One of the major aspects of BabyMetal that I absolutely adored was that they did not sexualise the girls at all. Their costumes are not provocative, the dance moves are not gyrating around the stage and their songs do not relate to anything sexualised at all. Clearly this fool thinks that metal should be the traditional Western version but to me, metal is about pushing the envelope and breaking the rules, which is exactly what BabyMetal does. To me, I love BM for their positivity, clean vocals and the joy they bring their audience, as evidenced by the miles of smiles I saw at their recent concerts. Furthermore, the Babymetal fans at their Melbourne concert was an enormous demographic. I saw primary school aged kids with their grandparents at this concert, along with everything in between. Everyone was there for the spectacular performance and show, not to ogle the girls I think it reflects more on this guy that he can’t look at young females without thinking it’s predatory. I’m going to wear my BM T-shirts with even more pride.

About the Idol thing in general, Idols are known to be very polite, happy, and engaging girls. That is going to attract the attention of most people. I ran into the same thing in the early days of supporting The Warning band. (3 sister rock band from Mexico). The youngest of them just turned 18 last year, but I've been helping fund them since 2017 or so. A few people started up with the 'Ohh, so you like little girls that play music, huh?' and I just gutted their intentions right on the spot.😒 I supported them, because I wanted to see them succeed, not because I had some fetish about them. All 3 are insanely talented, and they now have 3 full albums out, plus assorted singles, and EP's. I have seen someone (from looking at the name probably a Japanese woman, it was also in broken English) commenting under a top-10 Japanese female drummer list that Yoyoka was the only one deserving on that list and that all the others were on there was because of how they looked/dressed. So I guess that's the other side of that coin. The funny thing is that Senri Kawaguchi and Kanade Sato were on that list and both of them were child prodigy's (just like Yoyoka) and had a following long before they were at adult age. I was really hoping you guys would address this as soon as I saw the original in my feed. As an adult survivor of CSA and R, one of the biggest appeals of Babymetal to me is how safe I feel, both with the music AND the community. When I come on to watch reaction videos from my favorite reactors, I'm also expecting a regular crew of commenters and it's such a dedicated and genuinely safe feeling group of people (thanks to fellow commenters/BM fans for being amazing). Does this guy get off to all his favorite bands? Does he have a stained Metallica poster in his room? Does he think all people sexualize their favorite artists? Does he think the people who are reacting to BM with their kids are grooming them? I guess I'm a lesbian now (in addition to P-O) since I listen to a lot of female-fronted bands? In all the time I've been listening to BM and reading comments, reviews or watching reaction videos, I've never once heard any sexual terms being used about them. Sure people say how beautiful or cute the girls are, but it's only ever done in a respectful, genuine way. Then years later I discovered they did last and that's what has impressed me more than anything. I'm so impressed by how Su navigated the "child star" problem so well, and how they had to sort of gimmick around her developing voice early on, to now where she's basically the best at what she does.

I became a Babymetal fan because they were young, adorable girls! The fact that Yui, Moa, and Su were such adorable youngsters was such a fun poke at the metal hornet's nest that I could not resist once I saw the live performance of IDZ. So yes, them being young girls WAS a huge part of me becoming a fan! If Babymetal had been promoted/presented in a sexualized manner in the least bit, I could not have become such a fan. And now, with them being adults, I remain pleased that they stay true to form and stay dignified! So how do you explain this to people who make assumptions that this makes me/you a creep. I don't concern myself with it, because I know my heart and soul, and I think most fans are in the same place with me. We don't need to explain ourselves, because we are normal and good people. I find this level of self-respect and modesty to be a much appreciated trait among several of the eastern hemishpere female bands I have grown to love, including LOVEBITES, VOB, and more. The same thing happens with all good bands . The comments about them are different . But the results are the same. And it seems to be getting worse. My suggestion is that content creators police their comments and delete the toxic ones. If that happens enough times maybe these people will learn something. I understand that this requires a lot of extra work . Making it harder to build a good channel. So the question remains. What can the rest of us music fans and reaction supporters do to help stop this shit from ruining the experience for everyone. I am more than open to ideas. If they were just going to be an idol group I don’t think they would’ve bothered hiring a band, they could’ve made a lot more money without them. Also, if they were going to exploit them for their appearance, they are not try very hard. The tutus were odd, but their dresses now are knee length or lower and all the way up to the neck. Work boots have a thicker heel than any they’ve ever worn. Even now they are adults and they still wear their modest stage outfits for interviews. I don’t think I’ve seen an idol group with a hair out of place let alone a bucket of sweat running down their faces during a performance. I would label Babymetal more of a concept project around the music more than the girls but it took the girls ability to deliver a live show that made it successful.

So. Here's my take on it. Babymetal ARE an idol group singing over a really good metal band. Idols DO start very young in Japan and Korea. Too young, for sure. All the k-pop and J-pop groups who are popular right now did start way too early in their teens. But let's look at it from an other angle. At what age did I start my first band? 12. Did I get hired by old hairy men? No. But some bands/artists in America did. It's not the same genre, but are the Swifties pedos for liking Taylor swift, especially when she was young? No. It's the same, IMHO. Am I a die hard fan of Babymetal? No. I just don't like idols, and they definitely are. Metal Idols, sure. But idols. But calling their fan base pedos is the same as calling Swifties that. It just doesn't make sense.

It was very eye opening. I've since listened to a ton of japanese jrock and jmetal, and it's just better guys... it's way better. It's musically awesome AND fun. Most bands around here are neither.

A few of my musician friends act the same way when I bring up BAND MAID… they think I’m just being weird and refuses to look past cute girls in maid outfits (their words)… i am not the biggest baby metal fan but I appreciate the crap out of the music! I feel just female led bands from Japan have a weird stigma for an unknown reason… it’s kind of sad because some of the best metal and rock in the world is coming from these bands and people like this are too far up their own ass and ego to accept and acknowledge this great music and musicianship!

One aspect I admire about BabyMetal is how they are NOT exploited sexually. They are very attractive girls/women, but their dresses are not revealing, instead they are elegant. When they were girls, their dresses were cute, like what Shirley Temple used to wear in her movies when she was a little girl. None of that is sexy. I was immediately grateful that I wouldn't be distracted by Su's/Moa's/Yui's/Momo's "sexiness" and could focus on their talents, on their passion for the music and the dancing, and on their enthusiasm for interacting/connecting with their audience. This aspect of BabyMetal is truly something that sets them apart from all the rest. They have broken the entertainment mold, and we're all the better for it. They bring joy into our lives with their infectious smiles and energy. We are lucky to have them.

So inorganic that Yui decided to start a performer career when she saw her favorite band, and ended in the same band as Su. Or she applied for SG together with moa when they still weren't performers. Sadly they are much more fabricated than this bands that are on the payroll of EMI Records since the early 80s for example. And what about Su being nearly 26 years old and could perfectly be a mother nowadays, or a quarter of the fanbase being girls that are under 20. It does not even make sense xD Yeah, fuck that guy.

This guy wears sunglasses inside, has tattoos, and is filming in front of his gear. Clearly he is the arbiter of all that is metal. I started liking Babymetal in like 2020, but I never felt weird going back into the group's past and enjoying their earlier music and performances. Babymetal as an entity produces music that appeals to me, works extremely hard to put on a good show, and has earned a ton of respect and affection from other groups through the years. I think Su is one of the greatest frontpeople in the history of rock and metal music, and I think Su, Momoko, and especially Moa are beautiful young women *_now_* that they're in their 20s. Babymetal concerts, especially those in Japan, have always looked like super fun events. Moreover, I think Metalverse has a lot of potential. I hate to break it to this dude, but not everything carries a sexual connotation.

BabyMetal was the first Japanese band that I found out about. Saw some videos from the Legend 1997 concert. Headbanger, Death, and Catch Me If You Can were my favorite songs. I don't really listen to them much anymore. I have found other Japanese bands such as Band Maid (favorite), Nemophila, Lovebites, and Aldious that I now listen to a lot. Been lucky enough to catch Band Maid in concert a few times and saw Nemophila as well. Hoping Lovebites announces some more cities and dates when they come to the US for that festival in Atlanta next year.

Tangentially related, I've had a lot of trouble getting my friends (some of whom even like Babymetal) to check out Band-Maid. I think they assumed it'd be idol music with girls in pervy maid costumes that could barely play. I finally got them to indulge me and watch the Yokohama concert. They started playing so many of the misconceptions immediately melted away: "They're not even dressed as maids" "What!? This bassist slapps" "They're all over the place with these songs" Not all of my friends became Maidiacs, but I think they finally understood why I won't shut up about this band.

I've been hearing these "p*do" comments and statements since i first discovered them in 2014. It's nothing new. Just ignore. Obviously it's someone who hasn't ACTUALLY listened to them. I don't put much into people like this because they are just projecting their own desires and feelings. He's the one with the P*do mind. Meanwhile, the REAL fan is learning how to play the music on guitar or drums, or at least "air guitar" while listening, or even learn the choreography, for those that are in the dance industry, or young girls who look up to them. Metal has always had a bit of chauvinistic and sexual imagery associated with it. Every band in the 70's and 80's had this. From Ted Nugent to Whitesnake and Poison,Warrant, LA Guns, Faster Pussycat, etc. They ALL sang about underage girls and r*ping them. Now a band of girls makes music that's the complete opposite of all that shit, with uplifting songs and lyrics and not one single sexual conatation to it, and the listener is the P*do?? This is the guy that sings "She's only seventeen" or "She's my cherry pie" or "Cat scratch fever" with no problem, but is the first to throw stones about a band fronted by young women. I tell you man, it's all projection.

I will preface this with "this is my opinion" : some people just don't deserve the right to spew whatever they want on the internet. They lack protocol, maturity, and/or tact when stating their opinion in public. Compound that with a bloated ego from mild success, and you can create a firestorm of triggered fans. I've watched the gals grow up into women, I've watched the phases of band members morph over time, and the company ALWAYS aims for highest quality, FOR THE FANS. Whether you isolate Vocals, Instrumentals, Live Production, or Promotion, they excel in all categories. i v been to a dozen of babymetal show even in japan, 1/its not false, its idol stuff, no child predator, but average fans are 20-30 single men who like girl band dancing. 2/its totally false, because the goal of live show, except the 3-4 first rank wanting see them close, is to bring lot of crowd choregraphy and dance....i ve been to festival with performance and 9mosh pit at same time, yeah more wild than hardcore band. 3/they often offer show for different kind of public like girl only, and festival crowd is different if they perform at festival metal pop or rock. 4/ each title have original style often honoring another band style 5/ the instrument part is really hard like 5pro musician backing them and sono. 6/suzuka is really a good singer. 7/ the girls dont give many interview, dont do tiktok stuff, and always hide their skin, so if you want see half nude babe, theres a whole kpop industry for you...

Thank you so much for calling this guy out. I've been a fan since 2013, and yes they were much younger then. Now they are 25, 24 and 20 respectively. I'm still a huge fan today. It's about the music (not metal? Come to a live show! lol) the dance and the great atmosphere at lives! Probably the best way is to ignore all podcast, social media rants etc from people like this. Nothing shuts up people making podcasts, social media posts etc, more than being ignored. For me, BabyMetal made young girls listen to metal. Seeing dads with their daughters dressed up as the BabyMetal girls, was great to see. Even if you take a cynical marketing approach and say BabyMetal was formed to exploit generational interest, to maximise merchandise products, does that make them that different from many other bands in an industry that sadly, is all about making money for the record companies?
