I’m imagining dk64 where all golden bananas are a check, all fairies, all dirt patches, and maybe each small banana is a check or maybe every 5 small bananas is a check, so you pop a balloon, you get 2 checks

It’s a bit (a lot) complicated to set up, but it can definitely be pretty fun! Unfortunately with some games it can turn into a slog. Like, if someone else is playing a game with an absurd number of checks, chances are your own important item(s) will be totally locked away somewhere no one’s thought of.

It really boggles my mind the level of mastery we have over these older games now. If you had told someone when these games were five or even ten years old that they could play a version where they could pick up items from Mario in pokemon it would have been one of those crazy schoolyard rumors. And now it’s real and actually functions well. That’s kind of insane when you think about it.

People are crazy, for sure. Back in the day of these games, mods/romhacks/randomizers would've been witchcraft, but now we can just do it. And it's not even just old games, Slay The Spire, Rogue Legacy, Hollow Knight, Risk of Rain 2, so many recent games are supported. Genuinely, I think Archipelago is an incredible step in the right direction for gamers wanting to rekindle sparks with games.

I remember I played this sort of randomizer a couple days ago with some friends; unfortunately I gave up because we forgot to turn off "Hard advancements" for Minecraft - apparently those are separate from "Grindy advancements" which include HDWGH and every biome, but long story short, even amongst the 1000+ checks between Doom and Kingdom Hearts, my blaze powder recipe was locked behind Two By Two, the advancement for breeding every animal... I couldn't bring myself to do all that nonsense at 1 in the morning.

this actually isn't a very new thing. I remember seeing one for link to the past and super metroid quite a while back. Archipelago, which is the randomizer used in this vid, has support for a pretty decent library of games.

Almost 50 *and growing!* Archipelago is an open system, so one could make a mod that integrate its system into a randomizer relatively easily.

Pokemon Crystal was technically the first one worked on but the dev had something come up and Pokemon Red/Blue for added first with Emerald on the role for the next version of AP.

My original plan was to work on developing an original gen 2 randomizer for AP after I finished doing sofor Red and Blue. However, another developer expressed an interest in porting the Pokémon Crystal Key Item Randomizer, so I instead focused on adding more features to Red and Blue. The PCKIR port has not yet materialized, and by this point I most likely would have gotten it done if I'd started after getting Red and Blue done, however we would be missing a lot of great features for Red and Blue.

This is awesome! When I saw your video, I immediately installed this myself and right in the moment I'm also playing a SM64 + Minecraft Randomizer. Huge advantage I see with this is that before, I always wanted friends to join me in my randomizer shenanigans, but often, you need extensive knowledge of a game to play a randomizer and rarely you find a group of friends sharing this passion for one certain game. With Archipelago, everybody can just select their favourite game out of the supported ones and we can play together anyway. I love this, and thank you for sharing it :D

EDIT 56:56 sounds pretty fair to remove the fullblown casino mode that could ensue, which adds frustration and removes content value since it's just completely rng. I would argue if you get a hint to something you can't get but isn't like an HM or a Key in Sm64, you could then use a hint for the prerequisite.

This challenge seems like it would be fun to do with almost every pokemon game at the same time, however, I am going to make this one suggestion: make the randomiser be for a specific console in the randomiser, so for example, run all mainline GBA pokemon games or all mainline NDS pokemon games.

Okay, theres actually this REALLY bad glitch in pokemon red, if you evolve your starter or (somehow) catch another pokemon and register them in a (nonexistent) dex, and you haven't delivered the parcel, you will SOFTLOCK because he will evaluate your pokedex, but won't let you actually begin your journey, as you won't get your pokedex for real, and the old man in veridian city will never move

Pokemon Emerald isn't available on Archipelago, it's only Red & Blue. Unless you plan on making a mod for Emerald for Archipelago? Which would be cool.

It's in beta, about as close to being finished as possible, just needs to go through the approval process. Publishing and playing betas is pretty simple in Archipelago nowadays luckily :)

I don’t recommend trying to use games not officially supported because the officially supported games have all been set up in a way where it’s impossible to get softlocked. If you use an unsupported game like emerald you could end up softlocked and for an 8+ hour randomiser it’s not worth it

Tbh in my opinion that's part of the beauty! Archipelago literally has Adventure (an Atari 2600 game) being able to play together with Starcraft II. Doom + Stardew Valley. The Witness + Super Mario World. Ocarina of Time + Rogue Legacy. Etc etc

I don't see Emerald listed among the supported games on archipelago. Also, I think it would be great to see two or three people doing this, but I think that each person should have two games so that if they get locked in one they can work on the other. (Although it sounds pretty intimidating trying to keep track of six games if you have three people with two games each, but would still be really cool.)

there are things like sudoku and i think minesweeper that you can connect to the multiworld for hints and stuff while others are doing stuff

2 games per person would be worse because you wouldn’t know where the block was coming from. If every player has 1 game and you get stuck you know it can only be 1 of the other 2 games. If 2 players are stuck then you know exactly which game is causing the block. This allows all 3 players to be on a call and remind each other/keep everyone updated on if they’re blocked or not If it’s two games per player and you get stuck the block could be any of 5 games
