The Canucks goaltending tandem has been an important component, too. Demko was basically hurt the entire year last season. He might not look crazy flashy every game this year, but that's because his positioning and anticipation has been very, very good. It undoubtedly helps the confidence of the players in front of him. And DeSmith has been a major upgrade over Martin and Delia. They don't have to work Demko into the ground just to have the slightest hope. And again, the players in front can play with some confidence that either of their goalies can backstop them if the other team breaks through. Like, seriously, what might Edmonton be like if they had Demko and DeSmith instead?
@trevortamboline2797 ай бұрын
Oh man... I've said the same thing to friends! The Oilers with Demko would be frightening... but luckily he's ours. 😉
@SilverThePeacemaker6 ай бұрын
The Oilers need to build a solid D first, or no goaltender will change their outcome.
@ironseguin98386 ай бұрын
It wouldnt matter who is in the Oilers' net with them playing less than zero defence. They could have Dominik Hasek in net for them and he would still put up shaky stats simply because they provide zero help. They allow more high danger chances than they can count and have taken a meh defensive system and somehow made it worse for themselves. Their goalies may let in the odd goal here and there but the majority of goals are piss poor defence. This sounds wild coming from me as a Canuck fan because our defence has been ass under Benning's entire tenure, it was pretty meh under Green, it had a bright spot under Boudreau and Brad Shaw but Shaw left to be with Torts and Bruce was fired and now Tocchet is here. He has the team playing a much more committed style of defence and its making less work for Demko and De Smith. In the 11 games this year, Vancouver has allowed more than 30 shots only 5 times as far as I am aware. Normally theyd be allowing 30-40 shots a night and some pretty grossly dangerous ones to boot.

Subbing out Horvat for Hronek has done wonders for this team. Their defensive core top to bottom is far superior to anything they've had in close to a decade now.

Maybe not a real contender this year, but definitely good enough to make the playoffs and show Petey the team is good enough to at least give themselves a shot. Which is the most important part if we don't want to lose the guy. The Canucks have the most important positions filled; # 1D, # 1C, and a very good Starter who's shown good work in the playoffs. I think to be a real SC contender they'll need to have some hits from the draft, so they can get good value on ELCs, especially with that OEL buyout taking up 4.7mil in cap in 25/26 and 26/27. As well as continue to find good cheap depth players to replace the ones who price themselves out. Get to the playoffs and you never know though.

Vancouver has the 3 main ingredients needed (at a minimum) to be a serious playoff contender: a solid if not spectacular goaltender, a stellar no. 1 center, and a monster on the blue line. It looks as though Vancouver may very well be a force with whom to reckon this season.

The Canucks have a superstar in each position right now. Pettersson, Hughes, and Demko, this is the foundation of every dynasty throughout history, a superstar in each position of the ice. This is something none of the other Canadian teams currently have, and this is really good because these players are still young and just entering their prime. This team has the potential to not only win a Stanley Cup in the near future, but also create a dynasty, the pressure is on the GM to make sure they’re ready for playoffs.

@@halfcabmelancholVery few teams actually have the foundations for a dynasty right now. The Dallas Stars with Robertson Heiskenen Jake Oettenger is the closest example. You could also say Panarin Fox Shesterkin but that’s a much older aged trio than what the Canucks have. As a Canucks fan im excited because of the young age of this trio. Demko, 27yo, Hughes 24yo, Pettersson 24yo. These players are just entering their prime years. It really does have the foundations for a dynasty when you think about it.

They have the skill and the key pieces, and now they have a coach that is focusing them better, that's why they are getting the results. I have definitely enjoyed their current play style this far. A lot of effort through all periods, in most of the games. They are entering the zone a lot better this season. I don't really like that dump and chase tactic that they were using for a long time, they don't have the size for that kind of game, but they have the skill and speed to carry it in. Even though I'm a BC guy, the Canucks have always been my "other team". I've seen something really different from the past this year, even compared to them at their best. The team has always had this habit of falling apart in the third period, giving up leads, basically if they weren't solidly ahead after two periods I'd expect them to lose, but I'm not seeing that. They're finishing games strong, and it actually feels like there's some fight in them when they're behind. I hope they keep this up and at least make the playoffs.

As of today, they are 9-2-1, their best start in franchise history. Having the number in points, the number one defenceman and five of the top twenty-five point scorers on the team is helping. Making Hughes captain was genius and has helped his game immensely; he’s become a more confident and responsible player because of it. My usual complaint was that he could be a liability to the team but I have to say, I haven’t seen that at all from him so far this year. A lot can be said positively of their coaching staff, too.

At least in regular season, looks to be promising!

i live in ottawa and know people inside the league that have stated numerous times that a canadian team will never compete for a title again because its not financially viable to the leagues success. those same people said the 2015 blue jays were stopped by umpires after taking orders from the commissioner. its been going on since the flames no goal that cost them a cup. its just not good for the league. the raptors won the title by accident with kawhi leonard joining due to 2 major injuries to the warriors and there was such little faith in them ever competing again that kawhi left for the clippers after winning finals mvp. for the oilers, leafs or canucks to ever win they would need their opponents to lose their top goalie and playmaker basically. i'm not holding my breath

This version of the Canucks is a playoff calibre team. If they can stay healthy and don't lose the current narrative of tenacity and accountability, they'll make the PS and might win a round or two. But getting to the Finals involves beating both LA and Vegas and that will be a big challenge. For now, it's probably best to enjoy the moment and hope they can sustain the intensity. But they showed excellent discipline and adherence to the system in their chess match with the wiley Stars, and came away with a 2-0 victory on the shoulders of Mount Demko. Fingers crossed.
