This ex-soldier was forced to pull out of an interview after his friend who he served with was killed on duty. Whilst at the funeral, this person was sent one of the worst emails I have ever seen from a recruiter.
The recruiter promised to blacklist him, ensuring he would not be able to get a job elsewhere, and she called out his character saying he lacked integrity. This was whilst he was trying to comfort his friend's family at the funeral.
What was ridiculous about this was that even if this had happened on the actual day it would still be inexcusable but he gave the recruiter a few days heads up that he would no longer be able to attend the interview because of the funeral.
It is one of the worst emails that I have ever seen.

I want her name. As a Brit and a veteran, I will use every contact I have to have HER blacklisted. How DARE she treat our injured personnel like this, particularly on a day when she knew that a fallen soldier, his brother-in-arms, was being laid to rest. Utterly abhorrent.

The idea that THREE days notice was considered unreasonable suggests the recruiter is genuinely nuts. How on EARTH did she not simply reach out to the employer right away and advise that you would be traveling for a funeral? Ask for a reschedule? I'd expect very few employers to complain under the circumstances. And the wild hyper aggressive follow up message was probably actionable. If someone sent me that, they'd hear from a lawyer! Recruiter likely realized this poor struggling vet was young and inexperienced.

In Ontario, Canada, 'blacklisting' is illegal. Anyone who does so and can be proven to have done so has just made their company open to a lawsuit. A friend of mine was 'blacklisted' and they "turned the tables" on the person, got the evidence they needed and reported the behavior to the parent company, with a proviso that if nothing was done, they would be seeking a legal solution. The 'blacklister' was fired immediately and the company gave my friend a 'glowing recommendation' that got him a job in very short order. He didn't feel the need to go after the company for money.

There are work-arounds to that law. I worked for a national company owned by several multinationals, and what they did was never recommend anyone. You existed for x-number of years at the company, and that was it. Management and supervisors were officially barred from commenting on former employees in any capacity. You could have been the best employee, ever, but officially, it all sounded like you were the worst, when searching for a new job. Couple that with targeting senior employees for layoff, and you have people long out of the job market, trying to become employed again with no references. You could get a co-worker to comment on your behalf, but it but it skewed a lot of weight against you when management refused to.

My reply was predictably anglo-saxon, and I didn't return at all, ever. He promised litigation because of lack of notice, but even his own lawyer told him he was on a hiding to nothing. At the time, the powers that be decided to clear out the senior soldiers (I.e. all but forcibly retired) to make way for new blood, and to save dollars. Video interview for IT consulting. On the manager's side there was a noise that sounded like something had fallen over but probably not broken, and what sounded like a child's yelp. Interviewer looked startled, interviewee exclaimed "child takes priority, GO!" The interviewee didn't have as much experience as some of the other candidates, but that moment was when she got the job: techniques can be taught, empathy and the ability to deal with the unexpected, not so much (I was one of the veterans who got to train her). The funeral of a brother-in-arms is more important than a freaking interview, too, and I for one wouldn't want to work for people who don't understand that.

I went for a special offer of three free sessions with a personal trainer-type-person, with a view to paying for her services longer term. My MIL died and the day before the funeral I had a session booked. On the morning I realised I couldn't do it. I was too upset. I messaged her and explained. A day or two later and she forwards me an email that she had sent to someone else. I then learnt that these sessions were not free but being paid for by some kind of charitable group. I had no prior knowledge of this and she had never mentioned that she needed 24 hours notice or anything like that. She also included personal medical information to this stranger! I was so upset. Who does that when you know a person's loved one has died? I sent an email to her and to the previously unknown charity person, stating that I was distressed and could not trust her and hence would not be partaking of any more of her services. It angers me still that this woman is still peddling her stuff in the local community and that she never replied to my email and I never heard from her or the charity person again. Absolutely disgraceful. So my heart goes out to the guy in the video. It's just appalling.

I’m from America and recruiters are not used in many job searches. This fiasco is one reason that Americans still work with the at-will concept. Yes, the employer can fire you, but YOU can QUIT at your own will!! The problem with recruiters is that they are making cash when you get hired (UGH!). All this lady had to do was notify the potential interviewer and say what was going on. And talking about “being honest”, it is a sure bet that this woman did not even try to notify the interviewer or explain the situation. This shows that if a potential employee were to have a child or spouse fall ill and go to the hospital, she would be just as harsh. If she is married with kids, I feel so sorry for them and those around them. No need to be so very harsh and rigid.

I see that many Police Forces (possibly all) have signed the AFC, publicly committing to abide by it's guidance, but if that's not for you, there are many companies in science, engineering, and healthcare who are crying out for people. Several of my colleagues found us through our activities supporting the covenant, so it's great for the business as well as being the right thing to do.

Oh, absolutely, the manager was spot-on! Because, you know, veterans are just machines, right? They should be able to compartmentalize everything, including their personal grief, because clearly, that's how service works. I mean, how dare a veteran, who sacrificed their health defending our freedoms, have the audacity to ask for a little consideration from a recruiter? It's not like they deserve any human decency or understanding, especially when it's inconvenient for someone else's schedule. And the nerve of mentioning their service in the same breath! Like, yeah, we get it, you fought for our country, but can't you prioritize a job interview over a funeral? Talk about responsibility issues, right? Missing a job interview because of a family death? Unheard of! How irresponsible can one get? Thank goodness we have managers who are quick to remind us that veterans should prioritize job opportunities over their own personal tragedies. Bravo!

Just on the topic of what the Army should have done to help him adjust to civilian life, he would have been entitled to resettlement courses, they help you put together a CV, how to spot transferable skills ect.. and he should still be entitled to his learning credits towards courses. If the Army didn't offer him these, then they have failed him. His divisional officer should have highlighted these to him. When I left the biggest adjustment was the banter and interactions. The military have a very specific dark sense of humour that isn't always acceptable in civilian life, it's knowing how to adjust to that and not to offend people. However your massive advantage to lean into is that you can think out of the box, time awareness, dependability and flexibility to various jobs. You have more transferable skills than you realise.

Recruiters are genuinely arseholes. Not only this but the one I was with sent my payslip to another engineer, several times, recruiters at this company would send us all an e-mail without blind copy. I reported this several times and the owner said sorry but it continued to happen, being in IT the last time it happen I tracked one of the people down via the e-mail address. Worked out where they were working and could now send them spoof e-mails pretending to be the recruiter. I explained that to the recruiter who still didn't seem to understand the issue. The last issue, was after I was no longer a contractor with them. I noticed their website had been hacked, well a part of it. I reported it to the owner, he was concerned. Several months later I checked and it was just the same. All recruiters care about is their commission. If she gets your a job she gets her commission and potentially a cut in the pay you make each week. They are parasites. Sadly that company is still in business.

Depending upon what country this took place, she could have been sued for what she did. Though, I think the statue of limitations is likely expired.

I'm not an army guy, but there are no words to describe the actions of that recruiter. If somebody died or is injured while defending their country, they should be treated with respect and understanding. But still there are countless homeless veterans.

One of the things that I think all of these stories have in common is that they could probably avoid a lot of harassment outside of the work place (during work hours) is to turn off their phone. Especially if they are at a funeral, wedding, meeting, driving, etc. People are a little too tied to their phones now, to the point that they don’t use common sense when in those situations. I just kept thinking: Turn your phone off! This young man didn’t even have employment yet as was being harassed by the recruiter - was she too lazy to make the phone call to re-schedule his interview? IF she had bothered and told the company the reason, I’m sure they would have had no problem rescheduling. Can he request to work with a different recruiter? The fact that this woman would continually harass him DURING a funeral - is it just me or does nobody have a lick of common sense anymore?

Blacklisting is extremely difficult to do lawfully, as it usuallt contravenes data protection requirements. It's very unlikely that any reputable company will agree to blacklist anyone.

Normally only applies to internal companies. So Do not rehire is an example how it’s done legally. But you need to be sacked by the company to attain that.

Such a horrible situation and really sad. Transition out of the military is something really under scrutiny at the moment and hopefully is improving all the time. Medical discharge and short notice discharge are a big issue. Frustratingly there is a lot of support out there, it's just not known about, so many third sector organisations around for veterans and new service leavers. The Forces Employment Charity is one of the big ones.

I only was in the army during the then still mandatory 1 year service back then here, but the other thing I can completely relate to was the "I got my job because of a buddy of mine worked there", which is true of all the tree jobs in my life I so far. (~25 years at my current job now, even though my buddy quit about 18 years ago).

I never served. Age-wise I was eligible for National Service back in the day, but the armed services seemed to take exception to the crutches I needed. That said - literally dozens of my extended family did - and not all of them came back. Lost family in France, Germany, Malaya, Korea, Palestine and Cyprus. I've since been of the opinion since that we should all spend a few quid modifying our war memorials. Strike out the part that says "We will never forget!" and replace it with "SOME of us will never forget. The rest have bloody forgotten already!"

That is disgusting! First sorry for your loss. The recruiter should be ashamed of themselves! You gave plenty of time, it is their job to communicate with the employer which clearly they didn't and now are feeling the pressure they screwed up and either haven't told the employer, or they are not good at their job so can't talk the employer into waiting even a day to interview you. Blacklist you.... They should be blacklisted from being a recruiter... I think they should be named and shamed (the company)

This woman is just after the recruitment fee the "client" would give her. Tell her to "disappear" but with the initials F and O. Then go to another recruiter. I suspect the company would readily agree for a days delay because of this.

This is a sad story and I really am glad this guy managed to get his life together and get another very worthwhile job. My only gripe I have is that like all stories on here the event happened years ago and to me makes what this woman did null and void now. We don't know anything about her presently. She may be dead, or working for a really bad boss or anything like that. We only ever hear one side of the story which what makes this channel hypocritical to me. Ben is a great guy, but swears way too much. I wish he would tone it down like 95%.
