This wipe when doing this quest, I spawned the exact same place as you did. After stashing my roller and sv98, my buddy was killed by a 3 man. I wiped the 3 man and to avenge him, I didn't go for the flash drive. Instead I carried all their gear out, not a single thing left.

I allways assumed the worst pain meant a longer cool down so less gains

Pretty sure it gives some sort of debuff, so I also just go for mild. Just seems like the best bang for buck you know.

They most likely saw you! They were seperated! One was in the hill above dorms! And the other in the fortress! And they just haunted ypu down! In the end you stayed idle for too long! Allowing them to make a sandwich out of you! You should either relocate! Or push one of them to force two 1v1 fights! Also always pk when you realize a fight is inevitable! Ggs!
