So i found the camera and it turns out that SuperGT wasn't lying, there is in fact footage of an asteroid hitting the race track and Steve overtaking 14 karts. It's hard to tell but the lap was pretty rapid for the world record attempt, maybe 6 seconds faster or something.....

Yeah 100 percent. Every 2kg over the weight in karting is worth a tenth. He's doing awesome considering he is running over the weight, and has only been racing the x30 for 2 months! 😎

If you are 8kg over the weight limit then on typical longish tracks ca. 50s then you'll be losing 0.4s when you are piloting an X30 or similar. In reality you only have to find 0.3s which is very little considering it was your first time at that track

For anyone who hasn’t driven an x30 or rotax - please appreciate how difficult it is to drive smoothly! It’s like having someone who is 50% stronger than you randomly yanking at the steering wheel round each corner whilst someone hits you in the ribs with a lump of wood. The top drivers make it look so easy - reality is much different!

When I am on the track (not driving) I always hear people talking about how practicing is the key to get fast. And if you allow me a tip, it's not just about learning the perfect line, but about overdriving and "underdriving" the Kart. Knowing how the Kart is going to react in any situation. This is how those guys can put clean inputs on their driving. They have done it all before and just by feeling the Kart under their butt they know exactly how much brake or steering is enough.

Advise from another ex pro kart racer. The way I was told to learn to gain those 0.1-0.2 sec in each corner, was trying to be as late as possible on brakes in corners where I was losing that time. Do it on training sessions, with the intention to really push it. It doesn't matter if you spin out, you have to find that limit and be comfortable with it. Also, try to use more track width, go more to the outside before corners and cut apex hard (look how much track Kayden uses), the more you travel in a straight line the better. That will allow you to do less steering which you also lose around 0.1 in each corner as you have to correct a lot. Like the other guy said, you need more time behind the wheel. I bet all top 3 guys were on a training for few days before competition. I was on a track always week before the race :D

Pretty good analyzation of what needs to be worked on. I can't speak on behalf of these X30 cars specifically, but in America (I think we use a style chassis, though I drove Birrel) it's important to have the kart as loose as possible without spinning out. You noticed how you are a lot more aggressive on the steering wheel and while yes that's true, you're specifically too aggressive with the wheel on entry. You want the back end to step out just enough from braking so you don't have to input any steering to make the entry, it allows you to gas it a little earlier on apex since your kart is rotated more towards the exit by the time you get to the apex (hopefully that makes sense). It's VERY VERY hard to nail those kind of karts though and kart time is so under rated. It looks easy, but its so hard to nail it every lap. You're doing an awesome job so far and seeing how critical and analytical you are, I'm sure you'll progress greatly as the year goes on and into next year.

Keep at it mate, your better than you think. X30’s aren’t as easy as it looks. I used to race hire kart clubs and was consistently in the top 5 drivers, thinking I was good I ended up buying a FA Alonso X30 expecting to be just as good. I quickly ended up coming back down to reality when I got absolutely destroyed by almost everyone on the track 🤦‍♂️. I never realised how hard it is and how there is so much more to it than just driving the kart. Setup in particular. Anyways good luck with it all and love your Chanel and humour 😂👍

If you want to reduce your weight, you can use a smaller fuel tank, carbon fibre floor tray and small brake disc if you haven't already. You could also ditch the mycrone for the race if you're brave enough and need the extra hundredth. It looks like the kart bounces too much going through the corners. Obviously a smoother driving style would likely sort this out, although you could try going lower in the pressures, add negative caster, or soften the rear set up to help the kart exit the corner. Saying this, I expect DHR would have helped in this department already. Highly recommend Terence Doves book on kart driving if you're interested. Love the series, looking forward to gyg.

Cool video with excellent perspective on how incredibly competitive karting is. It really comes down to athlete levels of fitness and strength to perform for even the 10 laps or so to control the kart how you want and know. Then getting into all the extra variables like center of gravity from bigger competitors not just weight and areo drag etc. Really difficult karting at top level so to be on there tails is a this level is epic

You finally explained to us why they are leaving you behind coming out of the tight corners (although you're definitely doing better). 8 kg is an insurmountable handicap. You will get closer, but you're never going to be up with the leaders. Would you mind explaining why this was not a problem in Club100? Do they have a higher minimum weight? I think there's something wrong with your current class if somebody with your build can't meet minimum weight.

Some things to do to get the kart lighter. Smaller radiator, lithium battery and cut down all bolts that can be shorter for example the bolt we can see on the camera on the seat :P
