@@envy3436 If you have a prusa XL then sure. But if you're using an AMS, it's going to switch at least twice every single layer and that will take an obscene amount of time. I've used that trick a few times and I've never had supports fail. I'd rather take my chances than have prints take double the time because of the extra filament swamps

Removing support that easy is the best feeling ever. The route I'm taking doing PETG support and PLA print with my X1 and AMS is to print the support using PLA and only using PETG for 2 layers to interface between the support and the part. It's a feature in Bambu studio and it works well. It decrease the amount of poop generated.

This shows a perfect case for recycling PETG waste. TBH I'd love it if filament manufacturers would make a PETG specifically for supports like this. It doesn't need to be high quality or consistent colour. It just needs to print and the cheaper the PETG costs the better. In fact using dirt cheap recycled PETG would reduce print costs even more by preventing PLA prints from failing due to bad support settings or supports welding to the print forcing it to be done again.

Also you don't have to worry about jamming when swapping between materials that print at different temperatures. I'd love to use PLA supports for my PETG, but in my experience you're more likely to jam because of the temperature difference or spend a lot of money on HTPLA to reduce that risk and waste a lot of it switching materials. At that point you might as well go for a soluble support.

I tried PETG for print, PLA for supports with various results (PLA+ too if trying to match heat better). When it works, it's great. When it doesn't, it's a mess. The general thing I noticed is if the print material contacts itself (the main body), it works very well (like how the mask mostly prints) as it also gets some support from the main body. However, if the print material is floated on top of the supports without contact with the main body, then there is a higher risk the print material will come of the support and make spaghetti.

I really wish my p1s had a 2nd print head. I do a lot of minis and terrain with thin layers. They need a lot of supports and don’t always come free clearly, but the amount of waste just swapping for interfaces is crazy. Like many times the amount used for the print. I’m sure this comes from the small layer sizes and relatively low volume of the print, but the AMS system is completely impractical for this use case

I think it's a way better solution to have entier supports printed in PETG here, because printing just a tiny layer (or several) in PETG between PLA may just create 2 week interface instead of one and may result in a mess. That's what I did several times on my Bambu, and every time there are chucks of interface material that come loose and ruine my print. I think I will change my Bambu to a Prusa XL soon.

why does it have a purge tower if you are using different nozzles? why does it have to be purged? might it be there to build the pressure in the nozzle before printing and to catch any oozing that has happend while the tool was parked? so it would be a prime tower instead of a purge tower? Also i see the whole tree support being printed in petg, even in layers where there is no supporting of the model happening, is it possible to use a support interface layer and only have that as PETG? then you dont have to switch toolhead on layers that arent doing any supporting and you wont have to prime the nozzle on that layer. Increasing print spead and reducing the little bit of prime waste.
@logicalfundy

The Presa XL looks nice and 5 different tool heads sounds great. But the price is crazy, also I could see the Prusa XL tool head system having some issues especially if the printer tool head isn't lined up correctly or the part that selects the tool head is off. Plus what if you are running different filaments that require all different templates? Also I am sure I have seen videos of a product that does this I believe it is called the "Carrot" so there is no need to buy a new printer. Plus it doesn’t offer the and latest topic of multiple hotends printing at the same time with could really change the game. We all know that Bambu Lab will release a new printer that is similar if not better. As well as a way to upgrad current printers to have multiple tool heads. Just imagine 5 tool heads, all 5 hooked up 4 AMS system. So 20 AMS systems allowing 80 spools of filament. Even though Bambu Lab AMS systems max is 16 that isn't really true since if you keep splitting off the adapters that feeds the filament to the printer you can run as many as you want. Only issue you might run into is a power supply but that could be easily fixed if they release a power adapter.

PETG pretty much won't stick to anything except PETG - so it will work as support for most common filaments. You can also just use it on the interface layer; I don't really see the point unless you want to save more of one filament. Full supports are nice if they need to make contact with the main piece other than just at the top. I've used this on my Bambu X1C and my Snapmaker IDEX.

That’s not true in both cases. You can achieve the same, or even better, results with something like an SV08 and a commercial MMU for a fraction of the cost. It’s more reliable, offers better support, and retains its value, whereas Prusa locks you into their ecosystem at premium prices just for the name. The XL doesn’t even come with an enclosure, essentially making it a PLA printer. Plus, it’s so "advanced" it doesn’t even need an accelerometer for input shaping, so fast printing-like a fast-moving print head-is out of the question. Sometimes it feels like Prusa is a cult-people think it’s the only option and just blindly pay up. Look at the MK4-still using 2016 tech, no camera, and it’s $1,100. Don’t get me wrong, I had a Prusa in '17, sold it in '20, and went with Voron.
