This Russian Navy Destroyer is Deadlier Than You Think - Sovremenny class

So today we start with the first episode by discussing the destroyer of Project 956 known as The Sovremenny class destroyer from USSR. The Sovremenny class is a destroyer of Soviet origin. It was developed in the late 1970's to complement the Udaloy class which is better suited in the anti-submarine role. The Sovremenny class was to be used against NATO warships and to provide air defense. The ships have anti-ship, anti-aircraft, anti-submarine and coastal bombardment capability. Sovremenny is the widely used NATO reporting name for what is officially called the Project 956. Its nickname is Sarych which is Russian for buzzard. Its primary role is to attack enemy warships while also providing sea and air defense for warships and transports under escort. For your information, the destroyers of Project 956 are third-generation Soviet destroyers, and the Ships of this project were the last destroyers built in the USSR.

The old USSR destroyers were armed with everything that could fit during the “Cold War” era. The old “Cold War” gunship destroyers have been replaced with the modern guided missile destroyers since the end of the “Cold War“. The new Russia government has stopped designing new destroyers and will design smaller size frigates instead of the larger size destroyers after the old USSR destroyers are decommissioned; as a cost savings needed smaller crew and maintenance.

Your making this up, the soviets where totally not making 'a jack of all trades" unlike NATO ships they lacked a lot of multi-mission capablity. these where very specifically surface war far ship, such that they carriered strictly radar picket helos with no ASW ability so they could target stuff out at the range of its missiles (which are not sea skimming) though the helo.

I think I remember my encounter with this warship in Wargame: Red Dragon. Very resiliant, hard to kill and very dangerous. I remember initially sending wings of planes 2x F-15 against it and nothing come close to him. His anti-missiles guns manage to kill all missiles and he was very able to kill planes as well. I had to muster a lots of planes, and few destroyers and attack it from all sides simultaniously and then finally got some hits. It was dominating the sea.

In wargame you only really get OHP’s to take it down. IRL the sovremeny only has short range missiles+older ciws, and can’t really do an insane amount against ASM’s. But yea, in red dragon you gotta launch saturation attacks on em.

Why not replace those obsolete single missile SAM launchers with the new Poliment-Redut VLS? These have a 120Km range, and need much less time to react to threats. And they can also replace one of the AK-130 guns with anti-ship VLS. I think these upgrades will give this ship much more potential.

@@zainjawaid2556 the destroyer would never get close to hitting a carrier. If you include the strike group there will be many Ciws there to protect the carrier. The problem with Russian ships is there intel systems arnt as good as western systems. They cant track and kill more then 3-5 targets at a time. This means russian ships are vulnerable to saturation attacks, something that carriers are really good at even if you discount the carrier group. So one on one realistically a russian ship should win on paper but a russian ship against multiple means its going to sink.

Anyone who doubts the capabilities of Sovremenny class Destroyer is in for a rude awakening...having said that they won't survive a fight with the US Navy...there's just too few of them. The Americans would not want to take a Sovremenny one-on-one, so they won't. The Americans will swarm the four ships in that class. The Americans have 68 Burke class Destroyers...that's quite an advantage, not to mention 11 "Super Aircraft Carriers" and 11 more "Mini-Aircraft Carriers". In an Sea War the Russians would be slaughtered just by the sheer weight and number of American vessels...not to mention other NATO partners.

A laser has actually very short range. You can't hit anything over the horizon with a laser. However an 18 inch artillery shell that will go 50 miles and can be corrected with a spotter is going to do a hell of a lot of damage. Well over the horizon. You're about 15 years too late on this video. The Sovremenny was a decent (by Russian standards) DDG years ago, with her ASCM capability, but she's long since obsolete. Her once capable ASCM are now easily defeated by modern passive and active decoys in addition to newer anti-air point defense weapons. Her electronic fit is seriously aging, her SAM (what little she has) is equally old and obsolete. This class is such a POS now that the Russians have decom'd most of them. It's not deadlier than I think, its about 10 years from being made into an artificial coral reef. The Russians just don't seem interested in updating her or maintaining a viable surface navy to counter external threats. Instead, they seem bent on developing smaller FFLs similar to the GRISHA for coastal defense and rely on submarines (which they actually excel at) for power projection. Their CV is a joke, she's always broken and never makes it through a deployment without having to go back for repairs. Russian navy is a shadow of what it once was during the cold war. As someone said below, they look scary... but that's about it. Naval warfare isnt about who looks the scariest, it's about who hits first, who hits last, and who doesn't get hit at all. The only thing the Sovremenny is going to hit in a modern naval battle vs any of her current adversaries, is the bottom.

The Udaloys are all being modernized (and quite extensively), while the Sovremennys are on their way out. It's possible a couple of Sovremennys will be kept around with mild modernizations and overhauls for another 5-10 years. Otherwise it's the Gorshkov and Super Gorshkov classes that will be replacing them.
