Elden Ring's design may seem outlandish, and it's certainly exaggerrated, but there is in fact a historical precedent for this kind of weapon combination. King Henry VIII was said to be an admirer of technology and had several "targets steeled with gonnes" made in the 16th century, at least some of which were used by his personal bodyguards. They also functioned as the first ballistic shields.
They were ahead of their time, particularly in that the firearm used steel cartridges! Ironically alongside match ignition without a trigger. :)
Sometimes when you think a fantasy weapon is a bit wild there just so happens to be a real counterpart in history, as weird and crazy as it may seem.

Get a free bonus pack when signing up to play War Thunder, with extra vehicles and boosters: playwt.link/skallagrim2023 [Update] A number of people are hinting at concerns about War Thunder's devs (something to do with overly aggressive pay-to-win tactics?). I was apparently ignorant of whatever is going on there, and still don't know any details. I've already committed to a total of three sponsored promos, so I'll have to do another two either way. After that I'll look into it to decide if I should decline any future offers. Generally I'm quite picky with sponsorships, but in this case I didn't find any mention of unethical practices when looking up the game. Should have researched the devs too, I guess.

The drama is really new (barely older than a week), so it is understandable if you haven't heard about it. I wouldn't call it unethical, as far as it is clearly visible to the players (no loot boxes or such), it was more a slow process of degradation of the economy, that reached a tipping point where the playerbase decided to revolt. That is not to downplay the problems of the game, I think it was a fair revolt, and hopefully will result in some long-term improvements.

Honestly I would just keep an eye on it, they're planning a big economy revision in light of the drama and if they truly wake up with this call then the base game is still genuinely so fun and impressive. I wouldn't mind if you even played it on a stream or something, it is quite accurate to history and models are beautiful. Great developers greedy publishers.

Just a cool video game idea, these would be great for smaller goblin/imp-like creatures to try and snipe at the player while being borderline impervious to return fire from the forward direction. I was a boom n' zoom champion, but now, I'm lucky to get one hit on a damn aircraft without the Pay-to-Play players smurfing me. I don't know how grindy it is now, but it took me ... 325 hours to get past the level you get the Focke Wulf 190 A-5 with. Mind you, that's 325 hours in the span of two or three years. I stopped playing in 2019. In fact, War Thunder is the game which inspired me to visit the Flying Heritage and Combat Armour Museum, in which I volunteered for 4-5 years! Many of the planes and tanks in the game are modeled after the vehicles at that museum specifically, particularly the Focke Wulf 190 D-13 (Dora). Incidentally, tomorrow is when it reopens!

Today we have ballistic shields that can deflect and stand most light gun shots, so it is not a bad idea for Police to develop gun-shields. Honestly if done right, I think a gun shield could work. It all depends on the gun type, the type and shape of the shield and wat the shield is made of. Maybe a spartan style shield, either a sawed off shotgun or two small machine pistols. U just dont wanna use a heavy metal but u want metal that is rust resistant, durable and kinda light in weight. Maybe a tower shield could work with a gun combo

Heres an idea for a gunshield unit. Triangular tower shield to maximize deflection ability while allowing you to save a bit on weight, and its shape should allow it to plant firmly in the ground. Put a large divot or trench down the middle or side for you to fit a rifle in using the shield as a brace. Should basically use it in line combat where the first rank get half shields they can crouch behind and the second rank get full shields to cover them while standing. The weight would be an issue for logistics and mobility tho.

warthunder aside, i realized workd war 1 was the reintroduction of many old ideas. armor, hand to hand fighting, and gun shields. on gun shields, its also interesting to see them constantly getting disregarded only for troops on the field to request them as an upgrade. world war 1 had sniper gun shields, world war 2 saw them reintroduced on armoured vehicles like the sdkfz 251 and jgdpz 38(t), notably missing on the M4 sherman, and also widely used on field guns, armoured cav early in vietnam had M113s with a bare .50 cal on top, soon to be upgraded with a gun shield, then an open turret. repeat in Afghanistan and Iraq where humvees were unarmoured and there were no gunshields, and after a lot of pushing by troops, they were uparmoured and given gun shields. today, gun shields are unanimously agreed to be a good idea

@RyzawaVT
@RyzawaVT Жыл бұрын
@@Skallagrim *TL;DR:* They increased repair costs, then reverted it due to backlash, but the players had enough of the recent p2w nature of the game and are boycotting further for the economy to be more fair. The drama is being used as a good tool to balance the economy & gameplay despite the reversion; which is deemed as not enough. The game had the biggest review bombing I have seen in a long while as well and even the game veterans and content creators are fighting back. *The Long Story:* They yet again increased the repair costs of most vehicles. Meaning you have to basically have a premium account AND sometimes even premium vehicles, to make a reasonable profit from your average match. If you died often because of bad teams or you're just a new/casual player, you often lost a considerable amount. Usually premium vehicles are also strong or sometimes straight up overpowered, you could also buy top tier premiums which kind of defeats the point of grinding to the top in the first place. That's not to mention how expensive top tier vehicles are to get and how long it takes to get them. By the time you finally got to top tier you wouldn't be able to afford them once researched and using those top tier vehicles resulted in a net loss more than low & mid tier vehicles. So you got a slap in the face for finally reaching the top as the rewards stop scaling and repair costs kept scaling. You either buy premium content or stick to low & mid tier in order to somewhat reliably profit. Essentially people got tired of the p2wifying of the main currency and this latest economy change was the last straw and now people are demanding a more fair economy. Luckily the changes were reverted and Gaijin seems to be listening & planning big changes, but the community has a hard time trusting them due to their past controversies (albeit not as huge). Their greed used to not be as bad a few years ago despite the game being way smaller back then. There's a reason why many players have thousands of hours in this game and it's not just because of the grind. The game itself is truly impressive, the actual developers are talented but the marketing team is predatory. Which leads me to believe that despite the playerbase being ~4x larger than it was before the pandemic, that there must be either some company bloating, absurd investor expectations, or Gaijin has gotten too confident in their ability to make money. Lastly I will say it's really an amazing game if the devs were less greedy and more keen on balancing the economy AND gameplay, p2w aspects aside it's truly one of a kind!

If you think the steel matchlock cartridges are cool, there is a quick reloading naval swivel gun that used cartridges that looked like cast iron coffee mugs. The mug would be loaded with powder and ball, then the mugs would be wedged into the open breech and fired using the standard match method.

Gun-shield?? Next you're gonna tell me that guns and pikes were once used in formation together.

Handgonnes(sp), the first "practical" firearms were basically pikes with a barrel strapped to the end of them, so its likely they were used with formations of "conventional" pikemen.

Just wanted to say, great eye (Or one-eye. Hehe.) with regards to the weight. The shield's exact weight in-game is 20.5, and since Japan uses the Metric system, that's most likely kilograms.

feels like they should have just made a shield that jabs into the ground with a spike or something then acts as a support to rest the gun on for stability... that would have been more practical.. it would be heavy but you could probably carry it on your back holding the carrying a reifle in hand while moving.. then unslung the shield stick it in the ground and start shooting... idk.. seam like that would make more sense if you wanna combine a shield with a refile.. might even make sense if you know your gonna be fighting somewhere very flat wiothout any cover and where tranchworks may not be practical... like idk how easy it would be to make trenches in a desert or something like that where the ground cover may be several layer of sand... not that deserts are all sand but well if you do end up fighting somewhere like that...

Not a gun shield as such, but Guild Wars 2 is one of the few games that lets you wield a gun and a shield at the same time. Of course as with games usually, you can't block at the same time as you shoot, but I would definitely like to see that in more games.
