Sailing Project Atticus

Sailing Project Atticus

Күн бұрын

Every morning as the sun rises I make some coffee, bring up the anchor, and get underway
The sea slowly drifts by. Coastlines blur from one shape to the next until our destination comes into view. Everyday a new anchorage, a new journey. I love being on the move. I love the continual sense of purpose that I feel and by the time one adventure ends the next one begins.
But traveling day in and day out in the remote corners of the world means that if problems with the boat arise, its much more difficult to figure out a solution. The Ionian Islands of Greece, where we’ve been exploring the past couple of weeks, are known for their giant cliffs, stunning scenery, and picturesque villages, but these villages, while beautiful, are not the easiest place to track down boat parts. And when the issue could be life threatening, we need to figure out a way to address the issue, no matter how inconvenient.

11:07...You might consider turning the fan around to suck the hot air out with a cool air in conduit on the alternator side. Either way, it would be more efficient with a direct hot air outlet.

So you’re pressurizing your engine compartment with air. Remember the air from the compartment must have a place for it to safely escape. Otherwise fumes will filter into anywhere there’s a crack, so most likely into the cabin. Fresh air is good for the engine but there needs to be air circulation.
@dominalexican

I agree. Most blower set ups I’ve seen pull hot air out. The colder air would naturally replace it in a negative pressure scenario
@mazdamaniac4643
@mazdamaniac4643 7 ай бұрын
I disagree. He's not pressurising anything, the other end of the blower hose is down by the bilge where it can suck in colder air from under the floor. Don't forget that with the engine running, it's drawing all of it's intake air from the engine compartment, through the air filter. Any fumes in the compartment are eventually going to be sucked through the engine, then exhausted out. Fresh air in the compartment is replaced through the bilge. With the engine on idle, the amount of air that Yanmar engine draws per rotation means that it's changing the air in there at around 27.5 cubic litres per second. Now you see why it's important to change your air filter at every service. In it's lifetime, it has to endure a hell of a lot of air going through it.

Its been record breakingly hot in Greece this year your getting cooked by the look of things .. Remember insulation works both ways, reflect heat away from the boat deck and draw air though the boat if you can in one direction.. Water evaporation in a moving air stream helps cool the air passing over the water or wet item .

@@hxhdfjifzirstc894 Thats one way ...more economical of water is to paint the roof with heat reflecting paint insulate the underside of the roof against conducted heat .. and have a rivulet system inside basicly a narrow channel or channels set in the floor running down a series of steps ..mini waterfalls/weirs starting in a small fountain an pool set into a wall at one end of the building. Collecting in a sump tank and being pumped back to the fountain again preferably by a solar power system. Low voltage waterproof lighting Makes for a visual treat at night and if the gaps a hazzard it can run under a pierced grating.. Though kids can play all day launching paper boats down the runnels and over the mini waterfalls.🧙‍♂️🇬🇧 If theres a sump or pond outside on a patio area it also can be sprayed in a small fountain that end.. Dont forget the various mosquito born diseases that are moving into new areas though. Moving water will deter most though.

Yes, with the ducting from the inflow vent to the fan to the alternator, then outflow will be passive out the other vent without ducting?

Or maybe better to reverse the fan, drawing heat away from the alternator, through the ducting, and out one of the vents, relying on passive inflow to the compartment through the other vent without ducting.

If your alternator is getting that hot, it's under full load constantly. If you provision an alternator rated for 25% more than the maximum draw you allow, it will be much happier and generate a lot less heat. My family sends lots of love your way, your videos always help us escape from the harsh reality of city life, if even for a short time. It's refreshing to see when we live in the middle of nowhere, Nebraska :)

Yes, I was thinking that also. Lithiums will suck everything the alt can provide and burn it up... on my Balmar I dropped output to 60% to counteract that and still had good charging performance...

The alternator running hot will shorten it's life even if it doesn't burst into flames. Hot air also adversely affects engine performance. Hot air is less dense and doesn't produce as much power as cold air. That's why turbocharged and blown engines have inter-coolers to cool the intake air temps. High temps will also shorten engine life. The cooler you can keep the engine compartment the better. I sail the coast of Alaska so high temps aren't normally a problem for me. 🙂 Thanks for the video. Sail On!

Jordan I saw an episode of Expedition Evens and they did an install of a high powered alternator and they two were having over heating. I find it funny that the stock alternator has a fan behind the pully but the high output ones don't. I'm no electrical wizard, so it is just an observation and maybe has no bearing on the heating problem. Glad to see you guys are doing so well....cheers

regarding the alternator setup, they way you have done it you seem to be recirculating the same air withing the engine space. It will be ok if you run the engine for an hour, but if you motor for 8 hours the engine room will eventually heat up. Normally engine spaces have a hose taking outside air into low in the bilge and another hose taking the air from above the engine to the outside. A blower should be installed on the hose going to the outside, so as not to increase the pressure in the engine space.

I had this problem before. Worry about a Bilge leak, causing that blower to suck water and throw it on the alternator, not good. Also the blower motors might be 6A draw but the surge current is like 20, my 10a fuse blew after several starts. I changed it to a 25a. Also, a balmar 614 has a temperature sensor input and can degrade the alternator output as the alternator heats up, a valuable safety when if it’s too hot. I had a 360a alternator on a jeanneau 439 so similar small engine box.

Hi. If I may make a suggestion. You take air from the bottom of the hull which is quite warn in the waters you are navigating in and you push the hot air from around the alternator in the boat. Why don’t you reverse the blower and pull the air from above the altermator to the outside. You probably have an air intake for the engine compartment through which you can use to evacuate the hot air. It seems to me that it is going to be a little bit cooler in the boat this way. Michel

If you have Lithium Batteries, you need to have a DC/DC charger such as a REDARC set between your lead acid starting battery and your house battery--the charger charges the Lithium batteries without overloading your alternator. Always limit your charging current to a max of fifty amperes or you will overload your alternator. Set your alternator to charge your starting battery, and run the DC/DC charger from there--and your alternator will handle it fine. I also have a VSR--voltage sensitive relay, between the lead acid starting battery and the DC to DC charger. When the alternator stops charging, this relay opens and cuts off the house battery charger from the start battery. This stops the house batteries flattening your starting battery.
