My favorite personal experience with a transformational sideboard was at a LotR prerelease. My packs let me build a very solid UG scry elf deck but I had a bunch of pretty okay RB orc stuff leftover. So I literally just built a second deck. It caught so many people off guard when I'd sideboard in an entirely different deck.

My favorite was back in 2015 Numot the Nummy was playing in a cube event against someone whose only win con was brain freeze. He sided in something like 1000 basics iirc.

KZbin defaulted to 360p and I misread the blurry Spoils of the Vault as Spirit of the Night. I was like "that is some hot reanimator spice" until i raised the resolution and saw the real card.

This deck costs ~$725 in paper according to the moxfield link. Most expensive cards in this deck are the 4 Urborgs at ~$40 a pop. Handful of cards in the $10-20 each range and Atraxa is hanging around 30 bucks a copy right now.

600 on tcgplayer if you remove the printing preferences. And yeah, urborgs and lotus petals seem to be the highest individual cards
@rood66164 ай бұрын
When you board in the juke its best to keep the 4 entombs and 1 atraxa/archon. It still allows you to attack plan A+B. Shaving 3 swamps is totally fine since you are boarding in 8 extra lands. GGs

My transformational sideboard experience was playing Four Horsemen back in the day! You could pivot totally off that gameplay and move into the double combo of Show and Tell Emrakul PLUS Painters Servent Grindstone.

One benefit of the transformational sideboard is how cheap it is. Urborg is the only card above $10 in the entire plan!

Technically, ThopterDepths wasn't a transformational sideboard deck; it was more of a double-combo deck that came about when Gerry Thompson realized the opportunity cost of slotting the Thopter/Sword combo into the Hexmage-Depths deck was significantly less than the advantage gained by doing so.

Love the deckbuilding concept of a transformational sideboard. My personal favs is creatureless vs creatures. Its pretty mean if you do it right ;D

Early access!! ThrabenU's accreditation must have gone through 🎉 This kind of tricky sideboard nonsense is my kind of 4d chess
@mclark3474 ай бұрын
The biggest problem that most transformational sideboard decks had was that while sideboard cards *can* be narrow, a lot of them aren't so narrow that the same sideboard strategy from your opponent doesn't just answer both halves of the deck. Especially since the majority of your 75 has to have some overlap in terms of general strategy.

Why do you not have 1 surveil Land in the deck
@TheForbiddenDance4 ай бұрын
Taking thay shadowspear instead of the reanimate was a huge punt. What was the worst case with the shadowspear? They put it on a fairy or topdeck a void walker while you have a 20/20?

You are probably vastly underestimating how often I die to aggro after not killing my opponent in a single attack step.
@TheForbiddenDance4 ай бұрын
I probably am, but they still need a creature to put it on, right? Any saga nonsense is a few turns off and the only other creatures we had seen as directly castable only are a few power
@Myrph4 ай бұрын
Genuine question, at 15:20 is there a world where you use Animate Dead on the opponent's Murktide Regent instead of your Grief with the Exhume in hand to then Exhume the Grief on the following turn when your opponent (presumably) hasn't got a creature in grave to return?
@Myrph4 ай бұрын
I guess the exact scenario that follows with the surveil land putting another Murktide Regent into the graveyard is the precise scenario where the above strategy would backfire!

Transformational sideboard aren't really that rare though are they? Just depends on what you mean, or to what extent. This is sorta the meme dream extreme: combo A game 1, combo B game 2 that dodges all the combo A sideboard hate. This league showed the issue though, since combo B rarely dodges all hate (dodged graveyard stuff, but still cared about swords/force/wasteland etc.). But isn't it pretty common for combo decks to be able to board out their combo? Twin won a lot of games as a combo-less blue moon deck game 2/3, etc. Still transformational, just less extreme.
@PurpleDragonSpike4 ай бұрын
I'd argue that they're fairly rare.. Especially if we are going far back as twin to be the example haha. I think it's not usually a full transformation and more of a juke plan these days
@Googleflax4 ай бұрын
Sorry if you mentioned it at some point in the video, but what's the purpose of the Urborgs when all the lands in your deck are basic Swamps? I can't see a way it hurts your opponents, and at 7:00, you can see some downsides to it compared to a Swamp.
@LordWeregerbil4 ай бұрын
It's good for when makes use of his sideboard, since Urborg makes his Dark Depths tap for mana, which makes the combo faster

Biggest problem with the Transformational Sideboard in this league: opponents not preparing enough hate. When Reanimator is running so well, why would you ever want to switch off of Reanimator?

At 32 minutes you had 1 out... spoils for vampire hexmage of lotus play herzmage so u can block troll... yes u need to not die to spoils and u need them to attack with troll letting you kill it and survive two turns ro attack but it would have been cool to see
