Thanks for the great video and the reminding about "Left Alive". I'm not a fan of "Front Mission" and not fully played/completed any parts of series, only started a bit few times. But after completing "Alpha Protocol" twice in a row and the fact that I liked it despite all the gameplay problems - I'm not afraid of anything anymore in ambition mid/low/lack of budget games. So I'll probably give the long-ignored "Left Alive" a chance, especially since I'm intrigued by lore and design work from Yoji Shinkawa with overall art direction that takes too much aspects from MGS, but i dont mind it at all. So can say only - thanks again for the excellent video, purely about your personal opinion about the game, with an attempt to see positive elements even in unsuccessful projects.

Hello and thanks for the comment! I really enjoyed Alpha Protocol and I have to say, you're not even finding that here. The problem is that the gameplay was never completed, it had a bunch of underutilized ideas and there is no stealth mechanics or proper weapon use. The game was mishandled, greatly. And Alpha Protocol is WAYYYYY better. I loved that game too! It looks amazing, don't get me wrong. But it is BROKEN. Notoriously so. If you have to get it, buy it on a sale or something massive. You'll be wasting your money. Thanks for watching! And, play Alpha Protocol more instead of wasting your money and time on this if you can!

It was supposed to be a survival action game in enemy territory, then it got shifted to different engines and two other studios that were focused on mobile gaming. So, the prime reason it feels like it does was because of that. It feels more like the walking sections in Front Mission Evolved. Nothing to do with MGS. The project art and that was actually just done by the same artist but hes done loads of other things, and he designed the characters before Square even got a hold of it and changed everything.

Im guessing the company wanted yo convert FM into metal gear style game series (hence why they got the metal gear artist) But the studio probably wanted to do a fps front mission gamr but were forced to make it more like metal gear This could've worked. You can have a mecha game with fps segments. Tankers in the military arent always in their tanks. Havr the young pilot be part of the military still fighting this stronger opponent, but you get teammates that you inevitably lose in combat You have this officer, have her be part of the police wanzer division. Have her perform duties like crowd control when food riots happen as the enemies get closer. For the fugitive, have him find allies in the invading force, maybe have him be the enemy perspective. And even get to maybe fight inside the new wanzer (or fight alongside the new wanzer) Then slowly tie all their stories together as things get worse in this conflict. This couldve been good and could easily justify wanzer combat as well as Moments as the character's on the ground. But that didnt happen
@KeiNova
@KeiNova Ай бұрын
From what information I've gathered, the game was envisioned as a survival action game by the creator of Armored Core and the MGS artist. They had a small development studio they were putting together called Studio GRIT. Yoji Shinkawa developed and designed the characters before Square even came in - then it was picked up by them, Shinji Hashimoto apparently hijacked the whole thing and gave all the credit to ilinx and SE, didn't include Studio Grits involvement. And ilinx was developing it, while SE had a bunch of other departments covering other aspects. Yet, ilinx wasn't capable of making the game they wanted, and they still pumped it out with a zillion dollars of bells and whistles that meant nothing. It definitely could have worked, I really wish it did.

Honestly I don't expect any studio to do the whole story with character decisions thing, its a lot of work. And people don't actually grow just because adversity is thrown in front of them. Many people attempt to dodge it even acting out in denial or waiting it out in hopes that they can make it go away. Honestly a young mech pilot with an attitude refusing to learn any chill makes sense. You have to consider that millions of people in society live at the bottom controlled by addiction and emotion or ignorance and never get out even late in life. I didn't play it so I have no context on the rest of the chatacter. but yeah, being rigidly harsh or stupid is arguably more realistic than every character constantly being a hero of a situation and learning important lessons.

I never played this game, in spite of being a HUGE Front Mission fan, precisely because I was afraid of the eventual pitfalls that this review exposed to be pretty accurate. The sense I get from watching footage is that this game took the on-foot segments from Front Mission Evolved (which I was not a fan of) and just...stretched them out across the entire game, rather than appearing every few levels. It's like...Metal Gear Flaccid. They just kind of failed (or at least stumbled) at every step, other than the most basic plot setup. It makes me sad to see this being the current state of the franchise. Hopefully we'll get a new title that brings back the SRPG formula...sometime before I die.
@KeiNova
@KeiNova 25 күн бұрын
Honestly, I felt the same way after playing Evolved. It felt like they polished the animations, but it's all the same sort of jank. Any extended moves, like swinging on poles, is about pushing a single button when you look at it. There isn't any real interactivity. I hope you're young though - and we get lots more Front Mission games that bring back what they once were or add to what Gun Hazard was.
@BobVegan-u4t
@BobVegan-u4t Ай бұрын
I feel that the intended way to play this game was based around traps. Since players character is always outgunned, and the enemy are whole squads of soldiers in exoskeletons, traditional stealth mechanics like headshots and backstabs won't work. Besides, the game makes a big deal out of characters' goal being mere survival, not a victory of some sort. And the only way to survive is avoiding the fights, not participating in them. And if that's impossible, you have to engage in the gameplay loop of crafting various traps, placing them and then luring enemies in those traps. I think that's what the devs saw as the 'core gameplay' - not the shooting or mecha sim. I do not plan to try to proof this theory by actually playing the game myself, though.
@KeiNova
@KeiNova Ай бұрын
I think that was the idea at some point. Especially with all the open world areas and alleys you are going through - and especially the sewers. But it feels like they pushed it into a more episodic linear experience as things went on. The traps ended up being really weak and you're always forced into massive gunfights that show how bad the game is.

Ah, another mech franchises that's left to rot.. just like Muv-Luv. Even the FM3 remake looks disappointing where the wanzer is zooming at high speed completely losing the "weight" of their movement (I'm aware that the reason why FM3's wanzer moves weighty and slow was because of the hardware limitation of PS1 but come on it's iconic).

Note: This comment was reuploaded because KZbin deleted it for some reason. Any weird wording you will is because I'm trying to guess which words triggered KZbin's annoying filters. Not really related to the video or its topic, but seeing how this mecha game went from mechs to barely any, and being a stealth action game with poor stealth mechanics, made me think of Forever Winter actually. If you haven't heard of it, its a extraction stealth horror game where there is a war raging on between 2 (technically 3, but 2 are allied) terrifying superpowers, where the fighting has gone on so long that the poulaticans who started it are dead and AI is now running the show. The armies of soldiers, cyber zombies, cybernetic monsters, tanks, and mechs roll in nearly daily and engage in warfare across desolate battlefields, trenches built for mechs, and other things in a polluted hellscape reshaped nearly weekly by AI reprinters trying to recycle and remake the lost world but just making increasingly chaotic and bizarre non sense. YOU play as a rat. You're not a part of either armies trying to mardur each other, you're the random civvie scavenger caught in the crossfire between the middle. Every now and then, you have to scamper your way into this hellscape, find valuable stuff and water, then get the fuck out before someone sees you. The game has several systems built for its stealth as well as a threat assessment system where the AI will decide (if they catch or see you) whether you're the bigger threat or the mech marching towards them. Some of the designs in Left Alive actually reminds me of the designs of the Europa faction in Forever Winter, with that similar idea of a familiar horror that doesn't seem that far off.

As someone who also absolutely loved tactical games, started out with final fantasy tactics advances and advance wars the normal ways in my early childhood. and then Front missions 3 through Romstation, in my late teen days. I loved the game. I played it to no end. Years later, i discovered that armored core wanabee front mission game... i hated it. It was decent but... it really had little interest to me who loved the tactical rpg game and as you said, had my fill with AC, and also lostplanet. To me it felt like metal gear rising level of nope. And then, a decade later, a year back from now, or two? I discovered... this game. And while sure, it has little if any mech content. I honestly see absolute no issue with that what so ever, because i love the concept idea and story of the game. Survivors of a defeated country. You're not the hero here, you're just the losers trying to survive and save as many as possible. Make sense you barely get to touch the mechs. That is definitely not something that should be held against this game. Would i rather have got a new tactical game? Probably. But that's not something i think deserve to be held against this game. 3:09 honestly, would learn japanese for that, and to finally play Valkyria chronicles... 3? Or 2? The one with the prisoners that we never got to enjoy in the west because stupidity. 10:22 yeah so... i'll be honest, the gameplay isn't downright horrible. BUT GOD IS IT STUPID ON MANY ASPECTS. And not the funny type of stupid. 11:00 technically you do get a crossbow with bolts i believe you can pick up... sometimes? But yes. The lack of headshots. I can understand ennemies beeing superior technologically and having better personal armors and shit but a crossbow to the back of the head is a crossbow to the back of the bloody head... having to shoot them 3 times in quick succesdion, in the head, with the absolute crappy aiming system, less they call reinforcements or spot you is pain. Even if i'm playing the full survivor difficulty, it's just no'kay. (Also god you had to pick that one mission where i struggled a lot... to actually go for a full stealth xD, you actually can sort of go stealthy... you just really have to pick ennemies one by one from either a long distance or isolate and beat them up. You can also technically create diversions and aggro most ennemies in one area of the map... granted you survive the heat or manage to avoid it.) 13:38 now that's just bad faith there... you're running along a wall where the upper half...has you completely vissible... ain't no surprise xD not to say there arn't time where their detection ability is way too sharp but... really? 15:05 as i said earlier i disagree on that. Would i like to play wanzers a bit more? Or even have a game dedicated to it with those mechanics? (Albeit klanky actually...) yes, but that specific game not focusing on that is fine for me. 18:12 interesting that i never saw those WoT posters... might not be a thing on playstation. Honestly snipers in this game might have been the most frustrating part to me... specially in their spotting ability, like that one area where there's half a dozen of them on balconies and stuff... Funnilly enough the part where olga get the smg and we have to fight our way out... i had predicted an ambush, and already placed traps all over the place, leading to making this part quite easier ahah... relatively speaking compared to the difficulty... 19:35 wanzers are just amazing. I certainly preffer them over mechwariors designs too. AC V had some chonky designs if i remember wich i liked. 21:21 ah yes....the escorts missions... might be my biggest beef with that game. Specially when it comes to having to escort them while dealing with wanzers... like that very first time we fully pilot one... and have ti save that woman, who get obliterated by a wanzer, or get shot to death by retreating soldiers once you get into the wanzer... that part prompted me to eliminate all soldiers pre-emtively lol. 21:35 kinda sad you can't save that soldier... 22:41 that ost when you get in the wanzer tho... So yeah, personally, the game to me is worth a go even at 10 bucks. Buuuuut, god i wish they would redo it it properly.... like seriously it deserve more love. Specially story and idea wise. The idea of trully feeling powerless and scraping by to survive in an occupied country, is awesome, and in a way, you really do feel like you're not a hero that's for sure xD I think the biggest part the game need working on is the stealth and aiming. Can't say much on the gadgets, i only ever used the basic ones and maybe the RC at one point. But i enjoyed compeltely traping an area in preparation for defensive fight or ambushes.

I really appreciate your perspective on this! I can definitely see how Left Alive could click with someone who loves the themes of survival, desperation, and not being the hero for once. That idea of scraping by in an occupied country is compelling, and I agree that conceptually, there's something really strong there. If the game had been executed better-especially in terms of stealth and aiming-I think it could have been a much more engaging experience for me too. That said, I just couldn’t get past how frustrating some of the mechanics felt in practice. I don’t mind a tough game, but when difficulty comes from clunky controls and inconsistent AI rather than well-designed challenge, it really takes me out of it. I totally get that the lack of Wanzer gameplay didn’t bother you, but for me, in a Front Mission spin-off, it felt like a missed opportunity. That’s just my take, though-I’m not here to say my opinion is gospel. If the game resonated with you, that’s awesome! Honestly, I’d love to see the concept revisited in a way that does it justice. Also, yeah, those sniper sections were brutal. And I respect your patience with the escort missions-I think those were the breaking point for me.

@KeiNova i feel you on that, i had to take a break myself at that one part where we have to cross a bridge with olga, because of some stupid inconcistencies with the AI, like how i'd redo one part 3 times the exact dame way yet somehow they'd spot me at different parts each time. In fact it was the same with the escorts, like the one i mentionened, at one point i got into the wanzer, and all of a sudden, two soldiers decided to run away, aaaaaaall the way into the side street where the civie was hiding, and proceeded to kill her... like bruh? XD Honestly i agree too, it is a missed opportunity, if even for a side mode, or maybe a second game that focus more on proper Front Mission styled wanzers fighting, customization and stuff. If anything, make us play through the story from the first games. With that gameplay style, maybe have some parts where you have to dismount to go for some infantry gameplay here and there where wanzers can't get into. Arena mode too. Aaand maybe also playing as a supply truck driver *nods * And that's fair enough. Neither am i gonna impose mine, after all i'm someone who can be easily pleased by most stuff unless they're really a joke game in every aspects, if anything despite all my hate for konami and what they did, i still enjoyed what little work was put into MG survive by the former kojima members and stuff, that says a lot xD. Just sharing my view on it, and hoping some people get to understand and enjoy those aspects in spite of the bad stuff. Or at least don't shit on it as much as some others do Brutal is putting it lightly xD Yeah, i can understand breaking at the escorts totally xD All in all, i'd absolutely love for them to revisit it and polish it, it could be a gem. Much more so than that other fps they'd tried. But that's probably a slim chance of happening. Not sure what the earnings where with that game but i suspect a lot refunded it or straight up skipped on it. On a side and final note, as a fellow tactical rpg lover, i'd strongly recommend Koudelka if you never gave that a go.

@KeiNova you can start on the pc (steam) versions since they're in english. and also super robot wars games are independent of their own, like final fantasy.
