It's very hard to get, but I have loved the Harman Kardon citation bar and its WISA capability. In my main room I have expanded the bar with the towers sub and surrounds and the second bar in my bedroom I have expanded with the surrounds. The system's flexibility, looks, and sound are hard to beat. Hopefully, they will release an upgraded version with Atmos at some point; I am shocked that there are no real reviews on this

I am not anti soundbar by any means, but I don't have a ton of experience with them either as I am fortunate to be able to have full Paradigm systems in all my music areas. I have toyed around with some though, and for me the best soundbar has long been retired, the Martin Logan Vision. Not the replacement Vision X as it had a horrible defect where it often goes silent for a couple of seconds fairly often. Also certainly not the even newer ML Cadence as that just sounds so inferior. I heard one of Samsung's early "super Atmos" soundbars (probably around 2019 version) while I had an ML Vision in my living room and I felt the Vision was slightly better for movies, but far better for music. The gap gets even bigger with a sub added to the mix. I haven't heard the Ambeo, but my guess is that is likely the soundbar that would surpass the Vision on music, maybe....3 air motion tweeters and 4 4.5" woofers really perform so well in that Vision.

CORRECTION: in the video I state that the Polk MagniFi Mini AX has "upward firing" drivers. It does not have direct upward drivers but drivers all around that simulate height channels that when used along with Atmos content creates the sensation of more height compared to the JBL. The Polk has eARC as well as Atmos support --two things the JBL lacks. Apologies for any and all confusion this may have caused. All other remarks about the Polk and JBL in this video are correct.

I just want to say thank you for this recommendation. I have been looking for something to replace my 2.1 setup because my living room is not the ideal space for it. Now I have something perfectly suitable for movies and my 2.1 setup has been moved to another room which is more suitable for music listening(which is its main purpose). I only have limited time with the sound bar but so far I am not disappointed for $350 and I don't have any problem hearing dialogue in shows or movies anymore. Also, as an added bonus, my 2.1 setup sounds ridiculous in the new space.

Im so excited for the polk review. Im really pumped that you got to explore more soundbar reviews as not everyone has big living space or want big speakers in their homes. I have a polk Magnifi Max without the surrounds and honestly this soundbar makes me want to keep it forever. It sounds amazing for any content as long as you put it in the right mode as watching movies with in music mode makes everything sound muffled. Also one thing before all the soundbar users start testing their product i believe we should update firmware first to fix potential problems or have its sound signature updated. This product seems to have a successor the polk magnifi 2 with a simulated dolby atmos dsp which im hoping i could see for a review too. Also thank you for taking away my doubts about really having a seperate speaker system to really enjoy music or movies. I was still thinking are soundbars still not good enough in 2022? Can they be an endgame gear? Anyways thank you i gotta love your reviews and opinions and i understand people will always have preference but i find myself always agreeing with you guys.

Great review. I just read a review from someone on this that also raved about it. It's in strong consideration for me to replace a very aging 2013 Vizio 42" 5.1 set up I have. This review might be what pushes me to buy. Thanks, guys!

Well I have the Sonos arc + Sub + 2x One SL and I am blow away of how clear and dynamic it is. Unfortunately I can't compare it to anything else since I haven't heard the competition but I have heard other systems with separates and the full Sonos is easily up there. Atmos content (Netflix) is very good but the ultimate benchmark is to crank the volume up and play some Halo infinite on Xbox Series X, I don't know what the sound engineers have done to this game but you just have to hear it, this is on another level. Music wise sounds full, dynamic, vocals are good, highs are not harsh, bass is very tight and hits hard when it should and blends seamlessly with the speakers. Very enjoyable experience 😀

I simply gave up on sound bars period. I always hated the compromise I had to deal with to use them. This one though.....might just make me try one again for the first time in years. I'm currently using a 2.1 system, but it's separate's (Jamo S803's with a Monoprice sub and a simple Aiyima T9 tube amp) for my work station/fun station. It sounds great. But I always wanted to like the simplicity of a soundbar, nothing beats just hooking up a few wires and having at thee....I hope this does that for me! I bought this based on Andrews review to replace my 2.1 bedroom system for a cleaner setup. It came in today and I set it up. Calibrated it and I have to say I’m satisfied and won’t be returning the system. @$350 + tax, it’s a great buy! I was previously using a Yamaha WXA-50 powering a pair of Triangle BR02 with a cheap sub from monoprice. The amp was getting fed from a Samsung TV via optical since the TV has no arc/earc. For music, the 2.1 setup is the hands down winner but I mostly watch movies and tv shows on the system. The JBL has better dialog clarity and the movies sound bigger than the 2.1. It works well for low level too and having the ability to toggle 5 levels of bass is great at low volumes. All I can say is that I’m satisfied and don’t need to search for a better system knowing that a system even 10% better will cost twice the price. I also tested the new Vizio AIO with 6 speakers and having atmos, etc. That actually has big bass and sounded good without a sub. But it can’t compete with the huge sound of the JBL. It doesn’t get as loud and doesn’t rumble without a sub. There’s also a harshness in the treble that bothers me especially when listen to music. It might be what makes the dialog a bit more crisp than the JBLs but it’s too harsh and sounds artificial… even if I tone down the treble. Hope my experience helps others out looking for a sound bar around this price point or lower.

I just bought this a few days ago. My B&W Panorama 2 finally crapped out on me after all these years, and I'm still in the process of trying to find the next one to invest in...so meanwhile, I just needed something for now cause I was struggling to listen to just the tv speakers. After testing all the budget priced soundbars, I ended up coming home with this JBL 5.1. Like you, I was actually pleasantly surprised, specially with the bass. Unfortunately, I ended up exchanging mine cause there was one big feature that is missing in this soundbar that is usually present in most soundbars, even the more cheaper one, Nightmode. I am an insomniac, my wife goes to bed much earlier than I do, and I'm one of those people that has to have that feature. My biggest issue with this soundbar, is that when listening to low level, when you have a loud special effect sound, its like the volume was all of sudden cranked up to 20. When watching youtube, whenever an ad would come up, the volume levels are so inconsistent, that I was contatnly fumbling at the remote turning it up and down. I really couldnt enjoy watching at night. I ended up exhanging it for an LG soundbar that has the nightmode. I will admit, I almost regret it as the JBL did sound slightly better, and also having a better bass with the 10" subwoofer. But I end up prefering the LG better as I am not constantly fumbling for the remote. I suppose this may not be an issue with some people if they go to bed on normal hours. But for those that dont, just be aware that this JBL soundbar suffers from a huge discrepancy in sound level at lower volumes.

Thanks Andrew & Kristi for another informative and exciting review. I have been considering replacing an old system I have had for about 10 years that is bulky and has yards and yards of heavy wiring, not to mention no HDMI connection. After seeing the review and the significant discount I have taken another of your recommendations and purchased this JBL system. I only use it as a substitute for the TVs inadequate down firing speakers where we otherwise have a full a/v set up for movies. I used some rewards and they gave a $25 discount for 5 day shipping versus 2 day where the price was in the end ridiculous. Cheers until tomorrow!

I recently ran a test on my phone using Dolby Atmos content audio and a Netflix movie with Dolby Atmos 5.1 sound. I have JBL Live Pro 2 earbuds connected to my phone which provides awesome sound. Every sound produced with the video and movie, whether bass, mid, high, as well as overhead and surround sounds, I heard through this soundbar exactly as it was on my phone. And get this...I use a toslink connection from 55" LG 4K TV to soundbar as its my best option to connect with. Part of this could also be that my soundbar is postioned above my TV but I believe it's most due to the built-in multibeam, panoramic surround sound of the soundbar.

I'm a fan of audiophile stereo systems, headphones and all that stuff but I don't get the soundbar hate. For a lot of people the soundbar and sub gives them a straightforward way of getting an exciting theatre-like sound experience in their living room. It's a positive thing, especially as flat screen tvs tend not to ship with the best integrated audio. Currently rocking the new Harman Kardon Citation 1100 in our smaller living room /den and it's marvelous. The sub is turned down because similar to the JBL it can really push out some air and it's a bit too intense. The room calibration is simple and it gives a good facsimile of a 7.1.2 atmos setup. Dialogue intelligibility is top notch. Setup was a breeze. My wife likes the AVRs and separates that we have in our large room but they're fussier. Lots to remember when setting stuff up whereas this is plug & play. Even for a premium soundbar with sub & surrounds there's a lot less cost, time & effort than has gone into my other AV projects. She jokes if we get divorced she wants the soundbar and I can keep all the other stuff. Well I kinda hope she's joking 😉 The one negative for me, apart from possible divorce, is the longevity. Soundbars obsolete themselves much faster than separates.

Gotta tell a little story. I sold the Kef LS50 Wireless 2 + KC62 combo. I wanted to try something completely different and cheap from time to time and at the same time think about the next hifi-move in peace. I first bought a Polk Magnifi Mini AX soundbar. It sounded terrible with both movies and music. Also, Chromecast didn't work. I returned it and bought a Sonos Ray soundbar instead. It's nice looking, easy and works great. Unfortunately the sound quality is rubbish. It's only good in dialogue, but otherwise really artificial sounding. I returned that too. Then I decided to try JBL soundbar. I paid 350 euros for it. I was very skeptical, but it turned out to be absolutely brilliant. It is perfect for watching movies and TV and even listening to music is nice. Of course, it's not even close to my previous system, but for that money, its price-quality ratio is incredibly strong.

Hello Andrew and Kristi. You last video I watched you reviewed surround systems under 2500. I commented that I do not put much love in TV viewing I have a $150 Vizio sound bar and sub. Guess what the sub died. Great timing with this review I'm purchasing the JBL in this review. I think I just jinxed myself about my budget Vizio purchase LOL THANK YOU AGAIN for great content

OMG Andrew i remember asking you to review this like 2 years ago and ended buying it, I've loved it so far except for the fact that bass gets too overwhelming some times, remote has too little functionality available and the bass feels out of sync sometimes while listening to music, I got it for around 40000 rupees ($500), love the fact that it's now " Andrew Approved"

I love the system, and you can lower the sub. It has 5 levels. I love bass though, and keep it on my 5. Yea, I had a full onkyo 5:1 before this, and this is the best bang for the buck on the market. There is better, but not for 500 dollars. Which, this typically can be found for. This is a steal at 500, or less.

Saw your comment and immediately canceled my order for the JBL Bar 5.1 Surround. The JBL Bar 500 is already available where I live and not only that, it was heavily discounted on JBL's inhouse store, 400€ instead of 650€. I ordered it right away. That's just 50€ more compared the already discounted and 3 year old predecessor. Thanks for the headsup.

Have the older model JBL Bar 5.1 with the detachable surrounds. Watched the latest Prey movie. It was good. Going to listen to the AMBEO on Saturday (without my credit card) LOL! Looking at upgrading to ATMOS. But want to do it right. I do still separate movies (using a bar) from music (2 channel stereo) My speakers are delayed. But opted for Music Fidelity 5Si (based on your review) Sonus Faber Sonetto II. For vinyl I use a MoFi StudioDeck with Ultra cartridge and a Pro-Ject Tube Box DS2. Should try and review those

A question for both of you: I noticed that Kristi made it clear that you can definitely listen to music with this soundbar setup and be happy with it.... your recent 'top 5 Home Theaters under $2500' video got me thinking (not limiting to that price point, or just those setups of course), at what price point (generally speaking), would YOU be able to replace a home theater setup with one of these and be able to be happy with the sound? That comment from Kristi really got me thinking about if I REALLY need ALL that stuff to be happy with the sound of my system.
@andrewrobinsonreviews2 жыл бұрын
You can totally enjoy music with a soundbar, I know I can at least. I don't know if there is a "price point" with which to do so, but one thing I've noticed that DEFINITELY helps a bar to sound more like a pair of speakers, and that is side firing drivers. A soundbar will always have a strong center image --likely more so than stereo speakers --but side firing drivers can help the sound to open up beyond the physical limitations of the bar itself. Upward firing drivers AND side drivers can take things a bit further. I LOVED the B&W Panorama 3 (bit.ly/3MXStNQ ) for Atmos music and surround sound movies though admittedly it was a bit lackluster for straight stereo. Now at $999 that may be a little pricey. But for an all-in-one solution I think it may be worth it for some. But you can totally get away with something less expensive like the JBL here, or even the Polk MagniFi Mini AX (bit.ly/3zO8eSZ) just to see if you like it before jumping all-in.

This is definitely budget king for a 5.1 soundbar (My sister has it). If you wanted to make a leap your going more into the Q950a, Ambeo, and HT-A9 territory which will cost you much much more. I personally think anything in between isn't worth it. Just my opinion.
