I love the hunt as well. I ran into a single bit hatchet back in my home state of Ga. Then when I moved to Spokane Wa. I ran into a double bit hatchet. The double bit is a Norlund and the single is a Genuine Norlund. I'm hoping to hit the trifecta with the Frontiersman. I know its a pipe dream seeing how there was only 1000 of them made. But that's why we live for the hunt. Love the Norlunds.
@KillingerUSA4 жыл бұрын
I think they made more than a 1000. I have seen at least that many pass by on Ebay haha!

Nice job Dude. I just inherited my Dad's Norland Hudson Bay Ax w/28" handle and m looking forward to bringing her back to "working prowess", so your video was a good one to get motivated by. Even though I don't have all the big power tools you've got it was still motivating. Thanks for the video.
@KillingerUSA6 жыл бұрын
Nice! I have a thing for norlunds as you can tell by some of my videos! Everything you see in this video can be done and has been done with only hand tools. What you didnt see in this video is the 5 hours I spent hand sanding that head to get a clean smooth finish. That would be boring. Power tools speed things up but you cant beat a hand finish. Good luck and have fun!!!
@c.e.jarvis15126 жыл бұрын
@@KillingerUSA Thanks! Just a question...what grits did you cycle through to end up with such a nice finish? Also, What length handle would this have had on it from the factory? The one it has on it now says 28" boys axe for 21/4lb. and I can't read it all but I can see LaPierre Sawyer Hdle. Co. Jackson,Mo.
@KillingerUSA6 жыл бұрын
@@c.e.jarvis1512 it's hard to remember on this one but in most cases I will start with 80 grit. Next I got 120, 220, 320, 400, 600, 800, 1000. If going for a mirror, which o almost never do I will worknmh way up to 2000. I also use scotch brite pads in course medium fine and extra fine. All depends on the steel and what look I'm after. I believe the original handle was 24"?

Nice job. Was the original haft not salvageable? I try to reuse my old hafts whenever possible. FYI, I have a couple of Norlunds with factory handles, and they are hung very high on the haft, about like the one that you did,. By doing that, you made it look even more "factory" IMO. The bevels on the lower part of the poll are nice. You balanced them very well. When leaving the haft proud, I don't think that you really need to use the metal wedge. And they split the wood more often than not. There are countless vids on line where the creator says almost exactly what you said just after pounding in a metal wedge 'Well unfortunately, the metal wedge split the wood". Figure it is going to happen and be glad if it doesn't. Better yet, leave the haft proud, like you did, and don't use a metal wedge. Without the metal wedge, IF the head starts to get loose, you can just use something narrow and pound the wood wedge farther in to tighten the head. When you get home you can replace it with a wider wedge if you want the wedge and haft to be flush again.

The Tomahawk in the intro says Tomahawk on it, this one doesn't and this looks like mine which also does not say Tomahawk; is that typical for some to have the label and some not? Why and how can I tell?

You ditched a Norland original handle in good condition for a modern junk over the counter handle. Grinding and polishing then throwing that handle on is not restoring the axe it is just turning something that was wonderful into something that’s ok but looks shiny. Use an axe for a bit before trying to restore vintage axes at the high end level.
@KillingerUSA4 жыл бұрын
Look at you! Coming in here and laying down facts. He is something you missed. Was not an original handle. Not in any way. Appreciate your feedback.

Does anyone else feel norlunds are a little overrated . they were sold at Kmart until later 80's
@KillingerUSA7 жыл бұрын
Seth Stidams Kmart used to sell lots of good quality items in the late 80's. The thing to keep in mind, Mann Edge made these out of the same steel they made everybody else's axes out of. Just got a different stamp.
@TylerSnyder3056 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't call this " amazing " because you sanded the patina off of an old American axe, but it is just a norlund tomahawk after all. And at least you didn't go crazy and polish it or anything. Sure norlunds are very desirable, but don't really deserve the cult following they have. A decent axe but were never premium despite that went to Sweden to learn legend which I'm sure isn't true. Btw why put blo on the head ? In my experience it ends up all gummy and sticky, so I make sure to wipe off any that gets on my tool heads and oil them with mineral oil.
@KillingerUSA6 жыл бұрын
Tyler Snyder thanks for your input! "Amazing" was click bait and it worked ;) Dont take this stuff too seriously man. It's not about what you have. It's all about the hunt! Thanks for watching!!!
