I grew up in the Antelope Valley where Rider ended up playing and going to college before UNLV. He was in trouble long before UNLV. IIRC he is originally from Oakland, got into trouble there, came out to AV high school (which is a wasteland where no top prospects would go). The fact that no academies wanted to pick him up and give him a scholarship is very telling. He couldn't even get into a division 2 college. Rider went to AV community college (a division 3 school) after high school. Jerry Tarkanian's son was the coach and told his father about Rider.That's how Rider ended up in UNLV. This guy was a giant red flag from day one. All the talent in the world, but not desire for greatness. Best Rider story. When he got pulled over in Portland and he was busted for possession of weed, Rider was asked by the cop for his ID. Rider pulls out his basketball card and not his drivers license.

Many of the players who went pro in the 1993 NBA Draft struggled with injuries and personal issues during their playing days. Chris Webber, Penny Hardaway, Allan Houston, and Jamal Mashburn were All-Stars whose careers were cut short due to injuries. Isaiah Rider and Vin Baker were also very good NBA players, but they were plagued by personal issues.

I grew up in Minnesota during Rider’s time. I very much recall them trading him after Garnett’s rookie season specifically to get him away from Garnett so he wouldn’t influence him. Garnett and JR had become friends. They also traded Christian Laettner halfway through Garnett’s rookie year to pave the way. Two good moves they made in an otherwise embarrassing collection of personnel moves attempting to build around KG.

When McHale drafted KG in 1995, Laettner disliked it and he got traded. As for Rider, he missed plenty of practices, got pulled over for drug possession, hated by his teammates because of his selfish attitude, and refused to seek help. Yes, Rider was a extremely talented basketball player, but he was extremely selfish.

I started watching Minnesota during KG's rookie season. Rider was a problem. I remember that season he had great games against the 72-10 Bulls. So in response to the question if another team has ever gotten rid of their leading scorer, the 94 Hawks did. At the deadline they were the #1 seed at the time and traded away Dominique Wilkins to the Clippers for Danny Manning and then lost Manning in FA at the end of the season. Wilkins was 34 coming off an Achilles tear but was putting up All Star numbers and the FO/ ownership didn't want to pay him. This would make for a good video imo as this is one of the worst trades a team has ever made at the deadline. What other team that has had a shot at a championship trades away their franchise player for nothing?

The trade looks even more horrendous after the fact because not only did Manning leave after the end of the season he never became the star people thought he'd be so he wasn't even worth giving up not only their best player at the time but their second best player in the history of the Hawks franchise.

But by the time he got there the key players were old and in fast decline. Leaving was bad for Atlanta, but not good for him either. In my opinion, this is where T'Wolves messed up. They drafted Laettner the year before. Arguably the greatest college basketball player of all time. He was arrogant but still discipline. Rider was good but not disciplined. Wolves would have been better served by drafting another discipline player like Cheaney who had Knight at Indiana or Hurley who was Laettners teammate at Duke with Coach K. Wolves also had bad luck in lottery. In 93, they had #4 pick, #3 pick was Jamal Mashburn. In 94, they had #4 pick, #3 pick was Grant Hill. In 95, they had #5 pick, #4 was Rasheed Wallace.

He had come back from the Achilles tear still a star, until KD he was the only one, and him being 34 ownership wasn't interested in paying him so they traded him to the Clippers for budding star Danny Manning. The kicker is Danny Manning left the Hawks in Free agency at the end of the season so they had a shot at the title and gave away their franchise player for nothing, one of the worst fumbles by a FO in NBA history!

I am one of the few who actually got to watch J.R. when he was playing for Encinal High School in Alameda, CA. Why was I "one of the few"? Because over his four years at Encinal, he only played about half a season. The rest of the time, he was off the team for either disciplinary or scholastic reasons. The one game I did see him play, he was disinterested, drifting through the game at half-speed. Barely played defense unless the play came right into his area... Scored 20 or so without much effort at all, and his team lost by 10. His obvious talent and physical supremeness was completely wasted. He'd get into trouble for silly things, like getting caught pitching pennies on the street corner, etc... And his excuse would be "The 'Man' is always out to get me" or somesuch. For awhile at junior college and at UNLV, it looked from the outside like he was starting to figure life out, but nope... Too bad. In my estimation, he could have been a truly great superstar on the level of Jordan, Magic, Kobe, etc. Hope this more recent news shows that he's finally started to get things on the right track.

If this was blackballing, then Rider did what he could to keep himself out of the league. When youre a dunce and a headcase but youre young and talented, people think it's cute. When you're 30 and still do it, people get tired of you. As for a team trading their best scorer, Denver traded Kiki Vandeweghe and went to the conference finals the next year. The Pistons traded Jerry Stackhouse in 2002 and 2 years later won a title. Seattle traded Xavier McDaniel and steadily got better for the next 5 years. Sometimes its best to sell high on a guy with good numbers while you can still find a chump to bite.

The 1990's was hard for shooting guards. Franchises were looking for the next Michael Jordan and the focus was on being that guy at shooting guard. The mentality sort of required being a bit selfish, slashing to the basket and volume scoring with mostly mid-range shooting. And Isaiah Rider on paper fit that mold. Unfortunately, there could only be one MJ. Other players with amazing talent such as Tracy McGrady and Anfernee Hardaway were originally drafted and projected to be a sort of a prototype Magic Johnson with their handles, size and length. But ultimately, their games were more suitable for the SG position. I wish Isaiah Rider's career flourished better. It was a shame that Kevin Garnett arrived later. The Minnesota T-Wolves had so much bad luck with chemistry back then. The T-Wolves players should have been a contending team if they all simply bought into Kevin McHale's plan. The T-Wolves had talent on paper during that 1990's stretch.

Isiah Rider? A rising NBA star? He played basically 5 full seasons before falling off and his best advanced stats in those 5 years was a PER of 15.6 (role player), ws/48 of 0.99 (role player), obpm 2.0 (role player), dbpm -1.1 (below role player). Arguably his best year was at age 25 in 1997-98 with stats of: PER 15.2 WS/48 0.99 BPM 0.1 VORP 1.5 With counting stats of near 20/5/3 with the worst TS% of his career so far at 51.4%, a far cry from the 55% TS he had for the previous 3 seasons. He was merely an "okay" piece with nothing special to write home about and had a bigger mouth than game.

I looked up this vid because I wondered how JR went from all-star level talent to back-up, garbage time player for my Lakers. He would kill us when he played for Portland.
