Today I finally release my Engin Cycles shop tour with Drew Guldalian! Drew was nice enough to give me this tour back in November when I visited for the Philly Bike Expo. He has the coolest bicycle framebuilding shop I've ever seen.
Here are the two podcast episodes I mentioned in the video:
• Ep. 9 with Brian Chapman (Chapman Cycles): cobraframebuilding.com/podcas...
• Ep. 11 with Drew Guldalian (Engin Cycles): cobraframebuilding.com/podcas...
Drew not only has several dedicated horizontal and vertical mill setups for different steps in the framebuilding process, he also has a Sputnik frame jig, multiple CNC machines, lathes, and all kinds of other little machines and tools.
If you want some inspiration for what a fully built out framebuilding shop can look like, I think Drew's shop is one of the best places to look. So stoked I got to record this shop tour!

What I love about the biking community(generally because it has its outliers) is the openness with knowledge and the camaraderie in sharing knowledge...This is really good shit man!!!

I am so glad that you are liberating this knowledge. I went to UBI oh man, 15+ years ago, and spent a bunch of years working in a shop. I wanted to build frames but back then it was building a frame was something you had to learn from a mentor, and depending on where you lived like central Alberta was never going to find one.

The 2 phase power comment sent me down a rabbit hole. I thought we only had single and 3 phase distribution. I was wrong.

Also had me thinking as well ?? 2 Phase Never heard of it. We have either Single phase which is around 240 Volt, and 3 Phase which is around 415 Volt in general use but of course it goes way higher. Happy i have 3 Phase in my home shop. Definitely comes in handy when buying decent workshop equipment.

crazy idea: could manual shaping of the joint profiles be made easier by projecting geometry on the tube with a diy telecentric projector, so you see your target while the tube remains in the vice? (these are funky optics that make the light-beam come out completely parallel so you get the same size and shape image projecting from 5 inches as you get from 50 inches see "applied science hypercentric optics")

Dude, going back to your own shop tour...I'm assuming 'Clausing' is the re seller or agent? Because your band saw is an exact replica of an Addison original design, and your lathe is a Colchester 'Storm' . Just interested as both those models and brands are/were UK Oem. Is 'Clausing' an American importer/reseller? Either which way, quality machine tools...

Are you related to Mr Steele? The Drone Pilot/Vlogger? If he had a long lost son you would be him lol. He's an awesome dude and one of my favourite KZbinrs, so I'm not trying to be insulting or anything like that trust me. Look him up, you look just like him during his younger days, lol.

Ok hold on.. ive been watching a lot of bicycle videos lately and i cant help but wonder how is it so complicated and precise ? Dont get me wrong i can appreciate that kind of work but whats the point of being 0.0001 precise on a bike that'll go 20mph.. we have this kind of precision on motorcycles, engines and frame alignment but the lack of precision would be a much bigger feel at 60 on a highway full of pot holes and semi.. no ?
@aygwm
@aygwm 2 жыл бұрын
Precision is always the aim with any machine work because the errors compound as you start fitting pieces together.
@brandyquad
@brandyquad 2 жыл бұрын
When working with thin wall tubing, the fitment matters a lot more than if you're working with some .120" or even .095 wall. Also, the custom bike community appreciates precise welds, and an overall well built bike. Also, titanium does not have the same characteristics as 4130. You want a tight fitup to keep your purge as good as possible. Bridging a gap makes for brittle welds. It's also really easy to get lack of fusion with titanium, so you want to get a fit that's good enough that you can run a fusion pass, then cap it with filler. Keeps heat down, and strength up.
@jimiandrix
@jimiandrix 2 жыл бұрын
@@brandyquad i understand, it does makes sense, and i do appreciate the good work But again.. im wondering if its really necessary to use aircraft specs for a bicycle. Now your point about titanium does makes sense but not all bikes are made out of it, but the precision seems to be maintained
