I'm not sure if it's unsportsmanlike to catch a fish snagged like that. The whole cycle of fishing is trying to put the bait where the fish are. You didnt do it intentionally and the fight was actually more difficult. Not ideal but you still did everything the same as if he ate it.

Growing up back in the 70s my uncles always told me alot of times a cat will swipe at a bait to knock it out temporarily then turn on it and swallow it. Now years, to many to talk about later, I still believe that's true. Still I would always rather catch him in the mouth but that was one hell of a "CATch" lol.

I had a flathead come up and swipe at a spinnerbait and hooked it in the left fin, it was 41 lbs on 12 lb test line, but hooked in the side fin like that he felt like the 80 I caught lol
