I bought an beat up Montgomery Wards edger when I was 19 for $10, that was 26ish years ago, The Briggs & Stratton engine is date coded 1969, I have spent way way way more money maintaining it then I paid for it, Just like your lawn mower it always starts first or second pull, such a great little engine (2 horse briggs flathead). I don't ever plan on replacing it I edge probably 300 lineal feet of concrete about every week or 10 days with it, It works so good lol.

Lol. My grandfather was just like this owner. He never did any maintanance on his machines, and just ran them until they quit working. He had a riding mower and a push mower that had been sitting in his back yard for years that were given to me after he died. I got both of them running for $8.00. Both had dirty carbs, and he had replaced both machines. The push mower is still running great almost five years later, and the riding mower is the one I mentioned in the other comment.

I have this exact mower, I change the oil once every 1-2 years depending on oil color, even though it a just top off engine. I also sharpen the blade 2 X per year and change the air filter and plugs yearly. She runs like day I bought her and expect a long life ahead of her. A little maintenance goes a long way. I have a very large yard and the mower works hard but still runs so good. Also key is draining the gas at the end of each season over winter ensures she starts right up and have no carb problems.

I do rountine maintance every year on my mower I am very picky about the maintance and I also use my leaf blower to blow off all the leaves and grass every time I'm done mowing. This goes for all my small engine equipment and my vehicles.

@AtomicReverend Жыл бұрын
I change my oil by color alone. I've been doing this with my vehicles (I am a total gearhead and hands on fella) and equipment for 30 years now and It seems to work well. As for my mower I do clean it thoroughly after every use and once or twice a year the blade get sharpened, I never use a pressure washer because the paint usually comes off the aluminum Briggs engines. My lawn tractor is a bit more involved, I checked the oil before every use, I glance at the two belts to make sure they aren't cracked or fraid, I gas it up and about every third lawn mowing I checked the air cleaner, every other lawn mowing I check with a PSI gauge the tire pressure (every mowing I step on the tires to make sure they have air) I grease the few zerk fittings that it has and then I mow the yard. Before I put it up I use the water hose and blow off all the lawn clippings/dirt and I actually clean underneath the deck. In fact when I pull it out this week I'm going to wash it with soap and water when I'm done and dry it off and then it's going to get the ceramic wax stuff just to give it a little extra protection I don't want to spend another $2,300 ever again. Being in California As far as I know in a year or two I won't be able to buy any gasoline small engines I'm not sure if this includes tractors but my goal is to give California a big middle finger and use it for the next 40 or 50 years until I die. As a big gearhead I can pretty much rebuild anything as long as I can get the parts for it so my lawn mowers have an infinite life cycle.

I know how it feels to save one for no reason. My mother and grandmother had identical riding mowers. My mom's threw a rod, and my grandmother's had fuel system issues, but had been sitting outdoors for a couple of years. Both of them gave their machines to a local small engine shop, and I ended up with both of them through happenstance several years later. By this point, both of them had been sitting for a number of years. The engine was roached on my mom's, and my grandmother's was in poor cosmetic shape, though I was able to get it running. I completely disassembled both mowers, and built one good one from the parts. I got it completely reassembled, and when I went for the first start, I forgot to adjust the valves. One of them hit the spark plug and stripped out the threads in the spark plug tube. I threw the bad engine away without thinking to save the head, and I have never found another head or anything to repair the spark plug tube. The mower has been sitting in my shop for five years now, but I can't bring myself to get rid of it.
@jonathansherwood5841 Жыл бұрын
That's a tough one. Perhaps you could see if there is a Helicoil (or another brand) thread repair kit that will fit your spark plug. Worth a shot, since the heads on vehicle engines are sometimes repaired this way due to a stripped/damaged spark plug hole. 🐺🔧

The air box got broken and it quit running, so he just parked it in his back yard, and left it out in the weather with no air box on it for a couple of years, according to him. I stick with Honda mowers and with the exception of the stupid driveshaft bushings had no major issues with my last one that I had for 10 years. 1) Change the oil annually 2) Use the leaf blower after every mow to clean it off 3) Shut the engine off by turning the fuel off and letting it idle until the carb was dry 4) Take the vacuum cleaner to the air filter every month or two or when it shows black smoke when accelerating. Replace the air filter every few years. It’s dusty here. I think I washed it 3 or 4 times in 10 years. Blowing it off goes a long way. I pulled the shroud once thinking it’d need to clean it to endure good cooling but it was actually quite clean. I gave it away, but mower STILL has the original spark plug and starts on the very first pull. I only replaced it because I got sick of the wheel bushing design flaw.

This represents corporate buyouts of traditional brands and the desire to max profits at all costs. Make them as cheap as possible, including that junk B&S plastic engine, throw a respected manufacturer (who was bought out years ago) label on it and fool the consumer who buys at big box stores. I'll keep my old school Snappers with their bullet proof drive and old school Quantum engines. I keep them squeeky clean too for all the reasons you mention. I can get parts cheaper that a whole new thing and I have 'X' amount of time on this earth so I might as well use it fixing something I can save money on and then use on our place instead of buying some overpriced something and making a dealer and/or a bank happy. Even if I end up with a modest investment in a piece it's still less than half the price of a new one and a lot better shape with add-ons than factory stuff. And the electric start Troy-bilt looks EXACTLY like the Snapper in the picture except for the electric start and smaller engine. Deck and handles are the same and it's a 2010. And all I lack is fixing it.Total cost so far is for a battery, charger and carb kit around $50. The same mower goes from $350 on up. And this one will make my Sweetie HAPPY! Can't put a dollar sign on THAT! I actually had more than one person turn their head and refuse to learn how to check their oil when I attempted to show them. I had a customer come in with a very serious oil leak one time that was bad enough that I could see it dripping. She had no oil in the engine, so I attempted to show her how to check it. She said that she was a woman, and she didn't need to know how to do that. I turned around, walked off, and left her standing there. I did that because I would be wasting my time if I spent any more time with her. I couldn't put oil in her car due to liability issues, and if she was refusing to do it herself, then there was no point in spending any more time with her.

I find using a camera phone easier because of the size of the screen. However I transfer the video to computer to edit it.

I really believe in taking care of your own stuff so it lasts. But on top of that too I abused the s*** out of my own things because they are mine, when somebody lets me borrow theirs I treat it like a gem because it is not mine. On that note I stopped watching when you would not stop complaining about the way somebody else treats their own property. If you're charging charge accordingly and move on

With the cost of lawn mowers now a days and how cheap there made it pays to take care of it to get as much out of it as possible.

Another issue is people get things given to them and because they dint buy it they abuse it and beat it i found out. Also its parents who buy stuff for there kids and they dont take care of it either because mommy and daddy will just buy them another... its sad seen in the past and ive heard people tell me this. the reason to it may be so dirty is that someone wants to hurry rush mow there lawn and get back inside of there house and do other things and really dislike mowing heh.
