Definitely do the expanded metal behind the window - I’d do sheet metal below, and I also vote for another set of full taillights in the headache rack/roll cage as well - they look cool and it’s added visibility, especially if your towing something that blocks sight of your lower taillights. I also think a marker light on the side of your taillight housings would be a nice touch…

i was thinking the same thing, safety is always #1 when working with steel cables, and the added benefit of having a place to store bungees and even some light general purpose chains for rigging, cant wait to see her choochin' under her own power, and she should be a good capable rig, afterall the first iteration of it was pretty capable, so anything done should improve upon what as already there

I believe the mesh to be a strong safety point. That being said, if you do use it, I would suggest you bend a covering for the entire outside of it. I used to shear tons of it. Very easy to rip or completely tear you up. If you had to reach near it in that small space damage to the reacher would show a lot of blood‼️

@@dannop2562 haven't seen many windows taken out. But have watched a few friends narrowly avoid death with snapped atv winch lines. There’s no worries about that because there really thick cables and nothing he puts on there will be heavy enough to snap them and the rope they use with the kinetic energy will never break there rated for some serious tension same goes for the rope in the winch more then strong enough to withstand whatever it’s used on the mesh would make it extremely difficult seeing when towing trying to see what height the vehicle is at for whatever obstacles or when backing up you want as much visitation as possible I could see if he we’re putting stuff in the bed that might slide then it would be great I like you’re thinking tho don’t get me wrong

Definitely use the expanded metal to protect the back window! I had a square body with a flatbed, the headache rack had expanded metal and it did offer versatility and protection! (Multiple times! ) Just put it on the bed side, not the cab side and if you make frames as panels, try to make them removable or hinged you'll be happier due to the fact that you will then be able to clean the back window! Otherwise you'll wish you would've! Love what y'all got goin' on, keep up the awesome work!

Definately add the mesh. There are so many winches and stuff in the back, that the risk to breaking a rear window is high. Plus it will stop rocks that may accidentally on purpose be thrown across your yard. Hey Paul , I actually make that ( mesh ) you are thinking of using in the back window , it's called expanded metal , and the stuff your using is called 3/4-9 flat expanded metal , from what I can tell by watching the video anyways . Just a little knowledge I thought would share with you guys ☺️ haha . Love what you guys do and the atmosphere in your shop ! Keep it up guys God Bless ! P.S. as far as visibility goes definitely without but if you want protection from flying debris or something snapping and flying back then I would go for it . If your not picky on the sizing of the holes and would like it a bit bigger for better viewing capability , try looking for some 1-1/2-9 flat expanded metal at a steel service centre, if I was closer to you guys I would get you some for free but I'm in Ontario Canada lol . Would give you bigger openings and better visibility but still nice and strong for protection . In my opinion if you could get your hands on the 1-1/2-9 flat expanded metal then I would prefer you have it on there for added protection 👍 and better viewing Now that being said if it does not bother you looking through the 3/4-9 flat then by all means use it , just means it will stop smaller pieces of debris 👍 Hope this helps !

Put the mesh in Paul.....you never know when a tow rope or cable might let loose and bust your windows or hurt anyone in the cab for nothing. Great content. Thanks. from Canada's capital. cheers.

Mesh for safety. Enjoy watching you guys put the puzzle together with skillful fabricating. Thanks Paul for explaining your steps and keeping so patient and cool. When I work on stuff I often get grumpy and growl when things don't fit or work out. Watching you I'm learning to take it easy and enjoy more. So good role modeling there;)

I hope you remembered to drill those water leak out holes under the tailights. Some great looking sheet metal work. Ben did an amazing job on those front crazy bending ones.

Also, add a rubber drip nipple (like in the bottom of a refrigerator) to let water out but not allow stuff to get in.

Start using simple nylon string for those crazy sheet metal builds. You can tie off a "bend" in the sheet metal that you want in between two bars, and then are about to ish measure from that piece of string. Makes those complex joints up front that Ben did A WHOLE lot easier to comprehend how much you need/or cut off. Food for thought.

go with 1. Mesh in, only because it is a work truck and if those cables ever let go and fly back, it could save the glass. And you will make it look great :D Looks amazing so far, can not wait to see it working.

Paul, i enjoy your workmanship, humor, expertise, family life, adventures, etc. i vote yes for the mesh, but your idea for an angle iron frame in each opening sounds like a lot of work. if you cut cardboard templates for each opening, cut the mesh to shape and tacked it in. ...it would probably be good enough. keep up the good work!

Since you have hydraulics on this truck, will you have outriggers or hydraulic stabilizer feet of some kind? I think they would be very cool and get used a lot for off road recoveries especially for heavy vehicles down in a ditch. I know you can anchor to trees and rocks like Rory and Matt do, but for the wrecker olympics it would be something they don't have. I have seen some nice compact outriggers on small bobcat backhoes. They would be relatively easy to add. Even one hydraulic cylinder in the center like a tow truck stinger would be cool. Thanks for keeping your channel real. Nice clean entertainment from your family to thousands....

Yes on the mesh, it's a tow truck which uses chains, cables and lots of tension with short occurances of impacts added to the tension...something could become a projectile when Murphy takes the reigns. Good stuff all you guys! This interests me because I'm making an all-aluminum camper on a '01 F550 4x4 chasis. It has two modes, tavel mode and camp mode. Camp mode expands up and out with pie shaped sections pivoting out so the width at the back end goes from 7ft to 13ft and the height over the cab goes from 4ft to over 6ft high. All woodwork inside. It even has radiant heated floors. You guys are a good inspiration. Keep it going!

Yes on the mesh, if anything snaps on a pull it will head straight towards the cab. I think it also adds some good looks for the wrecker as well

When it comes to the back window my suggestion would be to take advantage of your fancy plasma table and make some type custom mesh with your logo or cool shapes or something instead of plain ol’ expanded metal.

I like it with the mesh. You'll have a lot more protection from anything coming in the rear window. On another note do you plan on getting a sheet metal roller & english wheel for shaping sheet metal. It would really expand your fabricating skills & you would be able to do more shapes & curves. I love everything y'all do & I've learned a ton from y'all! Thanks so much for having such an awesome family oriented channel!!

Absolutely add the expanded metal/mesh on the back. It will atleast slow down anything flying toward the back of your head. Cables don't break as often as chains do but they still can.

As others have already said, do the expanded sheet steel on the rollbar framework. I would however put it on the backside toward the boom and then frame it with some 16ga flat bar for a finished look. The wrecker is looking good. The imagineering and fabrication is second to none of both you and Ben.
