Excellent video. I have handled my weed problem with a hoe for years. And kept weeds under control for the first 3 weeks. It was taking 2 1/2 hours a week of my time that I just did not have. This year I switched to a wheel hoe and that 2 1/2 hour a week job turned into a pleasureful 10 minutes. I do NOT have a weed problem any more! I LOVE the Hoss wheel hoe!! KUDOS!

And here in the south that's just how it is... we sweat a lot! But everything he says in this video is spot on... tested by me. It's surprisingly easy to push those sweeps, and they do an excellent job. I just have the thin ones, and they work great for me, but I have very sandy soil, probably not the best for heaver soils that many of you have. I've got a bunch of mulch right now that's being a pain in the butt... I'm in the process of going back to grass... the mulch is just too much work to maintain. I'll say it again... fought weeds for years... light cultivation every week is the answer to most of your trouble... it just works!

Yep, we never got hungry enough to eat perslane either. Didn't matter if it was in the garden or a soybean field, it was a weed. This one tool, with a few extra attachments may make me stick with in-ground gardening and put off raised beds, especially since my sandy loam garden soil composition is very similar.

The grass has been receiving a little secondary water from the overhead sprinkler that we use to get the cover crops up and going. Also, this time of year we get frequent, afternoon showers. Not a lot of rain, but enough to keep the grass green.

Bermuda is my nemesis. I would never intentionally plant next to my garden because I would spend all my time trying to keep it out. We have been planting St augustine around the garden because it will kill out other weeds and is easier to manage its creep.

Great video. Bermuda grass creeping in is the worst. I'm ordering one of these wheel hoes tomorrow! I like grass pathways as well. Wood chips might work well in deserts and high elevation gardens, but in the deep south, where it's 100 degrees and raining every day in the summer, wood chips are a disaster, or at least have been for me. Wood chips don't suppress all weeds, they simply select for weeds with vigorous underground rhizomes like dollarweed and prickly sida. I made the mistake of adding 4 truckloads of wood chips to my garden a few years ago. It looked awesome for a few months and suppressed a lot of grass, but now there's just dollarweed everywhere and it's a huge mess. I'm probably going to switch to grass or sand pathways soon. Pinestraw pathways also seems like an interesting option in the deep south. Anyway great video, thanks for sharing, your garden looks awesome

How do I start a plot? I’ve tried different methods, but I can’t seem to get it right. If I’m starting from pasture with Bermuda grass, clovers, weeds galore, and some other grass that has rhizome roots, do I start by tilling, discing, or maybe scraping all the grass off with the bucket on my tractor? I checked for a video, but didn’t see one.

The till and tarp technique works great for Bermuda grass. Till the area and tarp it for a few weeks. Pull back the tarp and till again. Put the tarp back on and repeat this process 3-4 times.

@@gardeningwithhoss I've never had that happen. We must have a different nut grass variety here in middle to eastern NC. Ours actually has a nut down in the ground hence nut grass. I understand that the tool helps to keep the weed pressure down by running through the soil every week or so but that doesn't help the potential buyer understand the amount of energy it will require to do the initial sweep(s) to remove the grass to get that border for the garden. Running it through an area with barely any weeds is like the commercials about shavers for women showing the blades being used on a hairless leg!

You can use a tarp or a tiller to get the edges established, then use the Wheel Hoe to maintain them.
@ronbell7920
@ronbell7920 5 ай бұрын
I know this is an old thread. But, your wheel hoe is not a primary tillage device! If one has a really small scale get a heavy duty chop hoe, like a mattock without the pointy end. Or use a shovel and try the double dig technique. I use my walking tractor for primary tillage, rotary plow, and power harrow make for impressive beds. That being said, scale is everything! Gardening is such a great low impact workout! My sub 2,000 square foot garden can help me burn hundreds of calories, my Hoss wheel hoe just makes it easier to manage just like Travis said! I have a lot of fun doing flower beds with just the heavy hoe, broad fork, and my wheel hoe! I even using the little cultivating disc on my wheel hoe to work in soil amendments into the top layer of soil. Man have fun and sweat a little!
