I love the subtle way they show Qual is a genius mage. He calls the defensive magic complex, but he is immediately able to create the defensive spell upon hearing that it blocks Zoltraak just by understanding the first principles.

Yeah it is a bit overshadowed by frieren one shotting him, but if he would have survived/broken out of the seal before they arrived, he would probably have become a big threat. High mana reservoir, a genius who can analyze,replicate and understand the weakness of a spells in a short time and add to that a long lifespan. Depending on if he would have lay low or the first mage encountered after his unsealing, he could have analyzed the barrier and probably adapted his Soultraak into a new form that can pierce the modern defensive magic. The only thing that might have prevented him from taking it slow would be his pride.

When he notices she disappeared, he first looks to the sides before looking up because he didn't even realize that her flying was an option. That one second was just the opening Frieren needed.

Tells you how powerful Qual was when within a few seconds of getting released he immediately found the weakness of magic defence and a way to counter it, if he had fled and survived he would have gotten more powerful by the day, he invented soultrack imagine what other magic he would have invented.

If he had made it out, there is a VERY good chance that with next to no time at all, he could have altered his spell to be able to bypass standard defensive magic, been able to incorporate defensive magic into his stratagem, and become a WHOLE problem for the central lands, probably even being able to get a group of scattered demons together, and just absolutely destroying the infrastructure in an area. He was a genius after all, and even the Hero party wasn't able to take him down (probably with prep-time too) even though we don't know when in the adventure they came across him. Was it near the start, or towards the end? The "you have been sealed for 80 years" seems to imply though that it was probably pretty close to the time that they dealt with the Demon King, or they are rounding up from the nearest power of 5 so between 75-80.

but even so, he couldn't copy it right away. Or if he did, he couldn't change his way of thinking and reflexes quickly enough. Because even as he analysed the weakness, he went full on offense and was left wide open to his own spell. They could block him, but he couldn't block his own (modified) spell from just seeing how it was done He was very much a genius, but in the end it didn't matter. He was too far behind and had too little time to adjust. From a great threat, to just an easy sidequest and lesson for Fern

@@ThorirPP What are you talking about? He immediately used the dominant strategy against defensive spells: A barrage of small attacks poking at weak points and gaps in the defenses. Then when he noticed one of Fern's defensive spells shattering, he realized he could overpower them, which he then immediately attempted by casting that huge beam variant. This strategy works perfectly later on when Fern uses it against Ehre, Qual just had the misfortune of Frieren killing him from a blindspot, since he didn't know she could fly or cast that demon killing variety of Zoltraak. He's probably immune to his own version, but he didn't know the new one existed until it killed him. He also did manage to shatter not one, but two of Fern's large barriers with this beam, she only survived because in the nick of time she cast a 3rd, as Frieren executed Qual. It's really hard to see but if you go frame by frame you can find the 3rd barrier. Him trying to use defensive magic himself makes no sense, because while yes he could copy it pretty quick, he doesn't yet have training in its usage, so he opted for suppressing fire, something he does have practice in. Also, remember how demons are like? They develop their own spell to perfection, becoming masters in it, but they rarely if ever cast anything but their one spell. To be fair, Qual demonstrated he could, and if he had the time to train with it, i'm sure he would incorporate defensive magic into his arsenal as well. But he didn't have time for that, not in the middle of a fight.

I actually love Qual's personality in this. They could have made him this over the top aggressive monster, but instead he's calm, analytical, and barely even raises his voice, even when hearing the Demon King is dead. Just "Hmm. Okay then, in that case I'll just have to avenge him."

The ending credits obviously reference different characters in the imagery. You can see Qual's face in the vase of flowers under the window. It's also wonderful how the series makes magic almost a science, but, at the same time, doesn't take away any of the wonder.

Frieren seems emotionless but in reality her emotions and feelings are just very very Diminished almost dormant and in her journey with her disciple fern she will come to understand humans and emotions better and by the same occasion ultimately understand her self as well as himmel much better. Qual was a menace. He made an unbeatable killing spell, and was the reason a ton of people died in his time. He got petrified, and not even five minutes into having been woken up 80 years after the fact, he found out how the current barrier spell works, the complexity, its weakness, and even with his old spell, found a way to counteract it. Had anyone else fought him, someone who wasn't well versed in magic with 80 years of practice to use against him, he would've won, and he would've started another rampage.

The bar scene was PERFECT! Also, the butterflies... They're not a critical plot item in any sense, but they are critical to Fern. In prior episodes a happy moment showed her summoning/creating a swarm of spectral butterflies with faces of delight on both her and Heiter's faces. It was a beautiful reminder that Frieren knows more about her than she realizes. I also like how Fern kinda blew off that history tome until the Qual fight, then suddenly was studying rather avidly after. Last, almost all the names in this show are German. You should check out their translations. For instance Frieren means Frozen, Fern means distant, Himmel means heaven, Eisen means iron, and Qual means torment. There's strong symbolism in their names.

Especially check the scene where Frieren and Fern were flying above the tower and talking about how they're the same in E2. You'll see it.

These first chapters are so deceptive, I love it. I was worried for this goofy elf, who is way scarier than a few adventurers with questionable morality. We also were supposed to terribly misjudge Qual because of how Frieren ended the fight. Slowly but surely, my man Qual gets recognition he deserves. Frieren attack on Qual did not create a hole in the earth. Rather, consider the effect a giant lawn gnome would have on the ground-cover plants and soil underneath if sitting there for 80 years. Plant-life underneath killed and from that soil eroded creating a depression where rain water could collect. What do we see in the elevated shot as Qual evaporates in to mana particles? A circular bare soil area with what could be a water puddle in it. --> Background animation team attention to detail.

These are not cartoons. These are specifically Japanese anime - which carries gore, adult themes which its demographic aren't kids. They will time to time get to non-animated series. Plus their viewers are mainly more interested in their animation content.

The word Oneesan(お姉さん) has two meanings: 1: older sister; 2: mature woman. And I think in the part at 5:06 Ferren says ‘I’ve already become a mature woman,’ not ‘I could be your older sister.’ I don’t know if it’s correct, but I don’t trust the translator who translates Sousou no Frieren into Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End.

I don't know either, but most people are able to infer the meaning from the translation. "I could be your older sister" in this context means "I could be (mistaken by looks) for your older sister" since the japanese word has that double meaning, the translation does make sense in my eyes.

The title wasn't "translated to Frieren: Beyond Journey's End" it was LOCALIZED to Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. When translating and/or localizing, some meaning will always be lost. The original title has a double meaning that cannot be directly translated, and directly translating it would result in one of two titles, "Frieren the Slayer", a painfully generic title that would sell the story short, or "Frieren at the funeral" a dull, wet fart of a title. The localizer(s) didn't make a mistake, they made a conscious choice to go for an evocative title rather than a direct translation that would have to lose the double meaning and ultimately be unfaithful anyway. It was a smart choice.

The translation is correct give the context - Japanese and most Asian cultures has a different social structure than most modern western countries where you can casually refer to people who aren't blood-related but is close to you or even complete strangers as a polite way of addressing people as brothers/sisters/auntie/uncle etc like a relative, that's just how the social structure/networking works. In fact it would be more weird for Ferren to infer the later meaning of "mature woman" cos that would be a very delibrate and cold way of creating distance between Ferren and Frieren which essentially means not only they are complete strangers but has beef with each other, which we all know is not the case.

If you want to know how old Fern is during the anime just subtract 11 from the years since Himmel’s death. In this episode Fern says that she is 16 years old and that is when it is 27 years since Himmel’s death. When Frieren met Fern at Heiter’s place it was 20 years after the death of Himmel so Fern was 9 at that time.

Beneath the soil under Qual there is water which, after Frieren killing the demon, is exposed and it reflects the sky. Himmel in German means sky, so the allusion is that he was right that Frieren will return to kill the demon. Visual story telling masterclass.
