I have a 2019 21bhe and tow mine with a 2014 Dodge Durango Citadel 5.7l V8 and a Curt 10k wdh with sway control...no problems at up to 65. I usually cruise at 55-60 and get 13-14 mpg. I live at the base of the Smokies so I regularly go thru a 3k elevation change when I head out. No problems so far with sway, tire wear, axle condition, braking(prodigy brake controller) or heating the TV. Mine is a awd with a towing package. It's usually just my wife and I and depending on where we're going the only other thing in the TV is my gas generator(98lbs). The Hemi is plenty of power and it rides very level and smooth. The Dodge has built in leveling capability and I looked at air bags but decided not because it just doesn't seem necessary after the first 1000 miles.

My brother and his wife purchased that exact model back in January, they have two boys so it is a perfect fit for them. They were going to pull it with a Hemi powered Jeep Grand Cherokee, but were concerned about it pulling okay in the mountains. Ultimately they found a good used RAM 1500 with the Hemi engine. They are currently in Moab Utah with the camper and truck (from Nebraska). I asked him how it pulled thru the mountains and he said it was not a problem. Truck pulled it easily!

We are pulling it with a Ram 1500 5.7L (10,700 tow) and pack very lightly as we boondock exclusively in Arizona mountains. We've been pleased with how well the truck pulls with the Husky WDH and the trailer being the perfect size for a couple.

Definitely a nice rig, and they nailed the bathroom! Appreciate you repeating the importance of payload capacity & max towing packages. We just took our 3rd trip in our 2021 Flagstaff Micro Lite 25BRDS (twin to the Rockwood Mini Lite 2509S). Our family of 3 (sometimes with a 4th guest) has towed approximately 1500 miles in 3 trips and we are using a Chevy Silverado crew cab, short bed 4x4 with the max trailering package. As you said before, we don't even come close to the 11,400 pounds of towing capacity, but we have a 2039 pound payload capacity and this disappears quickly. With approximately 1000 pounds of tongue weight with a loaded trailer (2 batteries & 2x30 lbs. of propane) and a 4 passenger weight of 550 pounds, this leaves us a MAX allowable weight of 489 pounds for additional bed cargo. However, we rarely carry more than 100 pounds in the bed. Our Andersen no sway weight distribution hitch has been rock solid so far.

For me it’s simple go over the GVWR that’s all there is to it. The truck is not designed to do more. I think I have heard you talk about height and wind forces and trucks not having enough weight to handle that. I disagree with that reasoning as trucks get lighter and tow numbers keep going up. And when weight is properly distributed I haven’t found that to be an issue.

@markreams31923 жыл бұрын
It would be helpful if you showed the yellow sticker which gives the dry weight of the trailer with all the options and full propane tanks as weighed at the factory. Dry advertised hitch weight is 490 pounds. It would very difficult to get that trailer to 1000 pounds hitch weight. You can load bricks in that front storage compartment and you might get there. Only a percentage of weight loaded in the trailer translates to tongue weight. Even the batteries and propane. The percentage does get higher the closer to the hitch ball you get. There is stuff that will be loaded behind the axles which will offset stuff loaded at the front. Most half tons will tow that trailer without a problem. The exception would be specialty trucks like a Raptor, TRX, or trail boss. These trucks have very low payload and tow capacity. They’re designed for desert racing, not hauling and towing. An f150 with a 5.0 would tow that trailer without breaking a sweat under most circumstances. Setting a limit of 6000# is a bit arbitrary. I think you need to consider the individual needs. Is it a large family with lots of motorized toys or is it a single person or older couple with a bicycle and a couple of lawn chairs. The latter is very unlikely to load the trailer to max weight, let alone the truck. The exception to this is carrying a full load of fresh water and not dumping waste tanks. That needs to taught in travel trailer towing 101!😂 It would be wise to take your rig to a CAT scale and weigh it. Maybe you can weight your rig and include it in a video.

It's doable. For example my F-150 has a payload capacity of 1860 pounds (per Ford that includes a 150 pound driver). If you want to transfer 12.5% to the tonque, you're putting about 1300-ish pounds to the truck, which is below the rated payload capacity. If it's just him and maybe one other person and they packed moderately light and have empty tanks in the trailer, they could certainly be within the rated capacities of the truck. For me, it would just be me and my dog, and I would be fine with a 7500 pound trailer behind my truck.

Hey JD. quick question. My parents have a 2020 Chevy Suburban, and we have a family of 5. Now we do not really bring any cargo at all besides changes of clothes and lawn chairs and that’s it. Would they be able to safely tow something like this ? Max tow I believe is 6k pounds
@Vulnox3 жыл бұрын
I think your towing suggestions are correct, the only thing I would caution is recommending "Max Tow" as being an appropriate option in this case. At least when talking about Ford Max Tow, it does not automatically increase payload, and in some cases it actually hurts payload. That's the misconception I see a lot from F-150 owners. For example, a PowerBoost F-150 Lariat already has the 3.73 rear, heavy duty axle, heavy duty springs, improved radiator, most everything from the Max Tow. What you get by buying Max Tow over that is the heavy duty bumper and heavy duty rated parking brake, that's basically it. But those consume payload, they don't improve it. So a like-for-like PB F-150 has worse payload with Max Tow. The standard tow package gets you larger rear brakes and all the functional stuff you need, and you can still tow up to 10k lbs, which is more than you would need for a TT that you would put behind a 1/2 ton. You also save money and payload that way. If getting an XLT 301a F-150, you should go for the HDPP (Heavy Duty Payload Package) and NOT the Max Tow. The HDPP gets you up to a crazy 2600 or so pounds of Payload in an F-150, and still has over 12k lbs of towing. There are just WAY better ways to option an F-150 than Max Tow if you are looking at a boat or TT. Now if you are doing flat trailer hauling for a race car or something, then Max Tow comes back into play with some engines.
@brianlykins66632 жыл бұрын
Nice little trailer . All someone has to do is pull a trailer that's too heavy behind a truck that's too light and they will never complain again. You could put your 5th wheel behind a 1/2 ton pickup and move it. I certainly wouldn't want to go far. When a truck is loaded at or near max weight, you can get a way with it on perfect roads, weather and your guardian angel is with you. Add something as simple as wet roads and you would appreciate that bigger truck. As you state it your videos "in your oppinion" what is safe to tow with. If someone disagrees that's their right. No difference than liking this fridge over another one, or preferring this color to a different color. A dealership should really be explaining and helping customers with that information. Keep doing what your doing and after all its your channel, your opinions. God bless you and your family.

JD, I understand you like to be conservative with your ratings for tow vehicles. However where I used to camp, the most important thing was the truck's brakes. Some of those hills, I could smell the brakes going down. Majority of the trailers I pulled didn't have trailer brakes to assist. On one or two of the longer hills, I would piss people off behind me. I would bring it to almost a stop at the top, drop the truck into first and then start down the hill.

Your point that the front of the camper is where the storage weight is a point I’ve often wondered about. I have taken it across the scales and I’m under the payload limits and within all the limits for the truck fully loaded. Both axles are under the limits and the overall weight of the total rig is under the max GVW. I feel confident and comfortable and safe with my setup but i understand how it could feel a little too much for some people.

I have a 2020 Grand Design Imagine XLS 23BHE, I little more heavier than the 21BHE . My tow vehicle is a 2020 Tahoe RST and I use a Equalizer weight distribution hitch which helps leveling. We are very careful on what we carry and keep the load distributed in the trailer.

You are always mentioning upgrading rv tires where do you go to do this? Would NTB or Firestone do it?
@BTBRVReviews3 жыл бұрын
You can always purchase the tires online and take them to Discount, Firestone, and Many other places to have them mounted.

As a professional tech I can tell you. That you can bring your Rv to almost any vehicle repair shop and they will do it for you along with any Rv. Shop just let them know when you schedule your appointment but you can 99 percent of the time get it done where you have your vehicle serviced

The layout of this unit is virtually identical to our Forest River NOBO 19.3... the NOBO trades storage space where the bush kitchen is located. On the NOBO, the lower bunk flips up and from the outside door is a huge/tall storage area instead of the kitchen. The NOBO is 4200 empty and 7000 GVWR, but with a realistic camping load (as a couple) of less than 1500, the trailer is sub-6000 fully loaded... my 2016 F-150 Lariat (V-8) with 1950 payload and 9100 towing is perfect. In response to your "ask" for comments, I think you are very conservative on the safe-side (not a bad thing)... in the forums, I see people every day using jaw-dropping under sized and under-powered TVs. Friday, I had to lock it up to avoid a moron, and had I not had a TV with "tow-haul" mode and enough size... I never would have been able to avoid a bad accident. Trailer never deviated from straight behind my truck.

Completely agreed. This is basically a significantly shortened 2800BH. Amazing they were able to compact this thing as much as they did! Really nice setup!

That's the beauty of the XLS line. You get all the features of an Imagine, just in a more compact plan. We considered this briefly, but the wife nixed the Murphy bed and we bought the 2800BH. It's a great unit. And I tow it with a F-150 with no difficulty.

this is our ideal camper. dedicated bed for my daughter and if a friend of hers comes with us but not to big where we cant fit in some of the back woods campsites we go to. the only issue for me is the price best i can find up in alberta canada is 45,000. witch for me is about 15 more then i can afford to spend. anyone know of some cheaper campers with layouts comparable but not over 25foot bumper to hitch?

Our Cougar is 7200#GVWR. I havent weighed it yet but I am guessing its 6500-6800 since the dry weight is 5600. My F150 is speced to tow 10700 and my capacity is 1750. I should be fine with my numbers since its just me and the wife, but again I havent weighed it. I think I am more concerned with the trailer king tires. I have family still using their stock tires for years, but no one tows super long distances (over 500 miles)that often, which i think is a part of the reason they have lasted.

I like that the color scheme is light instead of the usual dark wood that makes any unit feel cramped, no matter how large. The floor space under the bottom bunk would be a great place to stash the kitty litter box! Overall, I like this rig, but it is too small for two elderly adults, one of whom has limited mobility, plus our (ahem) ... 9 ... cats... LOL

Over all i think your towing reccomemdations are quite conservative, which is a good thing in regards to this topic. Mostly I enjoy how much you push people to.get a larger truck.of they are serious about towing, half ton pickups are not designed for serious towing or hauling.

About what kind of price for this? Nice camper and perfect for four people for a long weekend.
@Demoguy873 жыл бұрын
Honestly you're just silly. That trailer transfers nowhere near a thousand pounds payload fully loaded More like 800. Secondly a max to f150 is good for 11,500 to 13,500. You're correct most of them will have at least 1,600 lb payload when you factor in weight cargo and all that you may be close to your 1600 lb payload however knowing these trucks are severely overengineered and derated for consumer safety It is okay to go right up to the payload number. Thousands and thousands of people till 10,000 pounds or more all the time with their f-150s and they do so safely Wake up men it's 2021

The Grand Designs are a high end trailer over the Jayco that you mentioned. We have the 2400BH and we rented it the last couple of years. Not one bit of problems with the trim pieces coming apart or the doors falling off there hinges. We tow this trailer with our 17 Ram 1500 Ecodiesel. 15 mpg out here in the Rockymountains. Our truck is rated to tow up to 9600lbs, but our unit weighs about 7000lbs loaded with batteries and propane and gear. Great video.
