An awesome fishing session was crazy productive with heaps of catches using ultra light gear and soft plastics. Captured some awesome footage. Using an oldie but a goodie soft plastic a staple favourite of many. The ever reliable Z-man 2.5 inch grub in midnight oil and motor oil rigged on a 1/20 hws jig head. Has to be one of my favourite soft plastics of all time that never lets you down and is great for a whole range of fish species including bream, pinky snapper, snook, trevally, flathead, salmon, flathead, and so much more in the bay, estuaries and also the lakes and rivers.
Fishing Gear Used
Zman Grubz 2.5 inch midnight oil and motor oil
hws 1/20 jig head
4 lb line and leader
Millerod twitch freak
Daiwa Luvia LT 2000s

Alan the grub is lethal and great for people new to plastics because it is so versatile and i love it. But also the gulp 3 or 4inch turtle back worm is a killer. I've caught, snapper, flathead salmon, whiting, bream and wrasse land based on one or the other. I caught a king goerge whiting no bigger than a turtle back worm on the turtle back. That's how affective they are. In short they are awesome.😁

Great video👍 I usually use a 1/8 or 1/4 jig head as current always pushes the lure away from my target zone before it hits the bottom. Plus it helps to cast further… I wonder if you also use 1/20 when doing land base?
@fishingmad
@fishingmad 2 жыл бұрын
All depends on the system your fishing and species your targeting. Eg if im land base fishing for bream 100% im using 1/16 or 1/20 maybe 1/12 using the wind to my advantage where i can. In high current situations for things like flathead than must drop down to heavier like 1/4, 1/6, 1/8 to get the plastic down to the strike zone

Awesome Session! I just have quick question though, when exactly do you set the hook for SP fishing? Is it at the first bite or after a few bites because I was doing some SP bream fishing and kept on getting bites and not hooking a fish and it's pretty heartbreaking at times.
@fishingmad
@fishingmad 2 жыл бұрын
Great Question its something you just slowly master with experience. I tend to wait for the first few nibbles and when you feel the weight than strike and engage the hook. This can be different depending on the hook up. Eg some fish will just pick and play with the lure and you will feel little twitches but no weight so I just leave it there waiting for the weight before striking. Other times the fish smash the soft plastic and in those cases you load up straight away.
@lucast5964
@lucast5964 2 жыл бұрын
@@fishingmad Yes I think I will need a bit more experience, the fish seems to be nibbling it too much, if it's not small fish then I suspect my jighead (1/12) being too heavy.
@blackouthq4732
@blackouthq4732 2 жыл бұрын
@@lucast5964 1/12 should be fine but get the size 2 hooks they fit in breams mouths better. If u get a good bite but no hookup just pause and let it sink back down then start winding in really slow and hope it comes back but bream tend to spook pretty easily.
@blackouthq4732
@blackouthq4732 2 жыл бұрын
@@lucast5964 Also u don't need to strike that hard just slowly apply pressure until u feel the weight like OP said. Some times I'll give a couple small tugs to really set the hook but I don't even know if that's necessary

Nice video. Question: how does dropping your line weight improve hook ups? Is there a big difference between line weights even with braid when it all is pretty much the same size?
@fishingmad
@fishingmad 2 жыл бұрын
Dropping the line weight makes a massive difference. It helps with casting accuracy and distance, it helps with sink rates of lightly weighted soft plastics and it helps leader shy fish like bream which are smart and finicky. You will be surprised dropping line and leader strength can help massive with catch rates. I take guys out fishing all the time and often they will ask how come your catching and I'm not and generally its because I'm fishing much lighter. We spent 25 minutes talking about this topic on our latest members podcast that will go live in a few days which might also be helpful.

Hey Alan, I wanted to know your opinion on using worm plastics + worm scent on beaches/flats for whiting. Do you think this is a viable method? Im also trying to learn how to catch beach worms to target them and was wondering if its worth burleying my fishing areas while using my SPs targeting the whiting?
@fishingmad
@fishingmad 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it will work I'm sure. Whiting love worm soft plastic imitations just like this video highlights kzbin.info/www/bejne/h4CnpHmretGVf6M on the flats just need to get the jig head weight right. Plastics like the turtleback worms are already scented so you wont need to add any scent there.
