The usual go-to for me and my friends were 007 night fire, metal arms, and custom robo. I was the only one who played any single player stuff so I often had friends bring games to me, so I could unlock stuff for them, so they could use them for multi-player.

I just wanna mention that this game not only DOES work on dial-up, but was designed around it. Apparently Japanese Dreamcasts has slower 33.6 kbps modems and they wanted them to be able to play with people around the world so it was designed for that. The netcode was insanely clever, prioritizing what data got sent and allowed this game to play largely great on dial-up! Basically connections did not affect player movement at all and it sent "who is doing damage to what" as the top priority, followed by positioning, with chat at minimum priority. The result was that you would often see party members attacking a wall while an enemy on the other side of the room takes damage...but I'll take that over the alternative! I think the simplistic AI was also a result of trying to send as little data as possible over dial-up. Both DC and Gamecube had dial-up modems...but of course XBox did not. Also if you wanted to chat on Gamecube you had to import a keyboard controller for like $80. Never sold those in America.

PLaying this on the gamecube with friends had so much charm, especially because for us it was before the days of min/maxing the fun out of games and any research we'd do was through gaming magazines or through the very few moments I could get online (I too, was one of the last people to upgrade from dial-up to broadband) and doing something like getting a rare mag and bringing it over to show off to friends was a lot of fun. Its a shame the sequels couldn't capture the same magic, because I'd kill for a modern MMO or Action RPG PSO.

Well...there's a game called Atlyss that's basically furry PSO. It's still in early access but is doing pretty darn good for a $10 indie game made by one person.

@@Vesven1 You are right about that. There's no other soundtrack that just pulls you in like the intro of pso. The music is soooooo good in all 3 of the games. It's mostly the reason why I played the 3rd one so much.

If you want to experience the online experience, try one of the fan run servers. For example, Ephenia is mostly vanilla to blueburst (aka episode 4), and the only real changes are QoL and some minor rebalancing of the Section ID system to not make some Section ID's broken.

@Vesven1 try them out and have fun. Just remember, the online plays by slight different rules than offline, even on the Xbox/GameCube. Like you don't get I frames unless you get knocked down, so some enemies get way more dangerous, like the garanze.

While I never played Phantasy Star Online, I do played the second one (PSO2)... and the pseudo reboot that came after that. Well, at least now I can say I get the reference on some of the bosses that reappear in the newer games. It's interesting to see what the game was, in comparison to the newer entries. Combat's certainly got quicker, with extra classes that expands what the base three did, powercreep be damned. (Etoile Class, my beloved.) ..this comment is probably going to look out of place here, but what the heck, you made me interested on an old gem and I just wanna say thank you for sharing a g(old) of a game.
@Vesven1
@Vesven1 12 күн бұрын
I actually used to play pso2 but lost interest before they rebooted it (I think before new genesis?) is it worth getting back into then?
@mogman389
@mogman389 12 күн бұрын
@Vesven1 The reboot basically just turns it into an Open world-ish MMO, so if you want a map similar to pre-reboot PSO2 or PSO, you'll probably be disappointed. The combat got quicker, with a revamp of the OG three classes to make it more nimble, with extra classes getting the same treatment. Story? since when did PSO2 cared about story lol. If anything, the Character Creator is dope. If I'm not cleaving through enemies for a daily, I usually just try out new clothes to make new sets of drip for my digital waifu. If any of that tickle your fancy, go ahead. I personally liked it, though I've stopped playing for awhile because of burnout.

@@Vesven1 NGS is sadly not very good. In most aspects, it's boring, in the rest, it's kind of bad... mogman says the CC is good, but it's just the regular old PSO2 one with a few more QoL tweaks and upgrades and such that have been added over time. Which, it's still the best CC in the world, but not really its OWN pro point
@mogman389
@mogman389 12 күн бұрын
@@soya_kitchens I suppose I sounded a bit harsh, there. Apologies. I was talking about the NGS story, that while it has its moments, kinda slogs with its updates and pacing in hindsight. Feels like they stretched a 1-year story to cover, like, 5 years of content or something like that. No worries, I too loved the OG PSO2 story, episode 1 - 3 slaps, episode 4 is hilarious in a meta sense, haven't done 5 & 6 yet so no comments on that.

So uh, old IT guy here, important fact correction. Charging for Internet is actually harder than just having a NIC attached to the console, its why most things from early console internet didn't have subscription fees. Server space was typically literally 1/25 of the cost it is now, and you were already paying comcast or whatever to access it. In fact sometimes ISPs would pay out to places like sony to have their server space on their networks because it drove traffic and was known to sell service in areas. Microsoft kinda ruined the party, and micro pays the bills for most devs now, so charging for Internet service to console is just theft. Just a quick FYI
