This stone building discovered in Greece is at least 4,000 years old

Archaeologists and historians have been left puzzled by the discovery of a ring-shaped stone monument believed to have been built in the Bronze Age. This unique Minoan monument, estimated to be around 4,000 years old, was unearthed on the hilltop of Papoura Hill on the Greek island of Crete. The 1,800-square-meter building was discovered during excavations for a large airport project. At the summit of Papoura Hill, this remarkable structure features eight concentric rings of stone, each with an average thickness of 1.4 meters. Despite the ravages of time, some sections of these rings still stand at impressive heights of up to 1.7 meters.
Minoan sites are renowned for their exquisite art and religious architecture, including terracotta figurines and "votive limbs" offered in prayer or gratitude. However, the circular structure on Papoura Hill stands apart from typical Minoan constructions. This first-of-its-kind discovery on Crete has researchers speculating about its purpose and significance. Similarities have been noted between this complex and early Bronze Age architectural styles in the Middle East, as well as tombs from the Pre-Palatial and Paleo-Palatial eras of southern Crete. The abundance of animal bones found within suggests it may have been used for ritual ceremonies involving food, wine, and offerings.
