Bonjour de Montreal! I feed the squirrels in Angrignon park. ☺ I used to feed 13 squirrels at a time but they've all disappeared for some reason. My favorite was the one black one who would run up to me when he saw me from a distance. I miss them... 😭 These days I only see 2 or 3 younger ones if I go looking for them.

I'm starting to be able to tell my squirrels apart. My favorite George hung out with me yesterday...sat in the tree above me for like an hour it seemed. He likes to forage so I see him up in the walnut tree above..also he is small and has a skinny tail. My other squirrel is a girl and I can identify her by her behavior and she has a white hair on her forehead.

I think what hooks you is that it’s not just us getting attached to them, but they start getting attached to us too. I'm hoping you can help me with a troubling problem: I've been feeding squirrels in my yard for several years, and I used to frequently see them eating the peanuts and otherwise running around the yard most of the day; but in the last few weeks I've only seen one squirrel (no others in either my yard nor neighboring yards for weeks), and the peanuts are often left largely uneaten (I see birds eating some of them, but no squirrels). I have two theories: 1) I had been gradually increasing the amount of peanuts, so maybe they just have so many stored up that they no longer bother to get more food; but i suspect squirrels are genetically programmed to keep searching for food anyway; 2) up until a couple weeks ago I had a long illness, possibly the mild form of COVID-19, and I sometimes accidentally coughed or breathed on the peanuts while putting them out, so I'm worried I may have spread the disease to the squirrels. One recent study found that two species of squirrels are immune to contracting the virus and the other animal species studied were immune from the effects even if they carried the virus, but the study didn't test the type of squirrels I have in my area.

Squirrels have much better immunity compared to us, so I don't think they got your virus. Sometimes squirrels take breaks, so I hope they'll come back soon.

Hi "Squirrel". I have squirrel problem I want your advice about. I feed squirrels on my apartment balcony. They are not tame, I don't hand feed them so they are quite afraid of me or at least suspicious. I have an old squirrel that is less afraid and now it (He or She, I can't tell the difference on these red squirrels I have) has gone in to my apartment. It can´t chew (Gnaw I mean) properly so when I gave it hazelnuts that they love here in Sweden it can not open it! I ended up cracking nuts for a squirrel! Problem is it started to run around my apartment to explore it and I could chase it out with some difficulty, but I don't think that is a good habit (it wasn't really scared of me, more like I was a nuisance). I often have my door to the balcony open because it is hot or I just want the ventilation and fresh air. How do I stop this squirrel? But in the same time keep it alive? I think it has more and more difficulty finding food in the "wild" (Stockholm park area), because of age/teeth problem. No other squirrels go inside, they are to afraid of that.

I don't have a problem with squirrels coming inside and looking around, actually I love when they do that. But if you really don't want it inside but you want to continue to feed them, you'll have to keep the door closed. Or make sure they always have food on the balcony, maybe use a squirrel feeder.

Quite a number of people have been adopted by squirrels. As long as it does not create a mess you can chose to be happy the squirrel has adopted you and that you can give it care it would not have living only in the park. There is a chipmunk channel from Canada you might like called ChooChoo's Story, and she feeds one old chipmunk inside because it was not getting enough food in the wild. Your story sounds similar.

A house up the street from me had one of their old tall trees taken down (to be fair, Mother Nature darn near did it a few days ago). There were squirrels in another tree watching & all I could do was laugh bc they seemed so upset (tails twitching a mile a minute).
