The first step to any painting project is preparation. having a good sanding and priming job is the beat way to guarantee you will be happy with the finished ceiling.
In order to apply primer you must remember to apply pressure in order to push the paint into the drywall and then lightly back roll to remove extra paint from the surface.
After you have primed I always suggest you sand with a 220 grit sandpaper to ensure any defects have been removed.
The secret to a great ceiling painting job is to paint the first and second coats in opposite directions. This will enable you to have perfect paint coverage and to finish rolling in the same direction as the sun coming into the room.
Always do a light sanding in between every coat of paint. On a ceiling I suggest using a flat paint with no acrylic additive. This gives you great coverage and reduces the chance of seeing the paint lines after you are done. It also helps you do touch up work without seeing the new work.
When painting a ceiling always remember to use a long painting pole and keep your hands below your heart. This will help fight against fatigue and make the job much easier.
The secret to a perfect ceiling paint finish is to cut and roll while keeping the leading edge of the paint wet so that everything can melt together.

Quick tip, if you are priming your ceiling and walls with the same paint, use a little 4 inch rollers for your corners, you can get right into the corner, gives you a roller finish instead of brush and its 3 times quicker.

I've been a DIY painter since my teen years and always washed down the walls before painting. So my question is, after using your 360 sander on the ceilings or walls, do you have to wipe it down before rolling the paint?

You're a very good teacher. Explain why some things must be done, make process easy to understand and additional effort worth a while. I did quite some work in my life already, live in Europe so some things differ, but I still like watching your videos for those small details that make a difference. And a bit of humor coming with it ;) Thanks!

One is never to old or experienced in their trade to learn. You are a good teacher. No painter wants to jump out of bed and paint ceilings all day. It is painful no matter what size pole one uses. As for the direct sunlight issue in your teachings, you are 100% correct. I see this mistake time and time again on ocean front properties where the light bounces off the water from the sun. One can see roller marks and shadows all over the ceiling if it is rolled out in the wrong direction.

I really enjoy your videos. They are informative, clear and concise with everything beginners and even advanced decorators need to know. I am currently redecorating my home in China, and after hiring a team of local contractors to do some of the work for me, I was left a little more than disappointed. So I decided to take the work on myself. Your videos have helped me a lot. From framing in the basement, to kitchen remodelling. Thank you and keep up the good work.

Thank you Jeff for all you do. What do you do after sanding the first coat of primer? Do you brush off or do anything to get rid of the dust created? What about a treatment in between final coats? What is the in between and prep before you roll on a layer of paint or primer. I think that should be included in your video if possible.

I remember working manual labor when in high school and college. I remember feeling like that when my entire body was seized up and not working yet the next day I had to haul 40 cubic yards of dirt or do some other ridiculous landscaping job. Only option was to force the body to go to work. I dont miss those days at all, however it gives you an inner resilience that can not be matched.

Hi Jeff. Follow up question. I’m having trouble getting a good finish on a ceiling I’ve done 3 coats on and finely sanded between. I’m getting streaks and patchy areas, painting white on white. I think the problem is, I’m struggling to see where I’ve painted and with applying even amounts of paint on all areas. Have you ever encountered this problem and any tips please? Many thanks .

If the ceiling you’re painting is much longer than you can reach, would you split the area into two and just paint each section to a point where you can reach or would you just walk the entire length of the room in one hit?

One thing I would add; use a primer-sealer that is actually white when painting ceilings. That Kilz stuff is not white, it is a tad grey and can be difficult to cover with ceiling paint (depending on the quality of the ceiling paint). Spend a few extra bucks on your primer, it is the foundation of your paint job. Benjamin Moore's super spec enamel undercoat primer-sealer gives good results on ceilings.

The reason my comment came to mind is a job I did for a friend in which he went to Home Depot and bought kilz to primer seal a freshly done ceiling with stepped bulkheads. He also bought their cheapest ceiling paint. The kilz was a tad grey and the crappy ceiling paint wouldnt cover the greyness. If there is anything I can't stand in this business, it is when the customer controls the product used.

Hi Ron a little out of my tool box, however I am trying to organize a few trips in order to cover some of these types of questions from different building materials around the continent. Cheers!

What do you think of the rollers that store the paint inside? Also what is an average price for hiring someone to paint a 9 foot ceiling that is about 12' x 11'? Thanks for your tips on How to paint a ceiling.

Video is good . I just want to point this out - some time you use your professional painter Jargon which is difficult for me to understand. The rest is all good. Now what is primal phase of the paint . Is it a different paint or first paint phase???

When you cut a ceiling do you just go quick into the joint of the wall and ceiling because you know you’ll be painting the wall later? Or do you need to cut a straight line on the ceiling so as not to get any white on the wall ?

What do you use to remove the sanding dust from the ceiling?

We use chb from Sherwin or is300 dead flat Behr frokm home depot. Just make sure to ask if it's a dead flat because most flat paints have a little shine to them which is no good for ceilings

I hear compound dust stays in the lungs permanently but I noticed no dust mask - is this less of an issue as they say?

After sanding the 1st coat, do you clean off the ceiling before applying coat #2?

You should ALWAYS get a brand new roller slightly damp with water before getting it into the paint---it will hold the paint better and not get clogged as quickly.

Jeff please help! I am a Disabled Combat Veteran. I live in Augusta GA. (it is way warmer down here by the way.) I NEED HELP! LOT OF HELP Covid was not good to me. The isolation, break in routine and schedule I was a mess and went a little, a lot crazy. Knocked down walls started many projects finished... not many well none really . I tried everything. Asking the people who seem to always question" why I try to do it all myself. Swiping right on Tinder based on the trade and not the my standard height requirement. Hiring contractors. I do receive a retirement check and could have paid for the work I need done. Some jobs, despite your amazing instruction require an extra set of hands, additional power tools and well a basic understanding and construction experience. I've no real support structure here and well... Im not sure what to do. For the last year your channel has encouraged and inspired me. So much so that I may, I have bitten off way more than I can chew. You haven yet to make a video yet for what I have happening here : ( Thank you for what your do and hope one day I can send you a video of some of my completed projects.

Do you have a video on your sexy ceiling? You mentioned it on your painting wall video and I was hoping it was in the ceiling video. I'm painting my ceiling today and I was hoping i can incorporate the sexy ceiling look into it.

A note about the primer. There are primer products that are designed just for sheetrock. What makes them special. They have an added substance to make the wall completely uniform over tape lines and sheetrock paper. So when you paint you will not see any differences in overall looks. I personally did not believe it. I bought a gallon and sure enough. It really made a world of difference.

drywall primer with a high level of solids is a great product. there are many on the market which are lousy. That is why I never buy my paint from the box stores. Cheers!
