Big fan of these universal openings for black and white, they are really great fallback options for when the stander repertoire starts to fail or gets stale.

Igor, I’ve been a fan of your videos for a year or two now. Last night I watched this Van Geet opening video before playing my weekly game against my nephew and regular opponent who usually wins (score to date 100 wins to him, 43 to me). After 40 minutes and 14 moves he resigned. It worked out just the way you predicted. Thank you. You’re a star.

At 4:57 I think the best is Nh5 having checkmate to g7 with the Queen, or if black defends with Qg8, then Nf6+ and after Kh8, NxQg8 black loses the Queen. In the variant you showed, Bxh6, after black Qg8, white doesn’t have the checkmate, because the g8 field is defended also by the black on Ne7, so just exchange of Queens and minor pieces. PS. This wouldn’t work if black have moved the King to h8 instead of h7, after Qxf7.

Yoo GM Igor! 👋 Your videos are thorough! You do a great job explaining.🍻🙌 I’m a newbie to chess and trying to take on a lot at the moment, if you had to choose out of 2 or 3 openings each for white and black what would be your recommended ones to master? I’ve wrote a list of the best ones I’ve found through watching your vids 🤙 i would like to focus on 4 while I’m learning. What do you think from this list? Thanks again Igor, I look forward to your reply. White -Van Geet (Dunst)/Reversed Nimzoswitsch -Bishops Opening -Kings Indian Setup -London System or Colle Zukertort -English Opening -Italian Game/Fried Liver Attack -Vienna Opening -Ruy Lopez Black -Nimzoswitsch Defence -Kings Indian Setup combined Pirc Defence -French Defence -Caro Kann Defence -Scandinavian Defence -Sicilian Defence Kind regards, elKarso

"That covers the move d5." No, it really doesn't. When Igor mentions that that "most of the time," Black plays c5 on move 4, that is only 29% of the time, yet he doesn't cover any of the other moves, including Nc6, which is the correct move according to Stockfish and the 2nd most common at 25%, nearly equal to c5. After Nc6, White plays the same Nf3 as in the video, and Black responds with h5, preparing to march his pawns on the king side and attack the knights. White will usually reply with h4, which is the move Stockfish recommends, and Black's best move Nge7. At this point, Stockfish shows Black with a significant advantage (-0.6), and the Lichess database shows Black winning 72% of the time to White's 24%. That is a common problem with videos of this type. They only show you how to win against an opponent who doesn't know how to play the opening, and they don't show you the best moves against someone who does.
@tobias44118 ай бұрын
I disagree, why should white play the same moves as presented in video IF black plays 4...Nc6 instead of c5?? You are correct that Nc6 (best move) is the second most played for black, but as you know in chess you have to adapt after the moves that opponent plays and make adjustments. So 5.Bc4 is the way to go if 4...Nc6 comes. Then follows: ...5...Nf6 (Most common move, 49%) 6.Nf3 Bd6 7.c3 0-0 8.b4 a6 9.0-0 and white is totally fine here. No problems at all. Note even if white played like in the example the move h5 for black is very uncommon since only 3% played it according to database....
@eclecticexplorer78287 ай бұрын
@@tobias4411 It seems that you misunderstood me. I did not at all mean to suggest that one player should not adapt their moves to what the other does. While I agree that 5.Bc4 is the better move, what I was saying was that in the Lichess database, 5.Nf3 is White's most common move in the situation (46%, compared to 30% for Bc4). As this was meant to show the opening from White's perspective, I will agree that playing the best move for White instead of the most common would have been the correct way to go. My main point, however, was that Igor did not cover 4...Nc6 at all in the video, and I think that it should have been covered. BTW, I could have mentioned a few other positions where he mentioned the top move by Black when there exists a far better alternative that is played nearly as often. For example, after 1. Nc3 d5 2. e4 d4 3. Nce2 e5 4. Ng3 c5 5. Nf3 Nc6 6. Bc4 Be6 7. d3, Igor mentions 7... Nge7, which he points out correctly is a big mistake. However, he doesn't go into 7... Nf6, which is only 1% less common and avoids the problems of Qh5 a couple of moves later. Stockfish shows the situation as even.

In addition to your points the most popular move at 3.50 on 7. for black on the database is not Ne7 but Nc6 by quite a distance & this makes a huge difference also.
@waynewoodger38202 ай бұрын
In addition The best & by far most popular response to Qxf7 is not Kh7 but Kh8 & once again this makes a huge difference to the Eval

I don't really wanna face this as Black. Can you do a video about playing against the Nc3 opening?
@zweigooglenutzer60985 ай бұрын
Nice, in a practical way it probably me means you can often transpose into a vienna (which is my main opening) without having to risk facing the sicilian in exchange for studying the reversed nimzowitch line which Inalready play with black. So basically an improved way for my opening game
@brucelittleboy35948 ай бұрын
There are transpositional issues to consider after 1 Nc3 d5 2 e4 de4 3 Ne4 Black chooses the opening here: ...e6 is a French; ...c6 is a Caro Kann. White is locked in to Nc3 main lines against these popular defences. One might as well play 1. e4.

Thanks for this vid. I am a noob and very curius why the opponent never punishes bishop to G5 with pawn to H6 in any of the example positions?
@davidmasse2829Ай бұрын
I’ve played this over 100 games now. Most defend with d5. In that line, very few play c5 at all against me at 1600-1700 levels. Nevertheless it has been an effective and unique opening that I’ve had some success with. And when they respond with e5 I always feel good about the opening.
@danmano478Ай бұрын
What are you talking about? He showed exactly the variant 2. … d5, not 2. … c5.

@@danmano478 In this examples on the d5 line, black also plays c5. But in actual games it's very uncommon anyone plays that.

Unless I overlooked it, in the line: Nc3 d5 e4 d4 Nce2 e5 Ng3... black can constrict white's light square bishop with Be6 and a6, thus after Ng3, Be6 c3 a6!, but instead you only gave c5.
@danmano478Ай бұрын
He moved the King’s bishop to c4 not c5, so a6 doesn’t matter, if you don’t follow up with b5, in which case you don’t develop pieces, just move pawns and if white brake the advanced black’s pawn chain, black remains without his underwear. Could be interesting to analyze this variant though.
@davidmasse28298 ай бұрын
I’ve tried this opening about 50 times now and I am getting more e5 and d5 moves. I do see a lot of c6 and Nc6. Any recommendation for those? This is a useful opening and having already been a Vienna player, I like Nc3 for that reason as well. Good video, very practical.

1. D5 is the computers favorite line in response to nc3, to avoid the kingside attack out of the opening the computer usually puts the light square bishop out to e6 asap Take this line as the general idea of black; 1. nc3, d5 2. e4, d4 3. Ne2, e5 4. Ng3, be6.

Sorry Igor but this is not one of your best & has holes throughout the video. at 6m 13s you chose the 5th most popular move for black moving the winning chances to 82% instead of the most popular =37% next =37% next 42% etc There is no point in showing how the opening works vs improbable replies. This is a very poor example in comparison to your videos on the Nimzowitsch Defense which is very strong.
