, as usual. Cheers! P.S. I think they got some heat about being unclear on country of origin when these first came out. @@barkingspider2007 vanax can't reach 63-64 and if it was ht that hard somehow then it wasn't done properly and performance would decline. It's a very hard steel to ht, meaning it's finicky and needs to be done absolutely perfect to get the most out of it. 61 hrc is about where you want it to be and possibly 62 if someone knew a custom ht protocol from working with it alot. Overall 60-61 is a great ht from Peter's ht where these knifes are said to be done at. If you were to find a knife made in the states with all the same premium materials QC uses with a custom ht on vanax it would cost double to triple the price so I think they are providing a good knife if this is the type of knife you like.

@@chriswebb3018 Vanax can reach almost 62 before tempering. 61.5 ish If you have one at 62 after tempering the nitrogen is likely cook out and the corrosion performance is no longer there. Figured I’d chime in with my Quiet Carry story… or maybe nightmare is more appropriate. Bought a G10 Drift when they came out (liked the look and the Ti version doesn’t have lefty carry). I must’ve got a lemon because boy howdy out of the box it was awful. The head from one of the scale screws was broken off in the box, the backspacer rattled like crazy even though the screws were tight, and it was crazy off center. So I emailed them and they promptly emailed me back and told me I was lying and their machining was too good for the backspacer to rattle and just didn’t acknowledge the broken screw. So went back and forth and sent pictures as they told me I was fabricating my issues. After a whole lot of arm twisting they finally took the knife back… and charged me a restocking fee to boot. All that being said, I’ve come across two other people with the same sort experience with their customer service. If you get a good one out of the box they seem like great knives. If you get a bad one, prepare to deal with nightmarish customer “service”

Nice looking knife. I personally don't see any reason to buy a $300 knife. Unless that's your thing. To me I have many knives my favorite are in the $50-100 range. Another thing in my experience as a diesel mechanic. I find tools you use everyday don't rust. I'm more a user then collector my only knife that has rusted was a D2 kershaw. My many coldsteel knives have never rusted. An one of those is in my pocket always. My other observation 14c28n will hold its ground with any of these fancy steels. I've noticed the more knives I use and carry, I hate thin knives. I'm not talking bladestock thickness but I'm talking scale width and height. If it at least isn't at least ½” thick, ¾" tall (large chamfers and contouring are a big plus) and at least a 4" blade, I immediately lose interest in it because at that point for my hands you are sacrificing ergonomics for aesthetics. Like you said, you are trying to find a balancing point of compactness to fit more items in it's shared pocket against general usability and comfort. I was at that point until I realized I wouldn't have those same restrictions if I just moved the knife into a pocket of its own so now I just right-hand back pocket carry all my knives and it's one of the best things I've ever done.
@mmikee407

The problem is you would rarely find a knife with thick nice handles and thin slicey blades. It doesn’t work for tolerance so it’s not only about carrying the knife. Thin handles mean thin blade stock if you care for that, otherwise if thin blade stock isn’t a prerequisite so the entire knives world is yours 😂

Price and amount of cuts vs S90V from spyderco (like my sprint run carbon fiber Native Chief) i personally feel like my spyderco is "better". Being that it looks good, cuts extremely well especially while cooking, and literal every day carry. People think its massive but i have fairly large hands so it looks like a mid size folder in my hand. I get some knife prices because i have custom knives but sometimes a production that cost much less make me more happy. For instance my Tops Prather War Bowie is my absolute favorite outdoor knife but is far from being expensive in my eyes.

I have the same native chief, it’s amazing. For a linerless knife, carbon fiber is literally the perfect material (or laterally😉), the thin stabby spear point blade from S90v is everything you could ask for. Although I’d prefer k390 or Rex, it’ll look the same for its whole life. I’ll probably give it a regrind. I think this company makes its money off yuppie, apple laptop, type 20 somethings. It’s a cool package. I’m thinking about trying to make a line of rust proof knives to compete with these companies.

@@lindboknifeandtool A line of rust proof knives would be great. Just saw the Timascus pocket clip on your Chief and it looks awesome 👍 S90V was a new steel to me and felt like a new learning curve over Elmax, 204P, and M390. Trying to get a keen edge kept leaving a crazy burr that i couldn't get rid of. I ended up changing the apex and used much less pressure on a red then green DMT then used my .2 micron strop (im weird and free hand sharpen my knives). I've gotten use to sharpening S90V and it holds a fantastic edge but i do think it holds a better working edge when it isn't pollished.

@@r1w3d thanks man! Much appreciated! I also freehand and had the same experience. Stubborn burr. I try to get as small of a burr as I can on a coarse diamond plate, then remove the burr with edge trailing strokes on a fine diamond plate. A couple swipes with 10 micron diamond paste to finish. Definitely a different steel to sharpen. I just think the toughness being close to D2 at 60-62 hrc is crazy.

I believe they are comparable steels given that Pete said Vanax cut like M390. Since 20CV is an analog to M390, it’s roughly the same cutting ability. Of course, always depends upon the grind and blade geometry.

So I’ve gotten Vanax to rust by pairing it with titanium in salt water (galvanic corrosion). Is there a chance you can submerge the whole knife in salt water to see what corrodes first. Just asking in case you ever feel like it. Thank you.

The irony of using two completely stain-resistant materials to make a knife that corrode due to the other's proximity...

@@Naftoor What I'm saying is it would be really easy to avoid...if the manufacturer didn't use two stain resistant materials that have a poor reaction to each other under conditions that would rust a blade. Like, what's the point?

@@Naftoor Yeah, that's what I'm getting at. Look at the Spyderco Caribbean for a good example of how not to waste stain resistant materials.

I'll never buy a quiet carry again after the pos I got from them with the gen1 drift. Horrible horrible out of the box and poorly designed. China probably heat treats the microtech knives better than microtech can. Show knives for people who like to spend money on jewelry. Regardless the video was done exceptionally well.

Hi, can I ask you to test MKM mikro/makro m390 edge retention? I really like the knives, but I saw that the HRC is around 58/59, I’d like to know how “worse” it is as far as performance goes. It’d be really cool if you could do that since you are my go to guy as far as reliable source and knowledge goes. Thanks, wish you a good weekend!
