Great video again Alan, The mistake I made when I started soft plastic fishing was that I had too much slack in the system. Especially when there was wind creating a bow in my braid. I started having more success when someone showed me how to work that line between tension and slack and watching for that line to dip when you contact bottom. Great sp101 here!

Your welcome Ian, your spot on i would usually change a soft plastic or lure after 20-30 minutes. Often its more a case of covering ground trying to find the schools or waiting until they come on the bite. But always good to keep mixing it up until things start happening.

Fantastic video . I would like to know when you changed your soft plastic, Di you change you jig head too , if not can you reuse the original orange soft plastic a number of times ? Or is it ruined because you rigged it up once already and has holes in it . If the plastic is ok ,how many times can you re right the same plastic before the hole is to big to reuse . Do you leave the jig and the plastic together for another time or start from scratch next time . Also do use use a snap swivel to keep changing your plastics . Thank you once again any info would be much appreciated and keep up the great work Maurice ,
@fishingmad7 ай бұрын
I used the same jig head the entire time. How long you get out of a soft plastic really depends on the brand of soft plastic and how many bites you get. I often chop and change colours and profiles of the soft plastic until im consistently getting bites. if you use brands like Zman they are crazy durable and rarely break even after many catches. I dont use snap swivles, i just tie the jig head using a uni knot and most times just change the plastic if i feel a need, without really changing the jig head much unless its to heavy or to light.
@eurekagold7 ай бұрын
@@fishingmad thank you for responding . I’m in the organizing process . So if I change plastic I kept it on the jig and put it back in the packet but that means I have too many jig heads around . Now I’ll use the same highway as you advised and put the plastic back in the packet . Do you mark which one you’ve used in the packet or is it obvious that it’s been used so as to not using new ones cheers Maurice

Can you use a swivel instead of a double uni knot for the leader , thanks
@fishingmad11 ай бұрын
No, you shouldn't use a swivel, you risk breaking the guides on your rod if you accidentally reel into much and it will impact the swimming action of the soft plastic and the casting distance. Cheers
@SandmannOZ Жыл бұрын
Hey Alan, thanks for the clear instructional vid. I've been bait fishing on and off for forty years or so but just starting out with soft plastics now and doing my research. One question: you mention not using a swivel? I notice you're fishing a lake with really still waters... if you were fishing coastal waters with tidal currents would you use a swivel there? And if so would you put it between the main line and leader, or use a snap swivel on the jig head?
@fishingmad Жыл бұрын
Never use a swivel it impacts the swimming action of the soft plastic and will damage the guides of your rod if your not careful. You'll see in many of our other vids I'm fishing in the bay targeting bigger species like snapper and I always use 1 rod length of fluro joined by a double uni or FG knot. Hope that helps

Hi Alan great vid I'm 70 years old love fishing want to fish soft plastics for fist time whats a good light spinning rod and size to use love your vids Rob.
@fishingmad2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Rob, I appreciate the kind words. I would recommend starting with a 2-4 kg rod around 7 foot in length paired with a 2500 size reel. That's a very versatile setup which will allow you to target a whole range of different species in the lakes, estuaries and bay. Its hard to recommend specific ones because the budgets are so drastically different between an entry level and high end setup. We do have some gear guides in our members area to try and help people with brand and model choices. If your just starting you should be able to pickup a combo with specs i mentioned above for $120-$200 at most retailers and keep an eye out for specials
@Draznesht Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great lession. My question here is: Do you feel the bites on your hand or watch the rod end or just when you are pulling some line there is a fish on it :) What size is the rod M? 8-32grams? I am a beginner and try to find whats my mistake in the jig fishing to not feel bites at all.
@fishingmad Жыл бұрын
Yeah you feel little taps on the rod tip, especially if your using a decent spin rod and braid. I feel the taps on the rod tip and that usually transfers down the rod blank. Then you wait for them to hit hard and then strike

Great video. Have found the @fishingmad videos today and are burning through them. Question though: I get casting half a dozen times in the one spot then moving further to cover more ground to find fish. But how many spots would you try with no luck before you would consider trying a different soft plastic? And do you then go over the same ground with the new plastic or keep moving down?
@fishingmad2 ай бұрын
Glad your finding the videos helpful. With plastics I usually fish the same spot for 10-15 minutes and then move on and try another spot for 10-15 minutes and repeat the process, it might only be a small move 50-100 meters of bigger if im not really liking the spot. If im not getting any bites or nibbles after 30 minutes then im likely to change the plastic colour or profile until i work out what there biting on the day. Each day will be different, thats the challenge and adventure of fishing is working through each day

Hey Alan, i'm a little late to this video but i'm just wondering if you have any specific rod recommendations for soft plastics fishing?
@fishingmad10 ай бұрын
All depends on what your targeting. A good starting point would be something like a 7 foot 2-4 kilo rod paired with a 2500 size reel.

Great video mate I really enjoyed you walking through from beginning to end. What is the rod you’re using or what rod is a decent entry level to get me started, cheers.

Your very welcome, the rod used was a Favorite Black Swan they are very hard to source in Australia. Any 2-4kg spin rod would work well for both bait and soft plastics. Something Like a Shimano Raider, Shimano Zodias/Vanford combo, Daiwa TD Black combo. Have a look on the fishingmad website which suggests some great rod and reel options at different price points. fishingmad.com.au/review/best-spinning-rods-2024

I've been looking for a video like this for a while. As someone with minimal lure experience, this is the best instructional video I've seen. Everything is covered here.
