Nah, Catcher in the Rye was legit controversial and is still banned in places around the country, but it was controversial for the 40’s and 50’s when it was published, because it encouraged teenagers to be rebellious and had a queer character as a kind of good guy. Not because of shock gags and offensive humor like South Park was controversial for in the 00’s.

It's ironic because there are tonnes of alienated teens in this day and age who could easily relate to the character in this book despite its age.

​​@@coreyjones9183yeah but I bet that had more do with the image of looking dark and edgy due to the whole Mark David Chapman thing, than them actually reading the book. The whole Emo phenomena was more a commodified identity/image sold to teens. Hence stores like hot topic. Most of those kids ditched that whole fad and grew up to be normal adults. When I was saying alienated teens I meant the actual struggling kids who feel completely alienated from their environment.

It's not really a surprise that Kyle would read the whole book. My understanding is that Kyle, Wendy and Token are all Straight A students. Stan is less inclined to read it though. He'd probably just use SparkNotes as a reference.

Makes sense. Both Kyle’s dad and Token’s dad are lawyers so they’d probably feel pressured to do well in school and Wendy is a pretty big activist so she probably is looking into getting to a good college.
