Thanks, glad it helped answer some questions. And I have no doubt some people will find kilts weird, but on the street I get tons of positive comments, especially from women who think it looks great. We should all really dress to impress ourselves and not society anyway so I encourage people not to worry about what others think. And it’s a good thing we don’t all like the same thing or life would be terribly boring, LOL. Thanks for your polite statement, and take care. Guy

I stripped my mom's front door someone painted it with oil paint (white) I told my mom its not for that door it had a strong smell. so I stripped it took me two days both sides. Then primed it (2 coats) made sure prime worked like paint and covered well then used paint n primer paint from Berh many people were very surprised they thought I used an airless paint sprayer but used roller and brush. It's all because of good quality primer the primer is the true hero, lets stop being lazy with the idea of paint n primer and due the job once and right.

Very well explained.. thank you for sharing. I am going to paint next month for the first time and the wall colour in my bedroom 1 is orange and bedroom 2 is blue (on darker side).. I went to Home Depot today and showed the current pictures. I was advised to go for Behr paint+primer with 2 coats and can avoid primer and then paint route. I am not 100% sure if I will get the promising results with Behr primer+paint since I have dark colours at the moment. I will really appreciate your expert advise on this. Thanks a ton! Nicky

If I'm changing a wall colour from light to dark I have the primer tinted in the direction of the new darker colour. A deep blue, a hunter green or a burgundy just isn't as rich when applied over a white primer such as Kilz 2. I've never had a paint store refuse to tint the primer.

I tend to overbuild. lightly sanded previous owner's paint, cleaned with TSP solution. patched walls. 1 coat of spot priming my patches/fixes. 2 full coats of primer. 2 full coats of paint. light sanding between each coat. benefit of homeowner diy is you can wait out proper cure time for each coat. there is no place in my life for "all in one paint" and primer.

Am using white. How to tell the difference between the first and second coate of primer and paint. Thought of using chalk powder on first coat but that would mess up the paint when I go over it. Any clues? The rest of my projects will be using a lighter primer and darker paint. So, what to do about white?

Thank you for your videos. I have learned a lot. I have 2 questions. First I have a house full of paneling that needs painting. What are the secrets to painting paneling? What primer and paint would you use? What are the best ways to fix nail holes? Question # 2 is what is the best way to blend paint? In one video you said you were going to make a video about this. Thanks again for your videos.
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 6 жыл бұрын
To paint paneling, is similar to painting walls. Make sure the walls are clean and not covered in an oily film or anything. If in doubt, wash with TSP or something similar. Then use a stainblocking primer such as Bullseye 123 since you are covering darker paneling most of the time and it's a stained wood and can bleed through non stainblocking primers. Then just a good quality paint like Sherwin Williams superpaint. To fix nail holes, watch my video at: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZnSygHlpd9yagas Blending paint is fairly simple. First off, try to use the original matching paint. If none available, I recommend Sherwin Williams as they are usually much better at matching paint and can manually tweak it if the computer isn't perfect. Other places usually can't. Then realize that paint matches are not always perfect, since paint can have slightly different sheen levels between brands, and it can just not match. Best bet is always to paint an entire wall or ceiling. But if you have to blend, then first prime it well. I like Glidden gripper as it looks like it painted when done and seals great. If in doubt, use 2 coats of primer and let it dry properly, then 2 coats of paint. Using cheap primer or paint is a guarantee of flashing or not blending. Also try to not leave abrupt paint blend lines. Finally, you need to know that flat paint blends best. The higher the sheen, the less you can blend it without it showing. Hope that helps. Let me know what you end up doing, and thanks for stopping by and subscribing. Take care, Guy

I only primer over raw drywall, stains or colors that bleed through like reds. If it's a neutral color you can just paint over it. Note that some paint colors may require 3-4 coats to get the full coverage, especially reds and some dark blues.

thank you great video. what do you think about the adhesion on paint and primer in one versus apart. for exterior wood you think it will seal the same??
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 6 жыл бұрын
The paint with primer is great, used in the right ways. For exterior wood, I'd still prime. Primer has a dedicated purpose of high adhesion and sealing. Paint with primer won't work as well. I also would prime, then paint for new construction. BUT I know of a painting company here in Colorado who paints all the Safeway store remodels all over the state, and they use nothing but paint with primer with no problems, so it can work, but the walls are also mostly all high as the lower sections are covered in protective materials. So if you need max adhesion, or the best sealing, use primer first. What part of the world are you in anyway? Thanks for stopping by and hope you can share a video or two.

If you are talking about wallpaper, that’s something I’ve never done. But I do know you should never put wallpaper directly over drywall without putting a sizing product on the wall. I would go to somewhere like Sherwin Williams and ask them your question.

I wanted to keep wood grain on painted cabinets. I sanded them with 80, 120, 220. I then painted with Behr urethane alkyd cabinet and trim paint, 3930, and did 3 coats. I still had the wood grain using a dark navy blue color. Problem, after 1 month of curing, it can be peeled off with fingernail. So I now realize I need a primer to get paint to stick. I have stripped them back past starting paint. I think previous paint was oil. How can I use primer to make paint stick without losing wood grain?
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 4 жыл бұрын
This one is tricky. I've never painted cabinets with the intention of the wood grain showing through. Here's how I paint them. I clean them thoroughly with TSP, Krud Kutter or something similar. Then I sand them thoroughly to scuff them up so the paint stays stuck better. Then I prime with a high bond primer like Bullseye 123. Then 2 coats of cabinet paint from Sherwin Williams. But that mostly hides the grain. Only way I know of other than that is to strip them completely, then use a white semi transparent stain, or something similar. I would talk to the folks at Sherwin Williams, not the big box stores, and get there advice on the proper finish to achieve that.

Question to new drywall installed if i sand a bunch down and it shows pits and lines in my drywall after 2 to 3rd coat do I need to fix it or will primer cover that up? Also I’m trying to get better at feathering the knife but it takes practice. I’m having a lot of drywall paper kinda score looking not torn just kinda looks rough around the jointed parts? Am I ready for primer or does it need more attention with the joint compound?

Great Tutorials all around. Thank You that kilted guy! I've came across other videos stating that paint and primer in one is just a marketing tactic. There really isn't such thing as an all-in one paint PLUS primer. It's actually just a thicker paint. So rather than waste money on buying a bunch of gallons of that to cover. I'd suggest just priming first with a good primer. Then finish with the final color of paint of your choosing. 😁

To get rid of smoke stained walls, the first thing is to clean the walls with something like TSP, or Krud cutter, etc. Then prime it with a stain blocking primer and you should be ready for paint. Hope that helps.

I’ve been painting since 1978 and have seen and used just about all materials old and new solvent and water base , worked on older homes to multiple million dollar homes . It seems with the cost of all construction materials and labor drastically going up , there will be some people trying to take short cuts and I think the paint manufacturers might be trying to take advantage this with the Paint and Primer products. These might work on previously paint surfaces but I definitely wouldn’t use it on a newly textured new drywall just for the adhesion factor . Don’t go cheap , use PVA with half tint of your top coat .Some paint companies have always pointed this out only to use the half tint and not the full tint because it will affect the quality and adhesion of the PVA primer . On previously painted deep base colors and smoke damage walls I will use a good flat stain blocking primer before applying finish top coat or coats .

Eggshell or Semi gloss, which better in Paint + Primer
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 4 жыл бұрын
Lower sheen hides minor defects better, and is much easier to spot blend in paint when doing spot repairs. Higher sheen resists smudging and holding onto stains. Higher sheens also resist moisture better, so are better for high humidity areas. Otherwise, it's mostly a matter of what appeals to you. The norm is lower sheen on walls, flat or eggshell on ceilings and semi gloss or gloss on trim.

I’ve got a video about halfway shot and will put it out in the next week or two about painting drywall repairs. In my earlier days I painted many of them and they often would show even though the texture matched. I found the only solution to guarantee it blends well is to prime the repair with one good solid coat, let it dry properly, then spot paint the repair, let it dry for hours or more, and then repaint the entire wall. I will explain more in my video.

I'm not at all impressed with paint with primer...specifically, Behr. I did two wooden garage doors and the overhead framing structure of my deck with this stuff. Two years later, both needed painting again. So I did it the old-fashioned way, primed the existing surface and exposed wood (Zinnser primer) and then painted (Benjamin Moore). Three years later, they still look great.

I was not at all impressed with the way the paint flowed and when I spoke with a store salesperson, they told me that I was wrong to use a 1/2 nap roller on a standard orange peel texture. I've been doing this a long time and really didn't have much trouble prior to these combination paint products coming out.

I will point out that although I show how the paint with primer covers really well, I would STILL put a primer on first, for anything like raw wood, new drywall, etc. But for painting over existing paint with some minor scuffing, discoloration, etc, or over a smaller repair, the paint with primer should work fine. The advantage to priming first is that primer is made specifically to adhere better, and to seal better, so you'll always get the best long term results on larger projects by priming first, and then painting.

The previous owner of our house painted 2-in-1 primer paint over bare drywall in a bedroom (found the leftover pail in the storage room). When I was prepping the room for a colour change, it started to peel. And kept peeling. We ended up peeling all the paint off to the bare drywall. Cheap junk product!

@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY Would neglect to wipe off the drywall dust after sanding cause the same level of peeling?
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 3 жыл бұрын
There's a lot that can cause it. Not cleaning the walls first (although it's not always needed, but if it it, and you don't, it won't stick well), too much humidity in the air, improper drying time (too fast or slow), painting over a gloss paint without sanding and/or cleaning it first, dust left on the wall, etc. So if you don't prep a wall right, you risk failure. That's why I don't believe in messing with the manufacturers recommendations.

Bottom line DIYers...so-called “Paint plus Primer” is a clever marketing term, but in reality all they do is add a small amount of a bonding agent to regular paint. It helps with ADHESION, if you’re covering existing painted surfaces , but does nothing for stain blocking. On new work the best practice is always prime first. On old work where you have water stains, sap knots, rust streaks, markers, whatever else...at least spot prime the stains with BIN or KILZ...preferably the real shellac based stuff, and I’d always hit the stains twice before top coating. BTW there is no such thing as “one coat coverage”.Two light coats are far superior to one heavy one. Don’t take shortcuts.

I will give you this advice. In all of my years of doing this I would say 98% of painters prime all new surfaces before painting them. But I once encountered a contractor who painted all of the Safeway stores when they remodeled and they used paint only and applied it in two coats. I still would prime first and then paint partly because it’s cheaper and primer is a little better at sticking to things and sealing surfaces.

Your test was bad, as super paint was yellow, a darker color will cover a lighter color. More or less your primer should of been tinted to be fair.
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 4 жыл бұрын
Actually that's a misconception. Here's some information as to why that is. "Lighter color paints use a white base and darker color paints use a clear base. After a paint base color is chosen, the color pigmentation is added in. How does this explain why your paint didn’t cover? The key ingredient for ultimate paint coverage is titanium dioxide. This naturally-occurring chemical is a fine powder that adds a white, durable pigmentation that is used in products from sunscreen to cosmetics. For the painting world, white or light bases use higher levels of titanium dioxide, which helps lighter color paints, such as our “White Fence” to apply opaque with less coats. However, clear bases contain little to no titanium dioxide. This means bold colors, such as our “Best of the Bunch” will require multiple coats to appear opaque."
