I absolute love this locomotive! It's completly adorable. (I even decided to make a model of one of those small locomotives for a mining train based on the Märklin rockwagons if i can get a singel pice 00 motorboggi, 00 is a quite rare scale in my coutry but i taught it would match my old 1930s Hornby Tankloco if it's slightly bigger than the H0 locos i hawe in my collection but can still use the same system as the German H0 trains i think. For now the miniature trains is as close i can get the full size i guess... but i still dreaming... ha ha. ).

Congratulations on being invited to the test run and that's certainly a nice little Ruston. They've done a good job and I liked the rolling stock as well. Compared to prepping and raising steam on something like the saddle tank loco you reviewed, it must have seemed like a new world when the drivers changed over to diesels. Lawrie, you keep reminding me of my family history. My Grandfather told me he would have to put his pipe out before driving a steam engine to pick up his train at the ammunition factory during WW2! A bit more risky than a little Ruston, methinks. Thanks again for the memories.

Very cool piece of equipment, I'm so glad you were able to give us a tour of it! A smashing video, that’s brought back some fun memories - thank you. Occasionally in 2015-16 I drove the twin sister, RH 221625, also ex-RNAD BM, while on a long-term loan to the sadly short-lived Penrhyn Quarry Railway revival project in Gwynedd as PQR No26… 26 cemented my fondness of Rustons, and I miss it. I was in stitches at 19:45 , because the brake on 26 worked when going forward perfectly, but hardly at all in reverse, much as you found here - how did the brake perform going forwards on 221623? Also: You could’ve made life even easier still on yourself starting it up - the injection pump has a lever on the back you can reach your fingers around to to flick up, releasing the control rack to push even further forwards than the throttle lever allows (it drops back automatically after starting). The guys up from the Moseley Trust minding 0-4-2ST ‘Stanhope’ taught us that, and reckoned that these 48DL’s are bizarrely easier to manual start than the diddy 20DL’s. Couldn’t see them in your video, but the other quaint curiosity certainly with the engine in 26 (possibly swapped for the Lister equivalent?) was the glow plugs: they were essentially long bolts with a T-handle that you unscrew, shove the handleless end in a fire or blow-torch flame until red hot, replace swiftly but safely into the engine, and then you attempt to start the thing up as quickly as you can! Thank you again.
@lmm
@lmm 4 жыл бұрын
I'm really glad you enjoyed it! They're great fun things to drive aren't they. Massive shame about Penrhyn, it looked like it had so much potential and character. The brakes... Just needed adjustment full stop 😂 Oh really? That's a useful hint for the future! We'd talked about putting in a similar heating system into my 48 when it didn't want to start.

I imagine that is very similar to the unit that got blown up when the RNAD at Bedenham had a mishap back in the '40s/'50s. Apparently my great-grandmother was on the outside toilet of her house on the far side of Fareham, some 7 or so miles away, and the explosion blew the toilet door open on her. The entire train was destroyed and the remains of the loco were thrown hundreds of metres from the site of the explosion...

Might be a long stretch for you and potentially not worth your time, but an amazing Locomotive (and quite frankly worth the trip) is the Frisco 1630 here in the “Good” Ol’ US of A. It’s one of the few surviving Frisco locomotives and one of two operational decapods in the US. Its located in the Illinois Railway Museum, the largest in the nation I believe, but if that doesn’t peak your interest, the IRM also has just recently restored a Class A (I think) Shay geared Locomotive. Either way it’s a bit of a journey so it’s your call my friend

Love your work Lawrie! I would love a video/s on how to drive a steam loco and fire t and maintain it and all that good stuff. I can’t find all that many videos in the subject. Also are you in to miniature railways? Like 5” gauge and all that?

We can do that, I'll put it in the to shoot list. I've got a little 3.5 inch Rob Roy that I need to do the boiler on.

I always learned to keep my thumbs On Top of the cranking handle rather than around it because if it kicks back and the engine's big enough it'll break your thumb
@KrisDouglas

To be honest on an engine that size you need to be able to properly grab the handle and pull it out or you have a 48hp egg whisk on your hands.
