The most annoying thing about the “just lose weight” being the only solution that some people have for fashion woes is the fact that weight loss takes a long time. So what are people supposed to wear during the weeks, months, or in some cases years it takes for them to lose weight? Burlap sacks? Everyone deserves to be fashionable and feel good about themselves at any point in their journey.

And it's hard to maintain. You have to do it really slowly and gradually if you want to keep it off. I lost about 60 pounds but gained most of it back during the pandemic. Now my strategy is super super gradual changes, more fruits and veggies here and there, more exercise built into my routine very slowly, better self care, reduce my calories maybe every year by a small amount, you won't even notice I'm trying to lose weight it's that subtle lol. Not sure if it'll work but trying to go really hard changing everything all at once was only effective at the beginning and ended up failing in the end. And doing it gradually is so much less uncomfortable.

Exactly! I fully agree. Clothing is so extremely versatile that it should be theoretically possible to make virtually any body type and shape look good. In practice though, it's a lot more difficult, especially when you consider that the more uncommon your body type is, the more expensive it's gonna be to find something that fits well. I'm not overweight but even I already notice it, for some reason the overwhelming majority of normal pants don't fit me. Either they're too low in the back, meaning I'd be showing butt crack every time I sit down, or they're high enough but they're hanging open at the back while being too tight in the front, as if the pants want to go straight up while my body angles forward.

I wish it was something that is treated more as the learned skill it is than as some inherent thing that people just know or they don’t. Especially because so much of looking right involves easy things that don’t cost all that much money. I'm a seamstress that mainly focuses on fancy dresses, stage costumes (mainly burlesque), and historical stuff. While I mainly do womens clothing, the same stuff applies, and fit is everything. Fast fashion has warped everyones view of how clothing fit. Clothing isn't made to last these days and poor quality. The same problems come up with sourcing our fabrics, which I got into some discussions about recently with a suit maker. Unless you spend a lot of time researching or have had a good hook up for a long time, the quality of most fabrics have been going down. What I really hope is that we start moving back to better quality over quantity in many ways, but that would need a whole culture shift.

@zebraskin9 ай бұрын
@asherroodcreel640 I mean that all depends on the fabric combined with other factors. Most clothing today is a high percentage polyester, which causes a lot of other issues like nano plastics but also loses it's shape, or melts, or wears out long before a good wool, linen, some cottons etc. Also fabric being a lot thinner therefore it wears out sooner. For a historical reference though, cotton use to be woven very tight so the seam allowances for say those all white dresses that many people think about as a "titanc" dress didn't have to finish their seams like we do because it wouldn't unravel like our modren counterparts. And that fabric is a very light weight cotton. As for fast fashion, a lot of the clothing is of course mass made with fast and cheap being the main concern. If someone brings me a dress they found on temu or even the mall and I remake it, my dress not only will fit like a glove but it will hold up longer simple for the face I use a smaller stitch than a mass produced piece. I source quality fabric that will last years, and for the most part I will also repair things for free or very minimal price compared to buying a new one.
@nonniperkl62739 ай бұрын
@@asherroodcreel640 as a sewist as well, we are talking difference of years if not decades here but it is not only that but the comfort of use. Good quality natural fibres breath helping with temperature control, some posses anti bacterial qualities (eg linen) and just simply look better. Wool skirt or pants will last for long ass time and you will look good while doing so. Caring to use a fabric piller, washing them correctly and doing basic repair should be in my opinion regarded as self care. It will improve your quality of life with quite little effort. However there are use cases for artificial fibres. For example, point of polyester is that it doesn’t wrinkle. If you want pair of pants you don’t want to iron, those are your bet. Another department where investment into natural fibre could be a good idea is bed sheets. Linen has anti bacterial properties, regulate moisture and are more sustainable than cotton. and they will only get soften over time but are unbelievably durable. This Christmas I got a new set and I am pretty sure that it should last at least 20-30 years if not longer.

being fat is so fucking isolating and lonely. I just stopped dating in my 20s because I just felt too unattractive to wear anything that's not baggy to hide my belly. I was 375 at my heaviest, and I got bariatric surgery because fuck turning 30 with a body the age of a 50 year old. But that insecurity still sticks with me because people STILL feel the need to constantly label and see me as a fat person. I can't tell you how many underhanded comments I got about my weight, and it would always be while I'm out door dashing to make some fucking money and try to turn my life around and all those comments ever did was make me not want to go out at all. Even just the dirty fucking looks people give heavier people, or the fact that kids stare or make comments and then their parents just pretend like you're not a person with feelings or worse they pretend you don't exist at all. That shit crushed me for so many years. I'm 30 now, i'm 150 pounds down since surgery and now I can finally actually deal with the problems that caused me to baloon in weight in the first place. That's what people don't understand. No one wants to be fat. NO ONE. And the fat person hates themselves more than anyone else possibly could because they're fat. It's completely isolating when your friends and the people around you give you nicknames, or constantly make comments about your weight, and for guys being fat is a fucking social death sentence because every joke that's ever made towards you will now be about your weight in some way. The way men treat fatness is way fucking toxic and a lot of it starts from misogynistic attitudes about how women should look and evolves into constantly making fat jokes at your big friend because it makes you laugh and feel better about yourself. I burned most my friend bridges because of being constantly picked on for being bigger, and then I got gas lit for being a shitty friend because I didn't wanna hang out with people who just make fun of me all the time. But that was a mistake. Don't do what I did. Don't isolate and piss away 10 years of your life being sad like I did. Burning friend bridges in that case was the right thing to do. Thinking that every single person in the world is like that and therefore I need to hide myself away for their sake, was dumb. But honestly society doesn't fucking help, and even in the leftiest circles you can find, fatphobia is still imo one of the BIGGEST societal problems we have because it leads into a lot of other really problematic phobic behavior, and it gets justified with the dumbest dietary pseudoscience possible. People need to understand in general a lot of dietary science isn't science. It's bought and paid for studies usually by companies like coca cola. But every week theres a new diet fad that's being sold as a miracle instead of addressing the problems that cause people to be obese in the first place. But that means companies like coca cola wouldn't get to sell cheap soda to dirt poor kids like me anymore.

Oh thank goodness, I thought I was going crazy. As a woman, clothes shopping has never been easy for me and I always used to prefer to shop for stuff in the men's section because their clothes tended to be sturdier and fit my proportions better. Because women's clothes have had these problems for at least the last 100 years. We aren't built as rectangular as men, in addition to just size, many of us also have boobs and butts that may not be completely proportional to our other measurements. So in women's fashion, clothing has had this stretchy skin tight nightmare situation for years now. Part of why women's clothing doesn't have pockets is because of that. When the clothes are skin tight, having pocket bulges messes with the silhouette and makes you look bulkier. The other reason is to force women to buy handbags. I feel so sorry that now men have to deal with this shit too.

When you’re clothes shopping online, Don’t just remember that the model is super tall and thin (which is f hard to forget) but also remember that they use clips and stuff to make the clothes sit on the model better for the photos. Even if they have a video of the model turning around, the clothes will still be pinned tighter at the back to look more flattering and they do a jump cut to hide the fact that when the model turns around they’ve removed the back clips and popped them on the front side of the model so you can’t see them. This is definitely true for women’s fashion, i don’t see why they wouldn’t do it with menswear also.

There's a trend with women's fashion communities called "is it a 'fit or is she just skinny " where plus sized women will replicate a poplar outfit to see if what people think looks good about the outfit is the clothing or the wearers body. It's actually a really helpful and interesting commentary on women's fashion and is helping to normalize the notion that a lot of what we consider fashionable is actually just thinness. It also helps to spotlight fashion brands and designers who succeed at making clothing that looks good on a range of body types. I think the men's fashion world could benefit from their own version of this

Things like shoulder width, how beefy your legs are, and just how your body stores fat in general. Every body is different, and men are no exception. Men’s fashion should reflect this! I’m 5’7 and kinda chubby with broad shoulders. I’ve tried on shirts that are a size 2XL that don’t fit me well, and shirts in a size L that fit me just fine. Especially those 90’s boxy tees that he mentioned. Men need the same amount of choice and variety in fashion that women are used to. It would do wonders for our confidence.

And I have the same problem where every single solution I get from people is "loose weight" or they'll be like, "Go on Amazon" and then I look at what their showing me and it's a pair of high waisted pants that would go up to my boobs. Cuz that's all that's anywhere. High waisted pants and shirts for women who are average in height and fairly skinny. As someone who's short and fat, I'm lucky if I find a single pair of jeans that I have to roll up the bottoms so they don't go over my toes. Even plus size stores online don't even have anything that fits me as a short person. Everything is way too long so I have to go to the children's section and there I still can't find anything because shirts there are meant for flat chested people. Bullshit that I go shopping and find 2 pairs of jeans, a jacket, and 4 tops for $100. That's literally made up. That NEVER happens. Don't even get me started with the excessive amounts of crop tops. I don't need just my stomach hanging out of my shirt because that's all that it's going to do.

People are not aware of how important proportions are when it comes to clothes and fashion. Tight fitting clothes usually only looks good on muscular people or people with muscular/athletic builds. Im a skinny guy so tight clothes would just emphasize how skinny I am because the tight shirt be tightly wrapped around the boney areas and the shirt would be tightly wrapped around my small waist. For chubbier guys, tight clothes would emphasize the chubby rolls around the waist and emphasize the man boobs, as seen in the Reddit post . His sweater is too slim fitting for someone of his proportions and shows his rolls and man boobs. His sweater is also of thin material so it’s more malleable and more form fitting, if it were a thicker material then it’s likely his man boobs and nipples would not be poking out as much. Cool looking clothes are great but the material and the fit are also very important I am a somewhat skinnier guy, so I like to buy shirts and sweatshirts and hoodies with a slightly oversized/relaxed fit so that I appear a bit bigger and not as skinny. A chubbier person wearing slightly oversized clothing would also be beneficial because it would hide their chubbiness.

One thing I do dissagree with, I don't think losing weight is simple. It is technically, calories in vs calories out is the golden rule, but most people only ever think of the simple solution, that is eating less. For an example of what I mean, depending on what it is you are eating you can be more or less full. A lot of the struggle of losing weight is being hungry, take away that struggle and its easier. There is more to it than just eating less. One thing I found is that I often snack when I am bored, if I am doing stuff, anything, I will end up eating less.

(there are distinct differences between being overweight, obese, and just plain ol' fat but healthy as a horse.) and because of that, i'm STILL afraid of losing weight, even though i can stand to lose, like, a LOT of it at this rate, because my body will panic if i lose too much too quickly, and i can never be sure if it's because my gut is declaring a psyop warfare on me for the next round of flair-up. that being said: at first glance, the guy in the first photo could opt in for some diet and exercise, but not as extreme as those on The Biggest Loser crap reality show, so he can easily lose the weight slowly if he chooses to; in the long run, it's doable, and no doubt a change in diet alone could help with his mental health if he already does exercise from doing daily house chores or walk/bike to work. however, i wouldn't be surprised if there are undergarments for men, not just for women, that can help slim up his gut a bit (a body suit i think). as for the guy you're obviously drooling over, yeah he looks good the way he is. you can be fat but not obese; being fat is how you look, being [morbidly] obese is a health issue. it's a complicated issue, still, so it's still up for debate as long as there's no fat-shaming but concerned about potential future health issues like type 2 diabetes. Edit: oh, crap, i didn't think to factor in food reactivities and other aspects that causes inflammation and water weight gain to the entire body. also: look up Kushing's disease; not fun.

Everything people talk about in fashion also applies to glasses: proportions, width, cut (i.e. frame shapes), etc. Something I love about Warby Parker and a lot of online retail glasses places now is you can buy not just different frames but different widths, and WP also lets you try those on in the store. But if it's just an issue in photos, honestly it could just be the lighting, if it's overhead your glasses will cast darker shadows and obscure your features.

An easy way to make clothes look and feel better is to use shapewear underneath your clothes. Even if this man loses weight, he will likely have some loose skin, and shapewear is also a good solution for that.
@ultratog10289 ай бұрын
My advice? A well fitting sweater vest over a long sleeve shirt will probably look better. It's not a body weight issue. Fashion is fitting clothes to your body, not fitting your body to clothes.

Some of the best clothing advice I can give to guys is to shop women's stuff. I personally find that a lot of men's stuff pretty samey, and there's a lot of women's stuff that's looser fitting and looks just fine on guys. There's also more variance in terms of sizing. And there are a lot of guys like me who have a small waist and narrow shoulders who just look bad in most men's stuff but look really nice in women's.

I'm someone who really struggles with fashion and clothing. I was ultra slender growing up, but most of my adult life I've had about 20 or so pounds overweight. The difficulty I have always had is with a unique set of visual disabilities co-morbid with each other. In much the same way that I (functionally, but not literally) have prosopagnosia and thus, cannot recognize faces (literally my brain cannot put people's faces together into a cohesive image in my mind), I cannot put together in my mind what articles of clothing look like or might look like on any body including myself. I might be able to say "I think x outfit looks good/bad on y person" but I couldn't identify the things that make it look good or bad on a given person. I can only tell if something is comfortable on me. I've had my particular blend of vision issues my entire life, so being able to figure this subject out myself has been incredibly difficult. Lucky for me, I married a fashion forward boutique owner. But that's a crutch. I wish I had an eye for it, but as I don't have much of an eye for anything (except, a good view of nature, ironically), it's something I likely will always struggle with getting a handle on. It's tough having to rely on others for something like dressing yourself so you don't look awful.

As a woman who has a bigger chest but small to mid size waist, it was always sad going dress shopping. I could never find bras that fit me in stores (id have to order them from a catalog). Dresses would either fit in the bust but be tight in the waist or vice versa because clothing was designed with skinny girl/small boobs in mind.

Aaaah ok as a (almost dietitian) it's not actually that simple to lose weight. A calorie deficit can cause your body to think it's starving and slow down your metabolic rate to conserve energy. In addition your body creates more hunger hormones to increase you appetite. Meaning on a biological level, your body is hungrier, meaning it's only a matter of time until your willpower breaks and you overeat, and your metabolism is slower. Dieting has been shown to lead to greater weight gain over time.
@loopholesloopy9 ай бұрын
How do you lose weight then?
@AR-de8qz9 ай бұрын
@loopholesloopy it's different for everyone but generally I would recommend a very small calorie deficit which does deprive you of carbs. Carb restriction is very common in the diet space and since it is our bodies preferred source of energy, if we aren't getting enough and feel deprived it's only a matter of time until you binge eat carbs. Building a diet that feels fulfilling for you is also super important, so focus on what you can add to your current diet to improve satiety and that will be enjoyable for you. For me, I love desserts, but sometimes I don't actually want a slice of cheesecake, I'm craving something sweet with fat, and so chocolate milk can hit that craving. This means I'm feeling emotionally fulfilled dessert wise, but I didn't eat 900 calories of cheesecake. So learning about your hunger cues and what they actually mean is super helpful. Overall I would recommend trying to improve diet by increasing fiber and unsaturated fats and eating more mindfully. For a calorie deficit I would not recommend above 200 calories, and honestly I think it's unethical to promote dieting and weight loss as goals as Healthcare providers. Weight loss has time and time again been shown to be unsustainable and weight cycling is actually more detrimental for health than a consistent higher weight. Instead focusing on improving health through diet and exercise without the goal of weight loss is a better strategy. Anyway this is a subject I care alot about. I have a bachelor's in Dietetics and just finished my first semester of my masters program in Nutrition.

@@AR-de8qz So calorie deficit will help me lose weight?
@AR-de8qz9 ай бұрын
@raingulfdrengot195 not all calorie deficits are created equal. Doing too much too fast will lead to cravings and a slowed metabolism, which can lead to stagnation and weight gain. So I wouldn't recommend a calorie restriction but if you did, nothing more than 200 calories.

The reason clothes fit better was because clothes were mostly made for (or at least tailored to)the specific wearer. Yes, even if you were poor (you'd just do it yourself/have your wife/mom/sister etc do it) Clothes were more expensive, but people would have less of them. Fast fashion has killed good clothes.

I say this respectfully but fashion is unfortunately an attractive person thing. You need specific body shapes, which usually means being relatively fit, to pull off good looks. I speak as someone built like Dr. Eggman and has to go to specialty stores to get shoes that fit so I'm waaaaaaaay to ugly to make any attempt to look fashionable.

Pro tip(s) for losing weight/having a more healthy diet: -When cutting back on calories, do not go "cold turkey" (never go cold turkey on any diet change). Change diet gradually. If you go from your usual caloric intake one day, immediately to your "goal intake" the next day, your body can go into a sort of starvation response, and you will actually have a more difficult time losing weight, and than get discouraged. -All calories are not the same. Or at least, that is a bad attitude to have, leading to excuses for bad habits. Try to eat minimal sugar or sweeteners as possible (I also include sweeteners, because sweeteners will not reduce sugar cravings. If you cut back on your sugar and sweetener intake, over time the cravings will reduce). Excess sugar (and potentially also carbs) are the main contributors towards weight gain. Try to drink more water and less soda and sugary drinks. And try to eat things high in fiber, as fiber slows down how fast your body processes food, leading to you feeling more full for longer. Sugar also affects the sensitivity of our bodies' hunger response, it dulls the affect of the hormone leptin, which tells the body when you're full. With a high sugar diet you might not actually ever feel very full. -If you have problems with snacking, try to have bigger more substantial meals, and slowly cut back on snacks. If you feel fuller from meals, you won't focus as much on casual snacking. -Both diet and exercise is important, but diet is far more important than excercise. Don't try to compensate for poor diet by over exercising. We actually don't need very much exercise to live a healthy life. And with how many calories foods have, trying to burn off "bad foods" on a daily basis is a losing battle. Also, with a better diet, you won't tire as quickly and will be able to exercise more efficently.
@RobotMasterSplash9 ай бұрын
Exercise is more important than diet. If you keep yourself immobile every day, it's not going to matter what you eat because your body wont use it. The only exception are things like soda, because people easily consume over 200g of extra sugar per day with a soda habit. Exercise will make your body crave nutrients and healthy foods more, and condition it to make full use of everything you eat. Managing your diet is 10 times easier and more effective when you're regularly exercising.
@TheGoodDirtbag9 ай бұрын
@@RobotMasterSplashthey never said to keep yourself immobile all day. They said a healthier diet is going to be more important than trying to burn something crazy like 1000 calories a day because you ate badly. You could do a small amount of exercise a day and eat healthy and that’s going to yield a healthier outcome. “You can’t out-train a bad diet”

If you are talking about suits and more formal clothes, there is a trend to slimmer cuts, but elsewhere in fashion oversized and boxy cuts are very much the trend. I am a very skinny guy who always wore skinny jeans and slim fits, and over the past few years, I have felt a bit forced to embrace bigger cuts because slimmer pants have become quite hard to find. But now I love oversized clothes, and I especially love that fashion has become more accessible for more body types with this trend. Chore jackets are also a great, underrated item for bigger people to look classy.

Losing weight would definitely make that person actually look decent. If you don't eat right, you won't look right. Take it from someone who has been on both sides from previously being obese, to getting six pack shredded. The fact someone thinks that his weight isn't that bad, shows just how skewed our society has become from how almost everyone is massive.

For me its usually darker colors without a lot of sheen and a sense of how it will fall over your body are key points. Also thicker fabric can be your enemy since the folds can be very prominent, much like strechy thin fabric. I go for a thin(er) fabric that isnt very strechy and that fits me well enough. Its also really hot where i live so layering is usally out of the question for me and when it comes time to wear warmer clothes, i usually go for the utility more than the drip so i dont look too deep😅 Also if you wanna go shopping take someone with you thats interested in fashion or shopping, they can gife you useful feedback but of you trust your gut then more power to you!
