What I find peculiar is the spirit in the Morne jail cage. He is afraid he will be eaten by the "hideous mongrels". Firstly, does that mean that Edgar was feeding people to the Misbegotten? Why else would he fear being eaten? The man is of "noble blood", yet he is imprisoned. When we arrive at the castle the Rebellion is still ongoing, yet this man presumably died in the cage, which makes me think he was already imprisoned before the rebellion started. On the other hand could it be that Edgar was a cannibal and he had supplanted the nobleman who previously ruled over Morne? Edgar states that he was appointed by Godrick, and there are raw dumplings in the kitchen of Stormveil Castle. Godrick would not appoint someone benevolent. Maybe Edgar has a taste for raw dumplings because it is served at Stormveil. Cannibalism is not the wost thing happening at Stormveil. Stray thoughts: The Ailing Village and the zombie poison pool seems to indicate to me that Morne was a terrible place to live even before the Misbegotten Rebellion.

Two details that reinforce this: *There is a maddened village not far from Castle Morne.* This is undoubtedly meant to reinforce the idea that Shabriri has been active in the area. And more importantly... *Shabriri feeding off those in grief is a pattern.* Look at Yura-Eleonora, the Nomadic Merchants, and Vyke and his maiden. Yura very clearly cares for Eleonora in some way, and when his grief and struggles culminate in a loss, SOMEHOW Shabriri emerges with control of his body, much like how Irina's body appears as Hyetta. (it's confirmed btw: data miners have confirmed Irina and Hyetta share identical character models, and iirc Irina dies before Hyetta ever appears) The Nomadic Merchants were likewise falsely accused of crimes they didn't commit (by Shabriri, iirc) and this causes them to call on the Frenzied Flame in their anger and grief. Vyke's storyline is probably actually the MOST telling of this. As a timeline rundown: 1) Vyke encounters Shabriri at the Mountaintop much like we do. 2) Unlike Melina, his maiden is scared and uncertain. 3) Vyke, being a good person, travels below the capitol to stand before the Three Fingers as a means of rescuing his maiden from self-sacrifice 4) Vyke's *armor* is burnt. This is important, especially given the fingerprint patterns align in such a way that suggest he was grabbed from behind, as if he tried to run. 5) We encounter a maddened Vyke not far from his maiden's corpse in a Frenzied town. He drops his own Shabriri grape, AKA one of his eyes 6) The next time we encounter Vyke, he is...sound of mind? He is locked away in a gaol at the ends of the earth, that almost nobody would ever have access to, YEARS after any governing body has dissolved. It is my belief that the Three Fingers attempted to possess him, but this *failed.* It failed because his armor was still on. The main argument for this being the case is that the Three Fingers are INSISTENT we take off our armor before they will touch us, as if to express concern the procedure won't work otherwise. Why behave this way unless they have confirmation of these fears via Vyke...? I also believe Vyke did not kill his maiden in a maddened state, but rather his maiden was killed by Frenzied Flame followers in an effort to INDUCE madness in Vyke. Remember: grief as a connecting element between Vyke, Yura and Edgar makes perfect sense. So if Vyke is an unwilling vessel for the Frenzied Flame, what better way to madden him than to induce grief? Kill the very maiden he was trying to help and that he so cared about. This even kills two birds with one stone: Vyke can no longer ascend without the aid of the Frenzied Flame, and it maddens him. So why do we encounter him sound-of-mind in his gaol...? Well, we witnessed it: because either he or we cut out his eye. Vyke felt himself succumbing and took out the eye that had been burnt by the Frenzied Flame. This enabled him to resist enough that he was sound of mind. It's my belief Vyke then imprisoned *HIMSELF.* He is imprisoned in a gaol where only one of two possibilities are viable: Vyke imprisoned himself, or he failed to defeat that last stand by the Flame Guardians. The Flame Guardian option just feels so....anti-climactic? This dude had TWO Great Runes, and he loses to THEM?? It feels odd. More importantly, if we go with the theory Vyke he lost to the Flame Guardians, this suggests Vyke *remained* possessed by the Frenzied Flame all the way to the end. This undermines the idea that the Three Fingers need us naked to possess us; if Vyke was truly maddened all the way to the Flame Guardians, then they could grab us against our will too, couldn't they? For all we know, the gaol being in what seems to be another dimension might help him resist the call of the Frenzied Flame. Or perhaps, the Frenzied Flame simply gave up when they realized Vyke imprisoned himself and had little hope of escaping, and Vyke simultaneously didn't want to escape because the risk was too great. Either way, it makes sense of the Three Fingers' behavior to assume that Vyke is very willingly locking himself off, in order to avoid a risk that he takes the throne for the Frenzied Flame. All this means that we absolutely have a pattern of grief being a driving force that for whatever reason, Shabriri has some level of power over. The moment someone is suffering from grief, the Frenzied Flame comes knocking. Hyetta "confirms" this as well by saying usually the people who give her grapes sound frail or scared, trembling and "howling wordlessly," which matches Irina alluding to "howling." So yes, you're probably onto something about Shabriri pulling the strings behind the Castle Morne. It matches in terms of vocabulary and theming with the other stories involving Shabriri.
@amber43057 ай бұрын
Could it be that hyetta burns after we receive our blessing from the three fingers in an attempt to bring grief to us the player and make us mad. Because she says she will take the role as our maiden and then she's dead again.

Frenzy being the source of the Morne rebellion is a really interesting and very plausible idea. To add to it, the Weeping Peninsula and Castle Morne seem to have a unique connection to the Flame of Frenzy as well. The Morne Moangrave, which serves as the boss arena for the Leonine Misbegotten, seems to be where the Fingerprint Stone Shield originally came from. The Moangrave appears to have the same fingerprint design that is on the shield and the shield appears to be roughly the same size as the hole in the grave. The grave also appears to be surrounded by dead merchants similar to the path to the three fingers, where the shield is found. If this is true, the shields description holds some interesting insight: "Part of the tomb of an ancient god, the Readerless Fingers relayed their message through these imprints, said to be the very seeds from which frenzy first sprouted." This means the Moangrave is the tomb of a dead god related to the Frenzy Flame, the Moangrave was written on by the three fingers themselves, and the Weeping Peninsula/Castle Morne's backyard is the origin of frenzy as a whole. With this in mind, it may even be possible that one of the misbegotten managed to transcribe some of the fragmented messages left by the three fingers and picked up their "everything must burn" ideology. This could also explain why Irina was chosen to be the maiden of the three fingers and why Edgar fell to madness so easily. Who knows how conscious the thing in the tomb is or what effect it may have on people who spend their whole life next to it. Additionally, the Ailing Village is also just outside the castle ramparts. It was likely founded/corrupted due to the proximity of the source of the frenzy flame. Although, it is possible that a misbegotten found their way into the village and was introduced to the Flame of Frenzy that way. This theory is a lot more reasonable, but also way less cool than the Moangrave is the tomb of a god and drove everyone in Morne mad.

The catch on the Howling is so spot on that I think you have to be correct! One of the most important items in the game is Law of Causality - "All things are linked in a chain of relations". Why this is important is because it tells us as an audience that the events that happen in our story are all directly linked to each other in causal chain, and we know that many of our character are aware of this fact. If we think about Shabriri, he is somehow able to transfer his consciousness into others even after his own death, and this means that his age in unknowable. How many people has he driven to madness, how many rebellions has he orchestrated, how many times has he convinced Oedipus to kill his own father? Put these two pieces together you have a character who potentially knows that how to manipulate the chain of events and has done it many many many times. Excellent video!

I think this makes a LOT of sense, especially since the nearest village is heavily affected by the Frenzied Flame. My best theory about the cannibalism is that the Frenzied Flame seems to be somehow related to burning or melting away all all disparity or differences in the Lands Between. Maybe a side effect of that is people lose their ability to discern values, which would explain why Edgar looses sight of his sense of vengeance, and stops caring about the origin of his meats.

@user-if4nx2jn8r7 ай бұрын
I think you make good points, though I would personally say Edgar sort of was driven mad by what happened with his daughter, he went from specifically hating the Misbegotten who killed her to just indiscriminate violence, which is usually how the Frenzied Flame seems to work. Most people who become enthralled by it, from the Merchants to characters like Vyke, started off with a specific reason for following it but then get seduced by the wanton destruction that it represents. Even Shabriri may have followed that process.

I never even considered what could have started the rebellion, but now I have reason to suspect considering there's that village just a stone's throw from Castle Morne that is afflicted with frenzy, like, burning people on a pyre level frenzied and the church there literally has the Flame of Frenzy incantation... which mirrors what the misbegotten have done in the courtyard of Castle Morne with the big ass pyre. There's even a vantage point in the castle, the past where you realize- OH the uprising is ACTIVELY happening- where two misbegotten are ganging up on one of the soldiers on the cliff side that you could see the village from. I was on the fence because I feel like if there'd been more involved with the frenzied flame it would have appeared more in the actual zone via enemies or items, but now that I think about it more the more i think it makes sense. Because Irina being a blind maiden likely put her in the unique position to be a finger maiden for the three fingers, which is the culmination of Hyetta's questline essentially. The theme of Castle Morne and Edgar seems to be revenge: the grafted blade greatsword is a "revengers' weapon" a legendary weapon in the hands of the leonine misbegotten. I feel like if Shabriri were involved it was to push this cycle of revenge. The mistreated misbegotten get their hands on a weapon like that and feel emboldened to finally get revenge on the people that have been putting them down for so long... it seems like the areas around the Leonine are the most calmed and cleaned out areas which might mean that the rebellion started there and spilled out into the main castle. This area is also where the cowering misbegotten are. But anyways- this uprising spurns Edgar to save his daughter and whisk her away. Conveniently despite her guards dying she isn't killed until we free the Castle and Edgar can get away, just in time to see his daughter is dead and in turn making him seek revenge on those that killed her, which drives him to the frenzy flame. So it could be the events in Morne were nudged to get a finger reader for the three fingers, and essentially a pawn to farm Shabriri grapes to feed and further Hyette/Irina to finish her quest?? I have to wonder if Irina even truly died and it was just a look-alike while some weird mind-wipe stuff happened leading to Hyetta. I mean Hyetta already KNOWS the grapes help, so it's likely she's already had some via Edgar.... I don't know where I'm going with this. It's all very off the cuff as I decided to go through the zone and read item descriptions after watching this video. edit: when you give Hyetta the second shabriri grape she mentions the other people who give her grapes "howling" so yeah. I don't think the mention of the howl by Irina too much of a stretch now.

The more I think about it, the more I think it's the other way around. Someone mentioned in a comment that maybe the Misbegotten rebelled because of the spread of frenzy within their human masters. It's Irina/Hyetta and Edgar that became frienzied, not them. In fact, we never see any Misbegotten being affected by frienzy, even the incantation's descriptions explains only Tarnished are affected by the status buildup. 🤔 So could the Misbegotten be the heroes, saving themselves and all life in the Lands between from annihilation? Or are they just indirect pawns in the Three Fingers' master plan? 🤔🤔

I wouldn't go so far as to say that Shabriri is playing 4-D level chess and caused the rebellion at Castle Morne. I think Shabriri simply takes advantage of people who are at their breaking point. If you follow Yura's questline, by the end of his storyline he dies a broken man because Eleonora couldn't be saved from her bloodlust. The historic Tarnished, Vyke, gets afflicted with the Flame of Frenzy because he is so unwilling to sacrifice his Finger Maiden to burn the Erdtree. Through Yura, he tries desperately to persuade us to "save our finger maiden," and by that point, mechanically we're at the point of the game where we're at the most difficult, so he's hoping that our player character is at their breaking point. It's such a deep story both from the writing perspective, as well as from a mechanical perspective. All of this is to say, I appreciate your video, it's always fun to see peoples' different perspectives on the same story!!!!

I'll never forget the shivers down my spine when I've met Irina's Corpse calling herself Hyetta; Amazing catch on the Howling to conect with Shabriri, I've been hunting his ghost in limbgrave for the past year in game to see If he had something todo with it. The only thing that I have no clue about is Why he took Yura's body; I get that Shabriri is following us and that he probably takes our corpse from the Giant's Caldron to make his ending happens, but Why Yura if he could take anyone's body? I get that Game Design is a thing and stuff, but still
@joels51507 ай бұрын
I’ve assumed the bodies at the Revenger Shack had been killed by the Misbegotten in the area, who were in turn killed by Edgar 🤷♀️ It’s tricky to figure out timelines within the current storyline, since there’s nothing explicit about any passage of time between when you encounter characters in one location between the next time you see them. So we can’t know how long the bodies in the shack had been rotting compared to how long ago Edgar arrived there.

It all really goes back to the law of causality, maybe shabriri was much more than a crazy and evil man, he clearly is extremelly smart and very manipulative, maybe he is closer to a lord or a god not unlike Marika and Radagon, as he clearly uses the universal laws too to his advantage, and the law of regression could also aplly to the frenzy, as with the erdtree all things should go back from where they came from, and so does the flame of frenzy.
@daD3ATHBR1NG3R7 ай бұрын
The Frenzied Flame is sooo fun to unpack. I’m blanking on the video I saw, but it sorta redefined the Frenzy Flame conceptually as “being defiant towards/going mad from the sheer injustice of the world”. It sounds complicated, but the vid talked about how there really isn’t TRUE justice in how life actually works in the grand scheme of things, and made the dark but true example that for every kid that’s ever been killed or worse, do they the kid, get to experience any form of “justice” themselves, firsthand, for the harm and horror being inflicted on them? The short answer? No. No, their experience is awful, painful, and a terrible way to go out. People suffer horrible fates they don’t deserve. The world is unjust. Now expand that idea to mass tragedies. In-game, the tragedy with the traveling merchants is also about a completely unjust discrimination that could be likened to what Jewish people experienced during the holocaust. Both mass tragedies that caused innumerable deaths and immeasurable suffering. And why? Rampant, unjust, unnecessary ignorance and discrimination. Let’s face it, the world isn’t perfect. But that’s the whole point of the Frenzied flame quests; Irina is an innocent blind woman who is needlessly murdered. The Misbegotten are all a race of beings that are subjected to a life of slavery just due to birth defects. The Misbegotten at Castle Morne? They rebelled, justly. And what came of it? More injustice. Irina’s father only sought to fulfill his duty when he stayed to defend the castle, but how “did fate reward him”? Irina dies. …But then comes back to life… …But something is off… Things begin to spiral in her questline. We find corpses of people going so crazy with chaos that they literally pull out their own eyes. What do we do? Oh we just FEED THEM to the reanimated blind girl. Yura dies in an unrelated fight. His corpse gets possessed!!! But what does Shabriri offer? “Justice”. “Oh you don’t want to burn Melina, so just offer yourself instead!” Even when Melina begs you to reconsider multiple times, it’s not enough. She tells you that the world, even with all its imperfections, is still beautiful. There is still life, there are still births. But you burn it all. The whole fucking world. Literally. But it’s not even you. Your head exploded. You even saw it. And then outer god of chaos/Frenzy Flame/ Shabriri comes in and possesses you! You were used! The point is that the mindset of the outer god of Chaos can be seen in the background story of Shabriri himself. He told a lie about the merchants, just so he could cause as much suffering as possible. He gets his eyes gouged out as punishment when it’s realized that he lied. And he smiles. Shabriri, the Frenzy Flame, whatever “it” is. It’s like the devil. It tempts with lies. It urges you to be hateful. To be hurtful. To harm. To give into that… madness It’s to be like Hitler or the original version of Shabriri. To lie and manipulate knowing it will kill thousands of innocent people. It’s to be like Edgar in his blind cannibalistic rage, Ted Kaczynszki in his cold calculated one, or Ted Bundy in his psychotic combination of both. To kill in the name of rage, revenge, hatred, insanity... or thrill. And then to spiral even further. Edgar wasn’t the only one. Remember the frenzied soldiers on Mt. Gelmir? Went so mad on the front lines that they too turned to cannibalism. The merchants summoning the 3 fingers BECAUSE they were wrongly accused. Their eyes all burn with the SAME yellow flame. Irina being born blind, dying a terrible death, then being reanimated and possessed so she can eat eyes and profess the gospel of the three fingers until she literally MELTS. Fuck man. This world IS chaos. This life IS unfair. So… do you accept it? Still live it to its fullest? Or reject it? Make your choice, but know, the greatest trick the Devil ever played was convincing the world that he did not exist. And if God made us in his image, maybe that’s why life is imperfect. And maybe God is imperfect too.

This is a brilliant theory, and one that i think really closes the loop on what i thought were two separate, but loosely related plots! The whole howl connection really brings meaning and context to what i also initially thought was a one off side quest, but honestly ties so neatly with hyetta, irina, and yura: why yura was so close to the weeping peninsula to begin with, why the castle morne rebellion took place, it fleshes out and presents a plausible theory as to why edgar fell to madness, and also how shabriri manipulated things so that the lord of frenzied flames could even be possible! Bravo, well done! Now to tie it in to the Melina=gloam-eyed queen...(kidding 😅)

You've has the clip at 6:50 of Edgar saying "Foul creatures as it's said. And true enough they are foul inside and out." What if he actually meant their insides? And now that he is frenzied he murders everyone and is literally checking their inside to see if they are also "foul" on their insides? It is just a small thing but hearing him say that was my immediate reaction to him suddenly carrying around the insides of people.

I don't know if someone already commented on this. But there is a strange connection between hyetta and irina. It seems they are the same person and the corpse left for edgar to find is a look-a-like to drive him mad. even found the old video explaining this with the varre questline (you can kill hyetta or irina for the maiden blood but not irinas corpse.) also the sword being placed next to her seems like its all staged. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqmse2ltiaqYsK8si=klBtyXAIugw1PIJ6 this goes really well with your "frenzied flame coup" theory.

Makes perfect sense to me. Considering that frenzied soldiers are found cannibalizing their fallen in a mournful trance. If Edgar was afflicted by Shabriri’s madness, he might have begun eating his falling men to meld their spirits and his. And the blending of his love and hate could have lead him to bring back his daughter through some grim ritual.

The way the Misbegotten attack with cleaver-like weapons, squishing against the dead, definitely suggests a certain butchery. And maybe Edgar was affected by having that all around. And maybe "cannibalism" doesn't mean as much in a world where species lines are blurred: everyone shared the same origin from the same Crucible, everyone shares the same rebirth through the same Erdtree, everyone has the potential for horns or wings or tails...

However, I have a theory the Lands Between are a space between life and death. We know the tarnished are sent there when they die in the “real world”. I think the shadow realm in the DLC is the proper destination for those who die, but Marika twisted the rules to keep people stuck in the lands between permanently…
