The battle against climate change is creating all-new economies and truly unique innovations. We went to a lab in Hawaii and a farm in New York to see how an unlikely pair are teaming up to fight one of agriculture's most potent problems: methane gas.

@jonathansimonds1677
@jonathansimonds1677 3 жыл бұрын
I agree that these terms can be very confusing, seaweed is in fact a type of algae! Many of the algae that we think of normally are single-celled microalgae, but there are many algae that are multicellular with differentiate tissues, scientist call these "macroalgae" but most people just call them "seaweed." There are also a few organisms that are commonly called seaweed but are not algae and are actually vascular plants, mostly sea grasses. So they're definitely not perfect synonyms, but there is a lot of overlap A. taxiformis happens to be an organism that could be correctly identified as algae and seaweed. Hope this helps! :)

I wonder if they could find the specific chemicals in the seaweed (if there are specific ones/one and not too many) that contribute to this effect of reducing methane and genetically engineer bacteria or yeast to mass produce it. Might be a more efficient/economically viable way to produce it, idk, just a thought. Anyway this is really promising for helping reduce effects of climate change if they can manage to get it used wide-scale.
